Dangerous Pets

In my lifetime I've owned a variety of exotic pets. Many successful and many not so. My first exotic pet was a turtle, that back in my days were kept in deplorable conditions. A salmonella outbreak eventually stopped their sales in pet shops.
I've had wild birds, exotic mammals, reptiles and amphibians. I don't really count fish but I've had them, too. I did wash my hands often anytime I came in contact with these pets or their cages.
My opinion today is that the exotic pet trade has gotten out of hand. This includes hamsters and gerbils. Although this article refers to children under 5, it should serve as a warning about keeping these exotic pets. Take note about petting zoos, too.
If you plan to keep an exotic pet, research before you buy. Many people entering the exotic pet trade are going in without much knowledge, and most pet shop owners are in it for the sale. This means they lack the knowledge, too. These animals can spread germs and bacteria, and other airborne diseases.
Always wash after handling the animal or anything in the cage. Keep its environment clean. Don't keep animals near kitchens or dining areas.
