Cursing and Vocabulary
May 23rd 2009 09:12
Many of you will likely not like this post, and that's okay with me. I am just frustrated with the amount of cursing that goes on today and the lack of vocabulary that goes along with it. I will admit, however, that I'm as guilty as the next person about letting curse words fly when I get really angry or annoyed or upset. I try to limit this happening, but it does happen. I have a good example of this.
On Thursday I was driving to work when I suddenly realized I was three lanes to the left of where my exit was quickly approaching. I was lucky that the car to the right of let me over into that lane, the next lane was clear, and then I dashed in front of a tractor trailer to make my exit. Not smart, I know, and I wound up being late for work anyway. As this all was happening, the sh*t word popped out of my mouth once or twice, because I felt like an idiot. I've driven this course a hundred times, at least, and here I was driving like a tourist! So needless to say I was frustrated.
My normal curse words amount to things like "crap," "shoot," and "darn it," with the occasional "f that" thrown in for good measure. I suppose this could be considered a form of cursing, just milder in nature than the more popular form. I'm not talking about this because I think I'm better than anyone who uses curse words on a daily basis. It just bothers me sometimes. I know it has a lot to do with personality, plain and simple. It should not be a form of judgment, and yet I find that I do judge other people on this at times. I wish they had a bigger vocabulary.
In fact, if you want to build up your vocabulary, you can check out another blog I post called whatsinaword.net. I admit I don't take my own quizzes a lot of the time, but I try to retain the information throughout the week. I guess taking the quizzes at the end of the week would be helpful, even though I post the answers myself. (No cheating!)
So my point is that if someone builds his or her vocabulary, he or she can hopefully use those more sophisticated word when they need to rather than cursing. It shows intelligence and self-control, at least in my opinion.
