CORONATION STREET

January 11th 2007 00:28
I don't usually get caught up in soaps, but this one is different. My wife is from England and she loves the show, so I really had no choice but to watch it. I couldn't figure out why it was different than American soaps, but I finally figured it out.
In American soaps, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get anything done, and then it is all done in a grave manner. Coronation Street gives you the serious side plus the humourous side all in one episode and wraps up the main details in one airing. The accents are a bit hard to get over as they don't speak the Queen's English, but with careful listening you can get over that. It takes a bit to understand the different idioms they have when they speak, but let's face it, that trolley goes both ways.

I've also gotten into Emmerdale. It's a mirror image of Coronation Street, but with a few more twists. It's great, but I hope I don't get addicted to them. My wife is a stay at home wife and I don't really care what she watches.
I hate layoffs. I have to watch what she wants. I have to get back to work.

When I'm home, the wife is stuck with football and golf. She would like to be someplace else sometimes! Your soaps sound good. Are they on CBC? The wife might like them.

Sounds like you have better programming on CBC than we get on some of our channels. I mostly watch Fox News Channel, but I like CSI and a few forensic programs, too. A little viewing variety wouldn't be a bad thing...

Golf Don? Geez that's like watching paint dry. My Dad was a golfer and we had running feuds of who brought homs a cardboard score card and who brought home dinner. (I like fishing, lol) Yeah, the show is on CBC. I was surprised at how much attention it got when they announced it would be on 5 days a week in prime time. It used to be just Sunday mornings for an hour. My wife, being English, loves it but she says it is still about 6 months behind what she saw over there.
SL, CBC does have some very good programming, but sometimes it really sucks. I'm lucky enough to have a choice between American TV and Canadian. CSI is good, in fact so good it got my daughter to go into forensics in university. I also love House and NCIS. As for Canuck shows, Rick Mercer's Report is brilliant as is This Hour Has 22 Minutes. On The Road Again is good and so is Wings Over Canada.
