World Series Champs Phinally

October 30th 2008 14:19
Baseball season is Phinally over and the Phillies are the winners - the champs - the "team to beat", after 28 years of never coming close or coming up short. THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ARE THE 2008 CHAMPIONS IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL!!!When I look back at the season through all the highs and lows that this team endured, I had a feeling about them.

There was something special about this group of guys and every single one of them contributed. Sure, they had me seating at the edge of my seat many times. They were even nerve-racking to watch other times. But when August came and I hadn't been to a single game after following them all season, I knew it was time to get there - to Citizen's Bank Park. These guys had a chance and I could sense it. My family went to that game and the Phillies beat the Dodgers. In September, exactly one month later, my husband and I went to a game and saw them beat the Braves.

It was the nail-biting, tail end of the regular season that gripped people the most until the post season began. Once they were in, they were in for the fight. It wasn't going to be like last year they said. And seeing is believing and the "you gotta believe" slogan replayed in our minds and hearts. It wasn't anything like last year when the Phils were swept away in the first series. This year was far different. This year, the fightin' Phillies took game after game in the post season winning, and moving on to the next. As fans, we saw a chance for our team in red; we saw something that wasn't there for a long, long time. This team surpassed expectations way beyond our wildest dreams and they got the ultimate victory. One that hasn't been seen in the area for a quarter of a century.

Yet somehow I knew that it could be done by this team; the team of 2008, and I'm sure many others out there knew too. If you followed them all season from start to finish, the magic was there. They had that special thing that all world champion teams have. The chemistry, the flow, the fluency of playing the game and getting the job done, the style of it all coming together at the right times. It was all there. Every player on the team had a hand in it and getting them to where they are now.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies!! You are truly number one!

The little butterfly was right, the Phillies did go a long, long way.

WS Game 1: Winning with Cole

October 23rd 2008 13:32
For fans of the team in red, the first win was big. It's exactly what is needed when in a series of this magnitude and doing it on the opposing teams home turf makes it better. As usual, Cole Hamels pitched magnificant. And what seems typical of the Phillies offense with him pitching, they blew opportunity after opportunity.

Of course it's a great time for Philly to get that win. You take the big W any way you can get them. Nevertheless, we hate to see our team strand potential runs at the plate, and the Phillies can really get into a grove of doing just that. For those that have been following the Phillies all season, this kind of thing has been done before - many times. Hamels should have a lot more wins under his belt from the regular season; the offense just doesn't pull through enough for him. Thank goodness for his superb pitching ability to limit runs and get out of jams.

The bullpen wasn't too shabby either. Madson came out in the eighth and did an amazing job getting the three outs. Then Brad Lidge did his part with 1-2-3 outs, and it was game over. The Phillies win 3-2 over the Rays.

Cole held the Rays at two after giving up a homerun, and a run that was scored in the 4th and 5th innings. This was key in the Phillies getting the win.

Pedro Feliz and Victorino had some big hits, as did Chase Utley when he started things of for the Phillies in the 1st inning, hitting a two-run long ball. Carlos Ruiz had an RBI bringing in the 3rd run for the Phillies.

Fans can only hope to see better offense from Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard in the future World Series games.

GO PHILLIES!!!!!

Fightin Phils Take Five

October 17th 2008 13:36
The Phillies did it! It took them five games to win the NLCS against the Dodgers and it took Philly fans 15 years to see it happen. And now that it has happened, we must wait patiently for the World Series to begin on October 22, 2008. Who exactly the Red hats will play has yet to be determined.

Cole Hamels was so smooth on the mound, he pitched a near shut-out. It was Manny Ramirez that hit a homerun against him, but not to worry. The Phillies were 5 up at that point. The teams confidence echoed in the Dodgers stadium and I could smell the victory from 3 thousand miles away. Then that final out came with Brad "Lights out" Lidge closing things down. Carlos Ruiz made the catch, an easy pop up in foul ball land. The celebration soon followed and in Philadelphia the party took to the streets well after midnight. Even the mayor of Philadelphia was celebrating right amongst the people of Philly. Great times!!

I was wrong about my prediction though. I felt things would come back to Citizens Bank Park for game 6 where the Phils would get the win. I'm happy that they got it done though and it just gave them extra rest time. It also gives the skipper and Shane Victorino more time they need to cope for the recent loses of family members. My condolences go out to both of them.

So now it's up to the Rays or the Red Sox to win the ALCS, and play the Phillies in the World Series. After the amazing comeback last night for the Red Sox, I'm not sure who will win. I have a strong feeling it will be the Rays though. They will be playing in front of a home crowd for the next game, and game seven if needed, but Rays just need one more.

GO PHILLIES!!! Congratulations National League Champions.

Game 2 of the NLCS

October 11th 2008 20:37
Dear readers,

If you read my last post, an error was made when I reported that the Phillies won the first game of the NLDS against the Dodgers. I made the correction to NLCS as it should be stated

Phillies Power

October 10th 2008 13:52
Once upon a time, when I discussed Phillies baseball with people in previous years, I used to make a statement, "You can't rely on homeruns to win games." Some people agreed with me. But after last nights game I'm thinking, what the heck was I talking about? Did I even know what I was saying? Maybe that remark was true for those particular seasons, but it certainly hasn't been true for the Phillies this year. I would say that the team in red has won a lot of games and got to where they are now because of super power hitting homeruns. I'm not complaining now, and neither is Philadelphia.

Last night held the first game of the NLCS, Phillies vs. Dodgers. The Dodgers quickly took a 2-0 lead, but didn't shake up the Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels. He was superb and only got better later in the game. The Phillies didn't seem to be getting anywhere with Lowe pitching for the Dodgers. Then things started to roll and Hamels even came up with a hit himself. But the Phillies didn't score yet. It was Shane Victorino taking advantage of an overthrown ball to first and ending up at second base on the error. Next, it was Chase Utley stepping up to the plate. Wham!!! He hits a two-run homerun making it a 2-2 game. Thank you Chase! Howard comes up to the plate and he can't get anything going. Pat 'the bat' Burrell, formerly boo.ooo..oo.d by fans in previous years, steps up to the plate. WHACK!!! This ball is long gone! A single run homer puts the Phillies in the lead 3-2, and they hold on to it to win the game. Thank you Pat. Thank you, and your bat

4 Games Later

October 9th 2008 02:40
There's less than a day to the National League Championship, best of 7, between the fightin' Phils and the LA Dodgers. And oh boy, is this going to be good. The first two games will be played on Philly's home turf - Citizen's Bank Park.

I think the Phils stand a great chance against the Dodgers. They must make the best out of every opportunity that comes their way. Stay away from loading up the bases with no outs in the ninth, then hit a double play ball, as was the case in game 3 against the Brewers. If the Phils keep the bats swinging and keep driving in the runs, they will out score the dodgers and ultimately win games against them

Nick Nolte's fire

October 8th 2008 15:20
I heard on a morning talk show today that actor Nick Nolte had a fire in his home yesterday. There are various reports of the amount of dollar damage, but the lowest I saw was 1.5 million at his ??? million dollar home; it's obvious were talking multi here.

Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt. I'm sure that it was quite frightening and even traumatic as it is for anyone that is victim to such an event. It was less than two weeks ago when I experienced being a witness to my next door neighbor's house being rescued by firefighters as black smoke billowed out of several windows

National League East Champs

October 1st 2008 15:01
The Phillies got the job done winning 4-3 over the Nationals, giving them back-to-back NL East title Championships. Once again, the fightin' Phillies make a come back from behind victory, to overcome their rival - Mets. And I think it was rightfully so. Afterall, The Phils were in first place mid-season. I remember it being the Mets down about 5 games or more. Then Interleague play happened and the Phils messed up getting them in the hole in the first place. Hey, as all Philly fans know by now, "it wouldn't be the Philly way if it were easy." I believe It was Jimmy Rollins who made a statement close to those words.

The game was sweet yet nerve-racking. Things were getting scary in the top of the ninth inning. The bases were loaded with one out. Phillies amazing closer, Brad Lidge was on the mound. He hadn't blown a save yet at this point. He's sweatin'......large sweat drops! Every fan must have had the world's largest Monarch batting around madly in their stomachs. The ball is hit hard and it looks like...oh....damn...it's going down the middle...oh, but wait.....yeahhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Jimmy Rollins stops it on a remarkable dive catch, tosses it perfectly to Utley who throws it to Howard at first, and the double play is made, the game is over, and the Philllies win. Whew! Extreme tension is lifted. Then the celebration. I had the wish-I-was-there feeling when I watched the party unfold on my tv screen. The game I went to most recently was last Mondays game when the Phillies beat the Braves in the first game of the series. That was good, but shoot, I picked the wrong game, because this would have been great

I agree that it is crazy. I watched that game and thought it to be absolute nonsense. Pitchers are allowed to do all kinds of movements in an attempt to distract the batter, but a permanent marking on his body is going to cause a problem. Yeah right! What if he had a scar in that same location or a birthmark?
