Day 1
October 11th 2008 06:51
Start time: 0.630
Temp: 24
Wind: Easy
Distance: 144km
We stayed in Lock, and had a fantastic steak dinner, the night before our first stage. Lock is small and completely hospitable - I sneaked a hug with Carol who put us up for the night in her pub.
The start could have been better - or rather smarter. Rookie mistake 1 - started off too hard, knocking off the first 20k in no time. Rookie mistake 2 - not checking local conditions. It was close to freezing, and after 30k could feel nothing, begging the sun to rise. Finally common sense prevailed and I put on a jacket.
The scenery was just wonderful. We even went into a big fog, thick as pea soup and other varieties for that matter. The fields, the sun rise, the everything that looks beautiful was on display, even the road kill had a certain appeal.
The biggest catastrophe was no coffee on the way! I had Josh’s energy gels to help, and they certainly did, I’m suspicious about exactly what is in them, because they did perk pretty quick.
We steamed into Pt Lincoln to welcoming party on the foreshore, just the most brilliant spot to finish.
The left knee is a bit inflamed, and the right calf got a twinge, which has been with me for a while.
Right now – finishing the day with Felicity & Ian Jones, who are providing us with every conmfort – about to have a very nice smelling pasta dish.
