Last day in Hanoi
February 4th 2008 09:04
I'll be leaving Hanoi in about 6 hours, heading south on the sleeper train to Hue, on the central coast of Vietnam. Hanoi has certainly been a great place to hang around for a while - and the people I've met have really breathed life into this trip for me. Last night at around 6pm I had nothing to do, there was nobody in my dorm room and I was starting to feel quite depressed; thinking about the ex-girlfriend I left behind in London and who I always miss terribly during those quiet moments, and wishing I had some emails from friends - you know that feeling when you're sure you'll have a few and check your inbox to find nothing...?
Anyway, I ended up having my best night here so far, eating on a very busy street packed with locals crowded around little tables - the food was fantastic and I was with a group of people from the hostel - all of whom were great. I had a really interesting conversation with a Texan guy who I might well meet up with in Hue in the next day or two, as well as a couple of English girls - it is always nice to spend a bit of time with people from your own country...
Must admit to feeling quite apprehensive about Hue - I won't be in a hostel there so I know it will be a bit tougher to meet people to hang about with, and the fact that it's the Lunar New Year (Tet) from the 7th until roughly the 10th means that a lot of places will be shut down and I might not be able to book trips and things. I'll just have to take it as it comes; maybe having a few quiet days will do me good, as well as teaching me not to worry too much about meeting people to hang around with and to get more used to my own company, I feel that I still have a lot of 'toughening up' or growing to do, as I do tend to start feeling down quite easily...
Thanks to AmyHuang and Lilla for the comments on the last post - I will add pictures when I get hold of the right USB lead - and will be posting again very soon. Keep the comments coming, it's what makes blogging worthwhile. I was quite pleased with 60 votes for the last post too, hoping to get that to grow as I go on...
