A Somber Anniversary

September 11th 2007 05:56
Like practically everyone else on the planet, I remember exactly what I was doing almost six years ago today when it happened. September 11, 2001 dawned typically bright and sunny in South Florida, as I awoke at my usual 6:30 a.m. hour. Though my position as a recruiter for a large national bank didn’t require my presence at the office until 8:30 a.m., I always left early, so I could enjoy the scenic route (instead of the perpetually snarled Interstate 95) from my home in Boynton Beach to my office in downtown Boca Raton. As I drove down A1A along the coast – quite possibly the most beautiful road in America – I drank in the magnificence of a rising orange sun over crystal blue water, the lushness of verdant foliage and vivid tropical flowers, and the graceful sway of ubiquitous palm trees.

Normally I listened to motivational CD’s during my 45-minute trek, but for some reason on this particular morning, I chose to leave on 97.9, WRMF, a local pop music station. At the time, they had a good morning show team consisting of two guys and a girl with a spontaneous chemistry reminiscent of Fox and Friends, when E.D. Hill was still a part of the line-up (with all due respect to Gretchen Carlson, the show just isn’t the same since E.D. left).

Anyway, the usual merriment was disrupted by breaking news about an airplane hitting one of the World Trade Center towers. With very little known at that point, the morning team speculated that it could have been a private plane that had either veered off course or run into engine problems. Since the weather in New York was also clear, the latter seemed a more likely scenario. As I slammed my door shut and entered the bank building, I remember hoping that no one inside the impacted tower or on the plane had been seriously injured or killed. It sure seemed odd, though, that the pilot would not have done everything in his power to avoid the skyscraper, even if there was no chance of preventing a crash.

Since my recruiting assistant had taken the morning off, I was left alone to administer Teller assessments to the group of 11 or so hopefuls who were already waiting for me outside of the lobby. Once set up in our conference center, I headed into my office to call hiring managers, check online applications and basically get started on what I thought would be another routine day at the office.

Then suddenly, Leah, an administrative assistant who frequently popped downstairs to say hello, hysterically rushed into the HR office with the breathless announcement that another plane had struck the second tower. My heart lurched in my chest as the realization sunk in that this was no accident, but some sort of coordinated and sinister plan of attack, though neither of us could fathom the absolute evil with which we would soon become all too familiar. Osama bin Laden, Al-Qaeda, militant Islam and terrorism were about to invade the vernacular and usher in a new age of the ideological war where there were no borders, no uniformed soldiers representing a country and no rules of engagement. Rather than attack Military installations, this cowardly enemy had chosen to unleash its wrath upon innocent, unsuspecting civilians as they rode on airplanes or toiled at their desks.

Without a television, I relied upon information gleaned from various employees, who upon hearing about the subsequent assault on the Pentagon, the collapse of the World Trade Center and the horrific crash of United Flight 93, would run around the building, announcing the latest chilling milestone in this never-ending nightmare. And when we heard that the government had grounded all flights, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that we were at war. But with who?

Six years later, the war with Muslim extremists rages on. And to this day, whenever I watch the video of American jetliners slamming into the Twin Towers, it’s as if I am seeing it for the very first time. The shock, anger and sorrow are as acute now as they were on the morning that changed everything. It still takes my breath away -- the grotesque sound of impact, the surrealism of each tower’s horrific implosion, the haunting desperation of human beings choosing to jump 80 stories to their deaths rather than perish in a raging inferno of jet-fuel, and yes -- the repugnant sight of Palestinians celebrating and dancing in the streets in reaction to the Great Satan’s “comeuppance.”

Then as now, whenever I try to fathom the scope of the unadulterated evil that consumes the heart, mind and soul of a radical Islamic terrorist, it sends shivers up and down my spine. While intellectually I understand the source of their motivation – the teachings of the Koran that command them to rid the world of “infidels” and impose a global Muslim caliphate – the sheer brutality of these killers and the cold, calculated focus with which they plan one diabolical scheme after another never fail to astonish me. If Christians and others question the real Satan’s existence, Islamo-fascists seem to make a pretty clear-cut case for it.

In the aftermath of 9/11, patriotism made a short-lived, but welcome return. America and the free world united against a common enemy, while politicians set aside their differences and came to the realization that, Republican or Democrat, we were all targets of a relentless ideology of hatred – a force that had to be reckoned with, for the sake of mankind and the survival of western civilization. Well, that was then, this is now.

Today I watched as General Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker reported on the success of the Military surge in Iraq. I witnessed the utter contempt with which some members of Congress addressed these heroic men who are working tirelessly for the freedom of Iraqis and the security of the United States (including my own Congressman Robert Wexler, an absolute disgrace to his office). Having long ago sacrificed their own country on the altar of political expediency, Democrats collectively held their ears and metaphorically chanted “I can’t hear you!” All that was missing were the lollipops.

Six years after the worst attack on American soil, one political party is actively courting defeat and willing their country to lose. The “kooky anti-war left fringe” has now become the aggressive, money-wielding base of the Democratic Party and they’ve made their objectives quite clear: Democratic representatives will march in lock-step or their days on Capitol Hill are numbered. And lest any of them forget, their overlords at MoveOn.org took out a full-page ad in The New York Times accusing Five-Star General David Petraeus – a man unanimously approved by the Senate to manage the surge – of betrayal before the man had even uttered one word of testimony. Tellingly, not one Democrat, with the exception of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, issued a statement condemning the ad. Useful idiots.

As we celebrate the heroes of September 11, let us also remember that freedom is worth fighting for. That despite Hollywood’s best efforts to smear them, American forces believe in their mission and continue to serve their country honorably, alongside their Allied counterparts. Let us not fail to remember that global jihad never rests, and certainly makes no distinction between liberal and conservative, Democrat and Republican. We are all infidels. And if we wish to preserve western civilization for ourselves and for future generations, then this evil must be confronted and destroyed. We owe at least that much to all of the men and women whose memory we honor today.

Denmark Arrests 8 Terror Suspects

September 4th 2007 18:45
From AP:

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Denmark's intelligence service early Tuesday arrested eight Islamic militants linked to leading al-Qaida figures, and said the suspects were plotting an attack involving explosives.

"With the arrests we have prevented a terror attack," said Jakob Scharf, head of the PET intelligence service.

He did not identify the target.

The suspects — six Danish citizens and two foreigners with residence permits — had been under surveillance for some time and were arrested after police gathered enough evidence against them, he said.

"They also have been producing an unstable explosive in a densely populated area," Scharf said.

He said Danish investigators had worked with "several foreign cooperation partners" in the probe before they rounded up the suspects, ages 19 to 29.

"Those arrested are militant Islamists with connections to leading al-Qaida persons," Scharf said without naming those people. "According to our assessment, there is a direct connection to al-Qaida."

But hey, George Bush and America are the biggest threats to the world!

Thank You, Prime Minister Howard

September 4th 2007 14:54
Demonstrating that moonbattery is an international affliction, anti-President Bush protesters took to the streets in Sydney to "welcome" the leader of the free world. And they even have a token member of the United States Military on their side. I guess when the vast majority of American soldiers support the war, finding one who doesn't is an easy task:

About 200 anti-war activists gathered in central Sydney to voice their opposition to President Bush's policy in Iraq.

Thousands more protesters are expected to take part in a large rally in Australia's biggest city on Saturday when APEC leaders meet.

Among those taking to the streets will be a former U.S. marine and veteran of the Iraq war.

Matt Howard, who served two tours of duty in the Persian Gulf, has come to Sydney to deliver an anti-war message to President Bush and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

"Four-and-a-half years later after our opening shock and awe Bush's lies are known throughout the world and yet he continues to act with impunity," said Howard. "Four-and-a-half years later the Bush regime along with his sycophant coalition have unleashed a hell upon the country of Iraq that only those that have been there can truly understand."

About the only thing Matt has in common with the Australian Prime Minister is a last name. I guess he missed this news from yesterday.

Prime Minister Howard has proven himself to be the Winston Churchill of our time with his stalwart support of the War on Terror. His willingness to do the right thing in spite of sometimes violent opposition is a trait he shares with Britain's famous Prime Minister and President Bush. Howard, though, gifted with much more eloquent communication skills than the US President and possibly devoid of any need for the admiration of his political opponents, is not afraid to speak out forcefully:

Mr Howard said that threats of violent protests, not the presence of foreign leaders and high ranking officials, were to blame for severe security restrictions now being imposed on Australia's largest city.

The Prime Minister spoke soon after he inspected security arrangements around the Opera House, which is to be the summit's main venue.

AAP reports: "The reason why we have this security clampdown in Sydney, the reason why people have been inconvenienced is because people in the past have practised and, in the current environment, are threatening violence,'' Mr Howard told reporters. "It's not the fault of the guests in our country.

"It's not the fault of the American president, or the Chinese president or the Russian president, it's not the fault of the NSW government or the federal government. It's the fault of people who threaten violence.

"That's why you have to have heavy security. It's got nothing to do with the luggage or the behaviour of the people who are coming here as our guests.''

It's the fault of the people who threaten violence.

Oh, the irony! If only the Sydney protesters, like their American and European counterparts, would just grow up and get a life (and maybe a job), instead of imitating (on a much smaller scale of course) the actions of the radical Islamists. You know, the folks who not only continuously "threaten violence" against the free world, but often make good on their promises. Hence, the need for American and Allied soldiers to fight them in Iraq, Afghanistan and every other front. Years before the US-led invasion of Iraq, the entire world was in agreement, based on the Intelligence, that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. Democrats including Dianne Feinstein and John Kerry said so back in 1998, but chose to play ball with the useless UN in a never-ending game of weapons inspections and ad nauseam resolutions that only emboldened and entertained Iraq's brutal dictator. Oh, and let's not forget countries like France and Russia, who were happily on the receiving end of Saddam's largesse with the Oil for Food Program.

And then September 11 happened, and the entire world changed. Brave leaders like Bush, Blair and Howard realized that the west was now engaged in a battle for its very existence. And many citizens woke up from their slumber and understood that freedom isn't free, but worth fighting (and sometimes dying) for. Alas, too many others went back to sleep, or blamed American foreign policy and western "imperialism" for the carnage, instead of radical Islam.

But I suspect, as with American "peace" activists, the Sydney clamor is more about imposing a new world order of socialism and/or communism than anything else. More useful idiots for the enemy.

Thanks to intrepid leaders like PM Howard and President Bush, western civilization is still on offense. May the trend continue as long as there are jihadists willing to kill themselves and others in the name of Allah.

Giving us the most compelling reason to date to diss a Dallas sports team, billionaire Mavericks owner and producer Mark Cuban has teamed with America-hating director Brian De Palma on a new troop-sliming film called Redacted. In the latest installment of Hollywood Hates America, those who've possibly benefited the most from this great country in terms of wealth and fame, thank the ones who make their freedom possible by creating a movie that focuses on the heinous crimes of a tiny minority, instead of the valiant heroism of the vast majority. If Cuban and De Palma really wanted to bring "truth" to the screen, why didn't they depict on film the genital mutilation, honor killings, stonings and rapes that Middle Eastern women routinely suffer at the hands of radical male Muslims? Why not create a little "context" by featuring Saddam's rape rooms? Or the brutality of the Taliban? Irony -- not to mention patriotism -- is lost on these people.

As Debbie Schlussel noted, this is not De Palma's first foray into military-bashing. In 1989, he directed Casualties of War, a movie about five American soldiers fighting in Vietnam, four of whom kidnap and rape an innocent Vietnamese girl. Schlussel also pointed out that the film starred Sean Penn, another recipient of American prosperity who has made quite a name for himself among the world's most despicable human rights violators, from Saddam Hussein to Hugo Chavez. Perhaps in preparation for his "Jeff Spicoli" role in the 1981 film, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Penn smoked a little too much pot, resulting in irreparable damage to his brain. Or perhaps, in lock-step with his fellow ivory-tower dwellers in Hollyweird, he's completely out of touch with reality

Can We Just Get Beyond Katrina?

September 1st 2007 18:04
Kudos to Cassy Fiano of Wizbang and John Hawkins of Townhall, for eloquently stating what many of us, especially those living in other hurricane-prone states have felt all along. It is time for the citizens of New Orleans to stop whining and start taking responsibility. That includes some serious self-examination as to the real reasons why they re-elected a woefully incompetent mayor, in spite of his gross negligence in the wake of their city's worst natural disaster.

Fiano, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, recalls the active 2004 season, during which the state was hit by four major hurricanes

Senator Craig Plays Footsie

August 29th 2007 17:34
In yet another instance of a public figure refusing to take responsibility for his repulsive actions, Senator Larry Craig, Republican from Idaho, held a defiant press conference yesterday. Rather than apologizing for coming on to an undercover police officer in a public restroom at a Minneapolis Airport and announcing his resignation, Craig excoriated the local newspaper, The Idaho Statesman, and vehemently denied being gay. I guess the fact that he'd pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges in Hennepin County on August 8 must have slipped his mind. And since the behavior in question had nothing to do with punishing people for being gay and everything to do with numerous complaints that the men's room had turned into a brothel, Craig would have done well to leave his sexuality out of it. (By the way, since when did public restrooms become such a turn-on? Bleech!).

Democrats and the mainstream media are of course, having a field day broadcasting the fact that this a Republican senator -- you know, the party of "family values," while virtually ignoring the well-documented illegal behavior of members of the Democratic party including Bill Clinton, William Jefferson, Barney Frank, Cynthia McKinney and Jack Murtha, to name a few

What part of right versus wrong don't people understand? Why is it that when a black celebrity, athlete or public figure is so obviously guilty of a deplorable crime, the race-baiters and apologists come out of the woodwork to place everything in the proper "context," even in the face of irrefutable evidence?

In case you've been living on another planet for the last several weeks, Atlanta Falcons' star Quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting charge on August 27. So let's talk about "context," shall we

About a year ago, I blogged about an excellent (aren't they always) column penned by journalist and legal immigrant to the USA, Mark Steyn, in response to kooky conspiracy theories and Popular Mechanics' detailed rebuttal entitled, Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can't Stand Up to the Facts.

As breathtaking as it may be nearly six years after the worst attack on American soil, a stunning 36% of the population actually believes that the government of the United States is responsible for the horrific deaths of 3,000 of its citizens on that agonizing day. NOT Osama bin Laden. NOT Al Qaeda. NOT the scourge of global jihad. It was that stupid cowboy George W. Bush and his evil sidekick, Dick Cheney! They're the ones who caused the towers to collapse with a cleverly contrived "controlled demolition" and led us to believe that American passenger planes had crashed into the WTC, the Pentagon and a field in Western Pennsylvania (if in fact, Flight 93 actually existed), when truly, the real culprits were deliberately guided American missiles, fired off on BushCheney's command

Howard,

Once again, you ignore the facts. These Imams were deliberately behaving in a threatening way, imitating the 9/11 hijackers. And as I've noted, an Arabic-speaking Middle Eastern passenger also expressed alarm. It has nothing to do with race, although the FACT remains that radical Islam is the driving motivation for terror. It is not Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist men flying planes into buildings, blowing themselves up, hatching plots to destroy subways, airliners, etc. and generally causing death and destruction.

Funny you should mention Hitler. Thanks to appeasers like Neville Chamberlain (to whose philosophy you appear to subscribe), Hilter was able to inflict his reign of terror for much longer period of time. Appeasement doesn't work and political correctness is going to get us all killed.

Thank you for the comments! As a new blogger, it is nice to get some feedback.

Jeanne, I will definitely look into your suggestions. I am away right now for the weekend, so my computer access is limited. Also, I want to check out everyone else's blogs. This is a great site!

And Howard, let me briefly respond to your comments: The 1979 Embassy takeover and hostage crisis in Iran occurred under President Jimmy Carter. The 1993 WTC bombing and the bombing of the USS Cole (just to name two), happened while Clinton was in office. The point is that Muslim extremists are driven by ideology that commands them to kill "infidels" and impose a worldwide Muslim caliphate for Allah. They despise western freedoms and values. It doesn't matter who is the VP or President of the USA. These people wake up everyday with one thought in mind: Killing as many infidels as possible. Read Brigitte Gabriel's book "Because They Hate." Very enlightening!

Also, if you think the good folks on Flight 300 were "paranoid" you should read the many accounts of happened. The imams were deliberately acting out the 9/11 hijackers actions, and in my opinion, it was purposely done as an intimidation tactic. Knowing western sensitivity, they knew this would erupt into a "discrimination" fight. I suppose the clerk at Circuit City was also "paranoid" after he watched the videotape of the terrorists chanting death to America while wielding weapons.

Maybe you should listen to Osama and AQ, if you don't believe me. They are pretty clear on their objectives. I believe them, especially after 9/11.
