Christmas Tree Craft for Kids

December 5th 2010 11:34
Family craft time is a great way to decorate your home for Christmas as well as spend quality time building great memories with your kids. My friend Tammy Waters comes up with the most interesting crafts for kids and featured today is a felt Christmas Tree made from handprints.

We've all seen the turkeys from handprints that are popular at Thanksgiving, so this is a nice twist for the Christmas holiday. Tammy says that you could also make this craft from construction paper, but felt is probably a better medium if you want it to hold up to years of use.

Tammy shares several ways to decorate your handprint Christmas Tree. Click here to see how, then grab the kids and your bin of craft supplies and get started!

Free Cable Stitch Hat and Scarf Pattern

December 4th 2010 14:47
I love finding pretty crochet stitches and writing up simple hat and scarf patterns to make from them to share with my crafting friends. This hat and scarf were made with a simple cable stitch, and although it isn't like the knit cable, it's still pretty and can be used for lots of projects. I plan on amending the scarf pattern on a larger scale to make an afghan.

The basic pattern stitch and directions for the scarf can be found here.

The hat starts off with a basic DC circle, increasing with each round until you get to the size needed, then adding a few rows of the cable stitch to finish it off. The hat pattern can be found here.

Since I find it hard sometimes to visualize how a stitch is made just from written directions, I've taken pictures of how to complete the cable stitch and posted a visual tutorial here.

Enjoy!

Favorite Crochet Stitch

December 1st 2010 13:25
My favorite crochet stitch is very easy to do and can be used for a multitude of projects. It simply consists of a SC and DC in the same stitch, and skip one stitch in between. Told you it was simple!

I make scarves, hats, baby blankets, afghans - you name it - with this crochet stitch.

Here's the basic scarf pattern. Just make it larger if you want a baby blanket or afghan.

Here's the hat pattern to match the scarf.

favorite crochet stitch,
Just two things I've made from this simple crochet stitch

Here's more photos showing how you can crochet many different scarves just by modifying the number in your starting chain, adding stripes, etc.

Trust me, once you start making things with this little cluster crochet stitch, you'll see that the possibilities are endless!

How to Join Granny Squares With a Braid

October 27th 2010 11:18
Have you seen the flat braid join method of putting granny squares together? It was a life-saver for me!

I've been crocheting for years but for some reason it took me a while to master the basic granny square. No one had ever shown me how to crochet in rounds, and my squares always ended up off-kilter somehow

What Kind of Crochet Yarn to Buy

August 22nd 2010 00:03
If you're just learning to crochet, trying to figure out what type of yarn to use can be daunting. It would be easy if you could just go in the craft or yarn store and pick a color you liked, but there are several factors to consider first.

Not all yarns are the same thickness, or ply. Some are heavier weight than others, which can affect how the pattern will turn out. Some types of yarn are softer than others making them more suitable for a certain type of project. Many are made from synthetic or man-made fibers, while others are spun from natural animal hair and even plant material like cotton or bamboo
