Are You Ready for Some Fishing???

April 20th 2012 20:33
You could probably say that I'm not a serious blogger...and that would be correct, you might say I'm not a serious fisherman (yeetadee!!!), that would be soooo wrong. I get it in, and in a major way. Fishing is life and life is fishing...how's the fishing in your neck of the woods? The northern California freshwater fishing scene has been another interesting one this year as it was last year. Last year we had plenty rain and it started early and heavy, this year it didn't start till March but it came in with a roar!!! So yeah, the lakes are filling up, the snow pack got deeper and the temperatures are getting warmer!!!! Black bass time, they stage off shore until the lake hits that magic temperature and on to the shallows and shoreline they come to set up house. Are you casting your lures straight most of the time? Stop it!!! Focus on casting on parallell lines in relation to the shoreline. When you finish with that, cast in a 180 degree half circle. Look for grassy clumps, shoreline inconsistencies and cover in or close to the water.

If course my go to lure is my 5" senko worm, blue and black laminate, defintely have some 6" on standby cause the big boys want big bait. We've been landing many fish in the 4-6lb range. I've reintroduced myself to the spinner bait. I never had confidence in this lure before and I've never really given it a chance. With lots of rain during the prespawn you gotta present something that they can see and the blades on the spinner bait do the trick in the somewhat cloudy water. Use black spinner baits for night fishing, multi-colored during the day. I'm heading out tonight, can't wait, hopefully this weekend I can pick up from where I left off, wherever that was. Happy Fishing!!!

Crappie Anyone???

January 12th 2012 23:06
Greetings,
Happy New Years 2012!!! How are your fishing exploits lately? Our 2011 black season had to be the best on record. Caught nice numbers of fish, right up until the late part of October and a few in early December. My feet were getting awful cold and I knew my season was coming to an end. I did get me some LaCrosse Iceman Boots last month and my toes are happy again. Me an Alfred went out to our favorite northern Cali bass hole the week after New Years. I decided that the black bass wouldn't want to be bothered, so I brought a dozen minnows and some light tackle. I also brought a few jumbo minnows in case a black bass changed it's mind (it didn't). I slapped on a lighted bobber a split shot an a minnow and we were off, Alfie stuck with black bassin (silly fellow). Initial casts were longer, 20-30 ft., then I began focusing closer, 0-10 ft. from the shore. Finally the most beautiful sight you'll ever see (besides your wife and children) was that red light lurch below the surface and bringing that first silvery slippery devil out of the water. Of course crappie are school fish so I stayed put a bit, then moved a bit in the same general area, zerowing in a the hot spots. I tried the jumbo minnow for black bass to no avail. Caught ten crappie that night, none slabbers but hopefully it's a sign of things to come. My feet were much warmer than before, though I expected them to be sweating, I'm grateful for the improvement. The problem were are now having in nothern California is NO RAIN!!!! January is supposed to be the sacramento Valley's heaviest month of rainfall, December didn't do nuthin!!! It's already almost mid January 2012 and still NO RAIN!!! Last winter we had awesome rain and an awesome snow pack!!! This winter so far is looking shabby, the ski resorts are understandibly worried. I might try an hit them crappie again this weekend since I got the extra day, we'll see. God Bless

Things Are Heating Up!!!

May 25th 2011 00:25
Hey Fishing Fans,
Man, the fishing last weekend was off the chain...the temperatures have been trending upwards, we're moving deeper into the later Spring earlier Summer season and let's face it the fish gotta bite eventually. Our location in northern Ca. offers several opportunities to test your skills, I have an affinity for bluegills especially ones that lean into the 11" category, they fight good, taste great and will bite my 4" split tail grub. Pumpkin was my color of choice that evening, having had success with that color with black bass at that lake in the past. The big bluegills were gobbling up my split tail grub like nobody's business, me and my push button pole were having a good time. For a change I tried a lighted bobber and some night crawler...again success!!! Nothing better than a dancing lighted bobber doing tricks on the surface before deftly sliding under the surface!!! On one occasion the bobber went quickly down, I set the hook and started reeling in but the bobber stayed under fairly deep, when it got close I realized I had a nice black bass on the other end, by the time I realized it the bass broke my 2lb-4lb test mono-filament and went on his way, dang!!!! The 5" senko style worm I was using for bass was effective in many spots, particularly where there were weed patterns and transition points. The color was deep red and black in a somewhat striped pattern. Needless to say we got our limits, my larger bass was almost 20" and 4lbs-5lbs. My boy Roy did even better and has been doing better with size of fish, he's pulling 3-4 "big boys" out the water the last 3 trips, I'm talking 4lbs-7lbs, for shore fishermen keeping it simple, we're pleased. Anyway, looking forward to getting out this sunday night and doing it all again, until then, God Bless You, please drop a note sometime.

Pre Spawn Bite 2011?

April 14th 2011 03:14
Hello Anglers,

It's your guy Corey; it's been a super long time and I've missed y'all! You'd think as much as I love fishing I'd be blogging away; particularly when the fish begin biting; as they are doing now. Mother nature has blessed us with an awesome downpour of rain this winter, snow pack is good and all is good in the world in Northern California(fishing

Pre Spawn Bite?

April 29th 2010 22:47
Greetings From Sacramento!!! Man I can't believe I haven't posted since February, gotta do better...Well we've been to our favorite NorCal hole several times since last posting, probably almost once a week, bite has been up and down, little more up lately. With the erratic weather patterns we've been experiencing ie; consistent lower than normal temps, windy, gusty conditions, frequent rain fall patterns and high lake levels. I'm wondering if the fish are a little confused as to what they're supposed to be doing, not even a significant number of caught fish have had eggs, though most of my partners fish lately have had eggs, it's just so hard to tell. As you can tell, we're old schoolers, we fish from the bank and try to read the fishing conditions the best we can, we love fishing magazines and fishing shows and try to learn all we can from them, much of our success just comes from intuition, gut and plain ole fashion luck. I've hit my limit of black bass on the last two trips, occasionally aggressive panfish hit our rubber lures but we rarely hook them, when I fish for them with the night crawlers and bobber, they rarely seem to bite so I more or less leave them alone. Am I a catch and release type guy...hecks no, catch fillet and fry (or grill). I respect the conservationists, but that ain't me, I'm trying to eat!!!! The rubber lures I'm having fun using are of the $.25 variety in the loose bins at Fisherman's Warehouse, grubs, worms with the long curly flat tails, and lizards, no need spending big bucks on lures if you don't have to, soon it'll be time to throw some cranks and some surface lures, nothing like throwing a jitterbug out there like my Dad used to do and hear that splash of the bite of a nice black (big mouth) bass. Anyway, just wanted to check in, it's been too long and I missed you guys Happy Fishing!!

No Luck Saturday Night

February 23rd 2010 06:51
Well, Roy and I went black bass fishing (large mouth for you east coast folks he he) Saturday night at our favorite northern California fishing hole, we were hopeful that the conditions would be favorable for us, but alas, they were not, too windy, a bit chilly and too much water in the lake(if you can believe that). On top of all that, it just wasn't time, seems like the last few years nothing has really jumped off for us until March, looks like the pattern will hold true again this yeah...dang!! There have been years we have caught fish as early as December and January, as a east coast native that tickles me pink cause bass fishing is unheard of until at least the spring as far as I can remember. Actually, I caught a 3ib black bass this past December 27th, lest I forget, Roy caught two 14-15 in. bass and myself one night before last. We used rubber worms 4-6 inches, split tail grubs 4 inch, I tried a light colored spinner bait and wish I had black or a darker color, tried a minnow style swim bait, nothing really worked. We also use Power Pro green moss braided string with the 30lb test strength. We're gonna give it another two weeks and try again. Go get em'

Here We Go Again!!!!

February 19th 2010 18:59
]Welcome to my fishing blog. I'm not a professional, at certain levels, I don't know very much about fishing. I do know that I LOVE IT, fishing that is, and that's all that matters. So if you LOVE fishing like I do, I welcome your constructive criticism, fishing stories, wisdom, experience and tips. Actually I want this to be a fun blog, sort of like a fishing fellowship.

I'm located in Sacramento, Ca., been living here about 4 years, nice place, I'm located in the Natomas neighborhood. My fishing success in Sacramento hasn't gone very well, so my friends and I still go to tested and tried holes that we've always fished...yeah we gotta get out more but that's easier said than done...we working on it. In the mean time...go git em!!!!
