Daughters and Their Weddings
May 11th 2008 00:41
Its all over the radio about the presidents daughter getting married. Makes me think back to when my daughter tied the knot. What a day!
Living in NV, we just took the kids to the courthouse in Reno to buy the license and then to one of the chappels for the wedding ceremony. We had a camcorder and the wife was supposed to film the wedding. She pressed the button, the red light came on, and everything looked like it was working just fine. Later, when we tried to replay it, the whole tape was blank except for :"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here." That's when the damn thing stopped. So the kids used the tape to record their honeymoon, instead. The wife and I never got to see it, and we really didnt want to, either!
It was a small wedding, small reception and the kids both wore black. The groom forgot to buy a ring and was late to the wedding because he had to run out and get one. Scared my daughter half to death! The ring he picked was supposed to have a diamond in it, but we found out later that it was a rare, perfect white sapphire. The band broke a week later and cost a bundle to replace.
Weddings mean a lot in my family. Commitment is important to us. The wife and I eloped so we never had to deal with all the details. But I think maybe she misses having the memory of a big wedding. I keep telling her that weddings are good but marriages are the most important part. Anyone can say I do, but making it last, that's an achievemnet.
My daughter and son in law are still happily married after 15 years. I hope the presidents daughter does as well.
