Last day in Hanoi

February 4th 2008 09:04
I'll be leaving Hanoi in about 6 hours, heading south on the sleeper train to Hue, on the central coast of Vietnam. Hanoi has certainly been a great place to hang around for a while - and the people I've met have really breathed life into this trip for me. Last night at around 6pm I had nothing to do, there was nobody in my dorm room and I was starting to feel quite depressed; thinking about the ex-girlfriend I left behind in London and who I always miss terribly during those quiet moments, and wishing I had some emails from friends - you know that feeling when you're sure you'll have a few and check your inbox to find nothing...?

Anyway, I ended up having my best night here so far, eating on a very busy street packed with locals crowded around little tables - the food was fantastic and I was with a group of people from the hostel - all of whom were great. I had a really interesting conversation with a Texan guy who I might well meet up with in Hue in the next day or two, as well as a couple of English girls - it is always nice to spend a bit of time with people from your own country...

Must admit to feeling quite apprehensive about Hue - I won't be in a hostel there so I know it will be a bit tougher to meet people to hang about with, and the fact that it's the Lunar New Year (Tet) from the 7th until roughly the 10th means that a lot of places will be shut down and I might not be able to book trips and things. I'll just have to take it as it comes; maybe having a few quiet days will do me good, as well as teaching me not to worry too much about meeting people to hang around with and to get more used to my own company, I feel that I still have a lot of 'toughening up' or growing to do, as I do tend to start feeling down quite easily...

Thanks to AmyHuang and Lilla for the comments on the last post - I will add pictures when I get hold of the right USB lead - and will be posting again very soon. Keep the comments coming, it's what makes blogging worthwhile. I was quite pleased with 60 votes for the last post too, hoping to get that to grow as I go on...

Journey into Indochina so far

February 2nd 2008 05:03
I arrived in Hanoi 24 hours ago - and I'm still coming to terms with how cold it is having come here from Brisbane! It's about 5 degrees or something, probably should have done some research into the climate before I arrived! Luckily I did bring a couple of jumpers, both of which I've worn since the minute I got my bag at the airport (I came in shorts and T-shirt - a BIG mistake!). I have to say that Hanoi is a cool city, (excuse the pun) its ridiculously hectic but the people seem friendly and the food is great. I'm staying at the Backpacker's hostel, and have already met some decent people - we went to a Jazz bar last night with a live band and it was good vibes all round...

I leave Hanoi on Feb 4th to head south to Hue, described as 'the intellectual and cultural heartbeat of VIetnam' in the Lonely Planet, so that should be interesting. It would be great if anyone reading this who has been there can recommend stuff to do / not to do in that area, or if there happnes to be anyone who will also be there and fancies meeting up... The lunar New Year (Tet) takes place while I'm there 6th-about 10th Feb, and apparently most stuff shuts down and it's a bit dead at this time, so looks like I will have plenty of reading / writing time on my hands. Having said that, I'm hoping for to see some public celebrations (not exactly sure what goes on) and am looking forward to the opportunity to spend a bit of time with some of the locals. I'm also hoping to rent a motorbike to check it out even though I left my driving license behind in oz, and maybe it will be nice in a way to experience a bit of 'down time' after the craziness of Hanoi.

From there I will head on down to Saigon, taking in the places that sound cool along the way, and then into the Mekong Delta. Apparently there's good homestays down there with floating markets and suchlike, and I'm already looking forward to staying with a Vietnamese family and getting a more authentic experience. I am meeting friends in Thailand on 2nd March, so maybe I'll take a week or so in Cambodia before I head over there, really looking forward to some time in the sun in Thailand with some people I know with this first month being done alone (but I'm assured it will be a lot hotter in the south of Vietnam...)

Travelling alone certainly offers a big experience, if a very daunting one at times. It forces you to make contact with those around you, and is a great way of meeting a variety of people - something I didn't really do on previous trips where I've been with people throughout. Feeling very philosophical at the moment, and it really strikes you how much there is out there if you have the opportunity to travel and just go for it - though I will admit to having a freak-out in SIngapore airport while I was waiting for my transfer! It's important just to 'ride out' the times when you feel like just booking a flight home, wasting this kind of opportunity would be a disaster when you looked back on it I think.

Overall, I already feel that this will be a growing experience for me personally, even after just a couple of days, as well as obviously being a chance to take in a totally different culture and see some great scenery - the Mekong Delta looks amazing from the pictures I've seen. I would welcome comments from those who've done this trip (I know it's a well-trodden path) or are having similar experiences/feelings travelling alone elsewhere.

Will update this blog as I go if I get some votes and people seem interested, probably going for a more philosophical approach rather than a descriptive one. It feels really imprtant to write about this stuff along the way, putting your own feelings into perspective...
