"Core of music." So I ask: Does it even EXIST? (LINK)
May 21st 2008 05:36
I'd first like to thank "the only person who commented on my 2nd post" for his comment that made me want to elaborate on it so much that I decided to make it a "formal" post rather than a short response. It actually took me a few hours to put this into words, for a lack of a better word
~ but i enjoyed dicing it out on paper. I hope I answered your question.
My formal definition of core of music is: central to the character and existence of music which in my opinion, is open to an individuals interpretation.
My interpretation:
The cognitive response(s) that is developed when experiencing music. Not just listening, not playing, not singing, not writing, and enjoying, but experiencing.
An experience of disability even for those few seconds of sound that it limits us from our physical being. In fact, in my opinion, this is the "self" that our standardized society perceives as strange, weird and otherwise known as musicians, or artists in general.
I should add that my interpretation has evolved, and possibly developed over time. However, my intention in my previous post was to credit him (my first piano instructor) with guiding me with his developed experience to appreciate these aspects of music in more in depth fashion.
Again it was not my intention to insinuate that "core of music" has a standard universal definition. I simply chose the word to paint the essence of my feeling towards the art.
