The MTV Europe Awards 2006

November 3rd 2006 07:23
Justin Timberlake

The MTV Europe awards were held last night in Copenhagen and proved successful for ex-N*sync member, Justin Timberlake.

Not only did he host the awards, but he also won the awards for best pop act and best male artist.

He jokingly said that he won the best pop award because he agreed to host the evening.

One person that wasn’t so happy was Kanye West who was expecting to win the video category. The winner of the award was Justice Vs Simian with ‘We Are Your Friends’. It beats me whoever the hell they are.

Kanye claimed to have worked an entire month on the ‘Touch the Sky’ video and was disappointed to miss out on the award. You’d think, after all he’s been through, he’d be just a little bit modest, if not happy to be alive.

He even said:
"That was some complete bullshit, a spreading-the-wealth type thing."

The urban artists who performed include Nelly Furtado, P. Diddy, and Snoop Dogg.

Some of the night’s other successful artists included Gnarls Barkley, Christina Aguilera, Depeche Mode, The Killers, and Muse.

Take care and peace out…

ARIA awards round up

It’s been a great year in Australian music (excluding that group with Izzy from ‘Neighbours’)

The awards opened with an Eskimo Joe performance. It’s a shame they were nominated for the same awards as Wolfmother. They did win ‘single of the year’, however Wolfmother weren’t nominated for it. I guess victory wasn’t so sweet after all.

The Veronicas’ performance was sub-par. I expected more from the twins who, last year, sang a crafty acapella duet while presenting an award. This year, they were bland and vocally strenuous. Is it me or was the emo one lip-sincing like a sock puppet? Congratulations, anyway, for picking up ‘best pop release’.

Urban music represented with the Adelaide trio of the Hilltop Hoods, who won ‘best urban release’ and ‘best indie release’. They did great on stage, though it would be nice to see the production crew bother to test their mics before the performance. Or are sound tests only reserved for Aussie rock bands?

Speaking of which, Wolfmother - who won too many awards to bother mentioning - were awesome. They showed us what rock ‘n’ roll is all about, ie. swinging a keyboard like a child on ADHD and jumping like Michael Jordan. Who said white men can’t jump?

Bernard Fanning was absolutely sublime. His ARIA remix of the touching single ‘Say you’ll watch over me’ included vocals from a tall, hot, redhead chick, and Casey Chambers. I’m not a big fan of Chambers, though I have to say her interpretation was great. Props to the heavenly harmonies and Fanning’s alternate arrangement. More importantly, congratulations on winning ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’. Snatched right under Wolfmother’s nose; that’s what we like to see.

Pete Murray teamed up with John Mayer for a bare yet pleasing performance. The two performed together well, though I was disappointed that Mayer didn’t sing a verse. His guitar solo was great though wasn’t it?

I’m sad to admit I missed the Silverchair performance. Shame on me!!! I’ll slap myself in the face, don’t worry.

Congratulations to Midnight Oil who were inducted into the ARIA hall of fame.

Here are the winners of the main awards:

Album of the Year:
Bernard Fanning - Tea And Sympathy

Single of the Year:
Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine

Best Adult Contemporary Album:
Bob Evans - Suburban Songbook

Best Group:
Wolfmother

Best Male Artist:
Bernard Fanning

Best Rock Album:
Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Breakthrough Artist - Album:
Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Breakthrough Artist - Single:
Youth Group – Forever Young

Take care and peace out…

Soul to Rock: Guy Sebastian's new sound

October 28th 2006 10:36
Guy Sebastian, the first winner of Network Ten’s Australian Idol, has not lived up to expectations.

Well, maybe he has. His first album went six times platinum, but that does not take away from the fact that the first RUNNER-UP of Australian Idol, Shannon Noll, has enjoyed more commercial success

As you may remember, I recently posted an entry regarding Ras Kass’ lyrics that were intended to diss The Game. What ended up happening was a diss against Steve Irwin: The Crocodile Hunter.

Album Review: Food and Liquor

October 25th 2006 12:09
Lupe Fiasco is hip hop’s new kid on the block, and he’s turning heads. Everyone is talking about him, and for good reason. His debut album ‘Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor’ is a fabulous piece of social commentary.

The devout Muslim’s debut single: ‘Kick Push’, catapults Fiasco to the top of the game. The skater’s rap anthem instantly gives him a large following

Steve Irwin with Croc
R.I.P. Steve Irwin
Many Aussies out there felt the sorrow when one of Australia’s most recognisable icons, Steve ‘The Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin died from a stingray wound.

One and a half months later, an artist from the hip hop world is already using his death as a punchline

Horrorcore is an underground form of hip hop music that deals with themes you’d usually find in gore and death metal. It is hip hop at its most hardcore; it’s cool in a twisted sort of way and because of that, it will stay underground forever.

Russel Simmons (founder of Def Jam; and the man behind the horrorcore group ‘Flatlinerz’) defines horrorcore as "hardcore rap with some horror movie themes

on Kobe Bryant: Saint or Sinner?

October 22nd 2006 08:20
It was hard to believe there was once the lineup of Hakeem, Charles and Pippen. HAHAHA, oh how short lived that was hehe.

The teams with Cassel, Horry, Drexler, Kenny Wmith etc etc were awesome.

on Fabolous and Telfair in a criminal coincidence

October 20th 2006 08:45
You're telling me. I really liked him coming out of high shool. I saw some phenomenal videos of him.

Keep in mind he came steaight out of high school. The only highschooler who DIDN'T under-achieve at the beginning of his career was Lebron. ---> You could make a case for Kobe, but he wasn't a starter at the Lakers (thanks to Eddie Jones).

Players who perfectly fit the mold of high school ballers who took heaps long to develop:
Tracy McGrady, Jermaine O'Neal, Shawn Kemp, Kevin Garnett...

Thos who STILL sick: Kwame Brown, Al Harrington, Jonathon Bender, Telfair (as already mentioned). Um, that's all I can think of for now.

on DMX tours Australia for the first muthaf*ckin' time

October 19th 2006 10:08
The press release really over-exaggurated DMX's status in the rap world. I guess promotion is all about hype anyway.

Don't get me wrong, DMX is cool. He has one of the most unique rapping styles in the industry, but I would hardly call him 'King of the Hood".

He's great, but he is not influential to the rap or hip hop industry. If you want influential, you've got Dr. Dre, Nas, Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Timbaland, and a few others.

Take care and peace out...

on The Best Basketball Films Ever

October 19th 2006 10:00
My favourite baller film is 'He Got Game' without a doubt. I haven't seen Hoop Dreams though I've heard a lot about it.

Do you really think White Men Can't Jump is better than He Got Game?

I guess, if you're looking at the basketball itself, then He Got Game isn't that good, because there aren't any real basketball games being played. The only good basketball is the The climax where Jesus and his father play an extremely tense (physically, psychologically, and emotionally) game of 1on1.

That being said, I think it's the best baller movie because its the best movie (as opposed to having the best basketball). The acting is exceptional, and the plot is very dramatic.

on Kobe Bryant: Saint or Sinner?

October 19th 2006 09:54
I hate Kobe and all, though I hate Shaq more.

So when people start having their Kobe vs Shaq debates, I reluctantly take Kobe's side hahaha.

On just about any basketball forum on the web, you can feel thetension between Lakers and Heat fans. It's Hilarious.

Btw: The Rocket's are mah boys. Always have, always will be. GO HAKEEM!!

Who's your favourite team Stan?!

on CD vs Online music: Which do you like?

October 14th 2006 08:52
I think that a lot of artists put a lot of time and effort into planning or even creating there own album cover art. These days, programs like itunes and win media player can show cover art, but theres somethign different witha hard copy of a cover.

It's liek a piece of literature. The little booklets in the cd case have interesting tings to read. Lyrics, dedications, and seeing which tracks tha artist actually produced or played instruments in themselves.

The most interesting ting to read in a cd booklet is the special thanks section. A good example is Akon's album 'Trouble'. The specialthanks section in that really shows how Akon has evolved from his time in prison. The people he thanks, and the way he describes the process of making the album give's one a sense that he really persevered to create it.
