David Chapelle's Block Party
September 8th 2006 01:24
Finally my husband and I got around to renting David Chapelle's Block party from the most confusing Blockbuster store in Sydney! Our expectations were high, c'mon did you see the line up - Jill Scott, Erykah, Common, Mos Def and on and on... My only reservations was - is this going to have a story line or is this just going to be a recorded concert.
It was the latter. It basically was just a whole movie of concerts, jokes and backstage footage. It was a good concert no doubt, this generations hip hop oriented woodstock, but I felt a bit lonely and unsatisfied at the end. It was like a one night stand with a sexy sexy man, rather than a meaning relatioship with a sexy sexy man.
The highlight for me was Jill Scott - the afrocentric ghetto queen wo sings like the sky is falling in and then beams a smile that makes you feel like everything will be ok in the end. And boy, what a duo when Erykah joined her on stage. It made me clap and whistle form the comfort of my couch - can't imagine what it would have been like if I had really been there.
David, who pulled the not for profit project together is likeable, but honestly he's just not that funny. I want to laugh with him, I really do, but the most I do is smile the way I do when my 6 year old son tries out his own knock knock jokes on me. "knock knock... whose there?... Jamal.... jamal who? Jamal Robertson...." But that's your name honey.... sigh....
Anyway, it was good for a bit of light relief.
