CPM...

July 19th 2008 14:38
...stands for Chronic Pain Managment, this is a program offered by Kaiser to help patients who suffer from chronic pain cope and manage. What do they think we have been doing all this time. The orientation alone was painful and anxiety ridden. Jumping through hoops is the term that comes to mind, why? Because a referral from your PCP, primary care physician, Kaiser is big on buzz words and they all speak as if they were texting you instead of standing right before you, even when clinicians are in the room they are not present.
Back to CPM, they are classes that run a twenty hour per five week course that will be a combination therapy for pain relief, this program I thought was to be designed to the individual and his/her needs, it is not. In the first place, if I could attend anything for twenty hours weelky I would committ to employment, so I wouldn't have to THINK about my pain. It is a program that has probably been set in stone since its conception thirteen years back. It is not geared for the individual but to the masses who suffer pain and in the hopes that one of these "tricks" will work in allevaiting your pain. Did you ever hear so much rhetoric in your life. We pay ten grand a year for health insurance only to be snowballed by our own health care providers.

Am I upset, no I am scared to death, because what alternatives do I or others have but to jump through the hoops in order to be taken care of somewhat properly. Plus, you better be prepared for anything because you will need to become your own health liason and advocate. Don't commit to memory what you need to say to your clinician, write it down, they have this special knack with medical doubletalk, write your questions down, be specific, and don't settle for any pact answer, settle only for the answer to the specicfics you requested.

I sound bitter, I am not, like I said I am scared. Hosptials and their staff hold our health in their hands and more often then not those hands are closed, clasped tightly.
The classes start in the latter part of August, I have time to think about it with less emotions as time passes, that's a good thing. There are all these regs, rules, protocal and procedures that have to be followed, very specific dos and don'ts, odd things, controlling things. even down to signing a release to be filmed or photographed. I find the whole thing uncomfortable and not geared for it's intent which is to relieve stress and tension in hopes to alleviate pain, but they actually contribute to it and they think that they are helping, this could be pernicious.
I don't know what this program is geared to do, but there must always be opposition because they even play a tape at the end of the sessions which is geared to those emotions, very manipulative.
Well, I have said my share, take heed, doctors are not gods and they make thoughtless and senseless mistakes, question everything, twice, three times if necessary.
