Cradle Mountain - Tasmania
May 7th 2011 23:35
It could be because I’m a female driver, or simply because I’ve opted out of paying extra insurance for the rented car and I’m worried I might hit a wombat or kangaroo (goodbye AUD$2500 if I do), but the drive to the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park from Launceston feels longer than the 2hr advertised time.
Entry deep into the national park has knocked out any form of reception. The sky darkens and my mind is flicking through every serial killer movie I can think of. I’m praying my car doesn’t break down anytime soon (or ever).
Arrival at ‘Cradle Mountain Lodge’ brings a mixture of relief and excitement. The impressiveness of these suites is what every lodge should be. Warm fires, pleasant staff, grand and luxurious cabin rooms. The price range of this 4 1/2 star place can go all the way up to AUD$760. Lucky for me I managed to get a staff discount (from affiliation) and the cost was more like AUD$120p.n (which is amazing considering the upgraded room I ended up in and the place itself.)
The next morning after a full buffet breakfast, I part with a small registration fee (to enter the national park) and take the trail to Dove Lake. It’s an enchanting walk through Australian bushland and only takes the day to get there and back again. (For those who don’t want to walk, there is a shuttle to and from the car park, but you’d miss out! For those who want a challenge, there is a climb up to the summit of the mountain itself.)
The next day I am greeted by a rare sight for city-folk like myself. The green world turns overnight into a winter wonderland: SNOW!
