Current events, and swimming with the current (LINK)

Well, a nice local version of earthquake the other day. It was rated at 5.4, which is moderate, and well within the tolerances of most Californians. We've done a lot of retrofitting and good construction, so a 5.4, unless it's right at the surface which doesn't happen much, is really mostly entertaining for most of us.
It gives us a chance to see our local earthquake celebrities, Dr. Kate and Dr. Lucy. (Hutton and Jones) They're both at CalTech, and they've been the "go to" scientists for earthquakes for as long as I remember. It was a shock to see Kate with completely white hair! (Although she looked great, way to go, Kate!)
Some minor damage and injury, but nothing really frightening. We get used to guesstimating, and you can sort of tell the magnitude (actually, they don't use the Richter scale anymore) by how long the quake continues and what kind of motion you're feeling. Actually, I guessed this one as smaller and closer than it turned out to be. I figured 4.5 at Big Bear, about 30 miles away. (Chino Hills is about 65 miles from here.)
Ha'ui has warned that this is just a precursor, and Dr. Kate concurred, "This was a dress rehearsal for the big one." I know there will be more to come. That's one thing on which the spirits and scientists concur. Ha'ui also says not to be distracted by the earthquakes, that other natural events will occur, but most damage will be human-made. Also, it won't be global, rather a lot of local things that just keep happening, earthquake here, hurricane there, cold-ass fall and winter here, no monsoons there.
Heed the warnings and keep at least a month's supply of food and water on hand. It's easy to do. Remember to rotate the stock, so that when you really need it you're not eating two year old food. Just keep a stock in the garage (or wherever) and when you come home from the grocery store, unload into the garage. Take the oldest off the shelves and into the kitchen, and put the newest stuff at the back. And don't forget batteries and toilet paper. The batteries will keep better in the refrigerator, not so much the toilet paper.
Above all, don't be afraid. 2012 doesn't mean the end of the world, merely the start of a new way of being. Many people have already chosen not to be here for it or after it, but most of us aren't going anywhere other than earth very soon. Just start learning how to grow vegetables and raise chickens and goats.
This was more than I intended to say, but Ha'ui needed to get her two cents in. (She's laughing at me.)
BTW, I've recently discovered a set of books that contains much truth and wisdom, which aren't always the same thing.
XOXO,
Patty
