After 1 week of finals football we are down to 6 teams. It all happened as expected in the end, despite a couple of close calls.
Adelaide well and truly demolished Essendon on Friday night to eliminate the Bombers.
Saturday was a great game at the G. Geelong in the end earned their week off, while the Bulldogs will have to play again this week.
Saturday night was an epic battle at the Gabba. Carlton looked to be setting the scene for a big upset, even into the final quarter. But the Lions put on a brilliant performance to come back and win to stay in the finals, while Carlton will be left to think about their last minute fall for the next few months.
And finally Sunday saw the Saints of old deal convincingly with the pies. The Saints will enjoy a week off, while Collingwood will play this week.
Friday night the Bulldogs play the Lions at the MCG. It will be a very interesting match. The Lions will be pumped after their hard faught win, while the Dogs have been playing great football in the last month. Bulldogs beat the Lions at the Gabba only a few weeks ago. Winner will play St. Kilda for a spot in the Grand Final.
Western Bulldogs by 4 goals.
Saturday night at the MCG again. The wounded and struggling Pies play the high flying Crows. It will be another tough match for both. Collingwood play the Crows well though. Winner to play Geelong for a spot in the Grand Final.
Collingwood by 2 goals.
Still predicting a Geelong vs. St. Kilda grand final. St. Kilda look the better team on form and on paper, but Geelong's 3rd Grand final appearance in as many years will help bucket loads.
Enjoy the Semi Finals. One more blog next week and maybe one after the Grand Final. Then i'll have a nice break before Pre Season 2010.
Finals are here. And they look exciting.
For the first time in many years we have 4 very interesting games. There is no 1 or 2 teams that look to have the Premiership sewn up.
First up on Friday night we have the Crows and the Bombers at AAMI stadium. The Crows are great at home, and fixed the Blues good last week, so shouldn't have any problems against a heavily depleted Essendon lineup. Winner to play loser of St. Kilda and Collingwood. Loser going home.
Adelaide to win.
Saturday Afternoon is one of the bigger games of the weekend. Geelong and the Bulldogs. Geelong have been struggling recently, but have beaten the Dogs narrowly on 2 occasions this season. Geelong also would not have been expecting to play the Dogs until the Sunday afternoon. This is a very hard game to pick. Geelong have lots of finals experience, but very little momentum. The Dogs haven't been regulars in September for a while, but are way up high with their recent form. Winner through to Preliminary final. Loser to play winner of Brisbane Carlton.
Bulldogs to win just.
Saturday night will be interesting. Carlton and Brisbane in Brisbane. Saturday night regulars. The Lions have proven hard to beat at home, and have had plenty of experience under the lights. Carlton were embarrassing last week, and were rightly embarrassed. They will not go without a fight. They have proven to be unpredictable this season. Winner plays the loser of Cats/Dogs. Loser is out.
Brisbane to win.
Sunday Afternoon is incredibly interesting. The Saints, the standout team for the season against the Pies, who have been mediocre recently, but have won some big games during the season. Neither team's lead up form has been ideal. St. Kilda have played at the G once this season in round 22 in an unconvincing win over Melbourne. Collingwood have won about 50% there this year. Its as good as a coin toss for this one. But I think St. Kilda has a bit more to prove.
St. Kilda to win by a very little bit.
This will give us for Semi finals.
Geelong vs. Brisbane. winner to play St. Kilda.
Collingwood vs. Adelaide. winner to play Western Bulldogs.
That's all for this week. Good luck to your team if you are still around.
What a weekend we've just had.
Here's a quick recap of what happened.
Friday night. Bulldogs beat the Cats to secure a top 4 spot.
Saturday at Docklands the Blues easily dealt with the Demons.
Adelaide won comfortably at home against the Eagles.
Saturday Night at the Gabba the Lions were too good for the Power.
At the MCG the Hawks beat the Tigers.
Sunday at Docklands the Roos pull off a massive upset against the Saints.
Collingwood do it easy against the Swans at the G
and Fremantle demolish the Bombers at Subiaco.
Here's how we're looking for the final round of AFL home and away football.
Friday night at Subiaco. Oh, what an anticlimax. West Coast play Richmond. This game has no bearing on the finals whatsoever. Richmond out to impress their new coach. If it can work for the Kangas against the best team in the league, who knows?
West Coast by 3 goals.
Saturday afternoon at Skilled Stadium the Cats play the Dockers. Again, no bearing on finals football.
Geelong by 10 goals.
At the MCG the Hawks play the Bombers. The winner will most likely get the 8th spot on the ladder. If its Essendon, they will be safe. If its Hawthorn, Port still have an outside chance.
Hawthorn by 3 goals.
Saturday at twilight at Docklands, the 3rd game on in Victoria on Saturday. Carlton and Adelaide. This match will decide 5th spot. If either team win big, there's a small chance of 4th. but they'd need to get 7 percent on the Bulldogs.
Carlton by 2 goals.
Saturday night at the SCG, the Swans play the Lions. The Swans can't make the 8. If the Lions win they will jump the loser of Adelaide/Carlton and get home ground advantage for the first week.
Lions by 5 goals.
And the 5th game on Saturday is in Adelaide. If Port Adelaide beat the Roos by a lot, and Hawthorn Beat Essendon by a little, they can make it in to the 8. Probably won't happen, but you never know. Especially after North Melbourne's performance last week.
Port by 4 goals.
Sunday afternoon at the MCG. St. Kilda have a fair bit of dignity to make up. Its lucky for them (and Geelong) to have such seemingly easy matches right before finals. Saints have Melbourne. They may as well play against witches hats and tackle bags.
St. Kilda by 10 goals.
And the final game of the H & A year is Collingwood and Bulldogs and is one of the bigger games this round. If the Bulldogs win big they could get 3rd and play the Cats again. Otherwise they will play the Saints, who are vulnerable at the moment.
Collingwood by 3 goals.
Which will leave the final ladder looking like this:
St. Kilda
Geelong
Collingwood
Western Bulldogs
Carlton
Brisbane
Adelaide
Hawthorn
Good luck.

As we approach September very quickly, each game becomes so much more important, as teams fight for the 8 spots to progress in finals football.
First up on Friday night at the MCG is Hawthorn and Adelaide. This should be a big game. The Crows have been very good all year. Hawthorn haven't, but have been better in past weeks, if you ignore the St. Kilda match. Put that with the fact that Hawthorn will be at home, and it should be a good match

Another great weekend of football past, and one less week until September. A few suprises, a few heart stoppers, and a few 'as expected' games.
I wouldn't say Carlton winning on Friday night was unexpected, but I wouldn't have minded to lose that tip for the retiring Adam Simpson's sake. The Kangaroos fought hard, but kicked inaccurately, which ultimately cost them a winnable game
