HE SEES DEAD PEOPLE - AND THEY ANNOY HIM

February 20th 2009 02:46

OK. I’m just letting you know from the start – I am a HUGE Ricky Gervais fan. He is just an absolute comical genius. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Gervais is the brains and wit behind T.V gems ‘The Office’ and ‘The Extras’. Now he has taken a leap onto the big screen and - as expected - has not disappointed.

GHOST TOWN is the story of Bertram Pincus, an anti-social dentist who openly admits that he “doesn’t mind crowds, just hates the people in them”. He can’t even stand to talk to his patients, so he stuffs their mouths full of gauze when it’s not needed, just to avoid conversation.

When Bertram comes out after a routine colonoscopy, he realises that he has developed the annoying ability to see and speak to the dead. After being chased and hounded by ghosts wanting his help, including the cocky Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), he heads back to the hospital to ask his surgeon what happened.

“Did anything unusual happen during my operation?”
“You... uh... died for seven minutes”.
“I died! For seven minutes!”
“We brought you right back. People die all the time”.
“Yeah, but it's usually just once... at the end!!!!”

After leaving the hospital, Bertram is revisited by ghost Frank Herlihy. After much avoiding, Bertram finally listens to Frank and learns that his widow Gwen (Tea Leoni) who lives in Bertrams’ building, is going to re-marry an absolute jerk and he wants Bertram to break them up.

This of course doesn’t sit well with Bertram – not because he doesn’t want Gwen to get hurt, he couldn’t care less. It means that he has to interact with other people which he absolutely loathes. But he realises that if he doesn’t help Frank, he will not be able to cross over and he will continue to annoy him.

When Bertram finally gets to meet with Gwen and her fiancé, he can’t find anything wrong with him. He’s a humanitarian lawyer who loves Gwen. But Bertram quickly sees that it’s not hard to love Gwen, and he begins to develop feelings for her.

After a lot of work, he finally succeeds in breaking them up, but this doesn’t allow Frank to cross over. It is here that we learn exactly what is holding him back, and Bertram begins to look at the other ghosts – and the world - in a whole new light.

This is just a FANTASTIC movie. I know it sounds a bit deep and meaningful, but there are so many brilliant one liners that it’s actually a comedy more than anything else. The ghost story line has been done to death over the last decade or so, but this story is just terrific. There is a marvelous support cast, and all the little roles hold great importance and hilarious dialogue. And as great as Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni are in the movie, Ricky Gervais is the shining light. He is just brilliant. He is known around the world as one of the leading comedians, and this movie has only boosted his status.

I don’t want to divulge too much and spoil this for you, because GHOST TOWN is definitely a must see movie.

It’s 9 out of 10 from me.

Every now and then Hollywood produces fantastic comedy duos that just click. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Cheech and Chong. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. Well, I’m adding another to the list – Will Ferrell and John C Reilly. These guys were just awesome together in “Talladega Nights”, and this next movie is no exception.

STEP BROTHERS is the story of Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (Reilly), 2 adult losers who act like children, can’t hold down jobs and still live at home. When Brennan’s mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) and Dale’s father Robert (Richard Jenkins) meet and fall in love, they soon decide to marry, and Brennan and Dale’s worlds get turned upside-down when they are forced to live together and become step brothers.

There is an automatic hatred between the two, and when they are forced to share a bedroom, the shit really hits the fan. Dale and Brennan are so rude and violent towards each other, you don’t know how they are going to survive.

Since Brennan and Nancy sold their home and moved into Dale and Robert’s, Dale lays down the one golden rule of the house – no one is to touch his drum set. When this rule is eventually broken by Brennan, the step brothers become involved in an all out brawl on the front yard. With their parents trying to break them up and the neighbours looking on, the fight is eventually stopped when they both smack each other in the head with a golf club and baseball bat, and simultaneously knock each other out.

Licking their wounds on the lounge, Robert tells the boys that he has no choice but to give them one week to find jobs, otherwise they are to find somewhere else to live. Nancy does not like this idea, but is forced to support her new husband.

When Brennan’s very successful, wealthy and mean brother Derek comes to visit, Robert is in such awe of him. He can’t understand how Nancy produced such a fantastic son like Derek, and such a loser son like Brennan. Dale and Brennan decide to go hang out in Dale’s tree house (yes, tree house!) because they can’t stand to hear anymore about how wonderful Derek is. They both agree that Derek is a jerk. So when Derek comes up to the tree house to pick on the guys, Dale punches him right in the face knocking him off the ladder. Brennan can’t believe that Dale just did what he has wanted to do his whole life. The guys begin to realise that they have more in common than they first thought, and become best friends.

Dale and Brennan need to team up to secure jobs and show their parents that they are responsible adults. Of course you know that this is not going to go smoothly. They come across many obstacles, including Robert’s determination to get them out of the house, the evil Derek, Derek’s crazy wife who is in love with Dale, their house being sold, Dale and Brennan trying to start their own business and Robert and Nancy’s marriage issues. And between the two of them they don’t make it easy on themselves – which is what makes this movie hilarious.

STEP BROTHERS is a funny, funny movie. It’s not rocket surgery, it’s not a deep and thought provoking masterpiece, it is just a funny, funny movie. Ferrell and Reilly are just perfect in their roles as Brennan and Dale. They play the adult loser role to a tee. And they will constantly have you laughing at all the shenanigans that they get up to (the brilliant idea of joining their two single beds and making them into bunk beds is just fantastic!!!) I really rate these two actors as a very successful comedy duo, and I really believe that it’s only onwards and upwards for Ferrell and Reilly.

STEP BROTHERS is a hilarious movie that is a must see for anyone who just wants to sit down and have a good laugh at a pair of big kids.

It’s 7 ½ out of 10 from me.

MR WOODCOCK – BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

November 25th 2008 03:11

Sometimes after a long week, all you want to do on a Friday night is sit down with a nice glass of wine and watch a great comedy. Nothing that you have to think about or analyze, just something that you can switch your brain off and have a good old laugh at. Unfortunately my partner and I didn’t just switch our brains off, we actually lost brain cells, and hardly laughed at all when we watched MR WOODCOCK.

JUNO - Just Brilliant

November 18th 2008 05:11
Every now and then you come across a movie that is so simple, yet so brilliant. It is usually the simple ones that get destroyed by an over enthusiastic director trying to add too much, or a terribly chosen lead actor that over does the role and takes away the realness of the character.

Thankfully, JUNO falls into the simple yet brilliant category

GET SMART didn't miss anything

October 29th 2008 03:02
If there was an award for the most perfectly casted leading man in a movie, then it would have to go to Steve Carell for his role in GET SMART. I mean, oh my God, it was like watching Don Adams from the original TV series on the big screen – just perfect.

Carell plays the loveable Maxwell Smart, the No. 1 analyst for the secret American intelligence agency known as ‘Control’. Max loves his job, but dreams of one day becoming a field agent like his idol, Agent 23 (played brilliantly by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is the story about couch potato Peter Bretter (Jason Segel – Knocked Up, How I met your Mother), whose heart is ripped out and life turned upside down when he is dumped by his girlfriend, television actress Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell – Veronica Mars, Heroes). Sarah has decided that Peter has not grown up in the 5 years they have been together, and she needs to be with someone more mature.

Peter becomes completely lost. Sarah was his whole world and he realises that he was just a small fish in her big pond. Not only does poor Peter have to work on the set of his ex’s hit series as a music composer, and watch her with her hunky co-star Billy Baldwin, he can’t even turn on the TV or pick up a magazine without seeing Sarah’s face
