Following the snail trail

It's that time of year again when Cbeebies has its Springwatch. Last year Callum didn't really take too much interest in it but boy is that the opposite this year. Each time we venture outside he's on a mission to find "bugs" of any form. We've hunted for woodlice in our front garden and watched ants bumping into each other and making us laugh and we've sang the Ladybird Ladybird song to countless ladybirds found in my flowers out back. We watched sparrows taking baths in the big puddles on the cafe roofs near where we live and watched the Pigeons being chased off the roofs by the big huge black bird that we have no idea what it is. I think a fun time has been had.

Now we have another item to put on our Springwatch list, this one is following snail trails (although I do have to confess they aren't real ones just ones that Callum "sees"). The real snail watch started a few weeks ago while the three of us were shopping at B&Q, on the walk through the car park we saw a snail moving along the footpath so we stopped and watched for a bit. Callum was fascinated by it and the trail that you get to see. We told him that we'd check on the way back to see how far the snail had gone. Sadly poor Mr Snail #1 had "moved home"... yes someone had stepped on the poor thing but rather than upset Callum we just told him that snails can move home, he didn't seem to notice too much the snail remains trod into the ground. Since then he has been keeping a keen eye out for more snails and was enthralled last week when we came out of playschool (in the pouring rain) to see the church notice board covered in snails. I think we counted about 20 plus snails. Of course by yesterday (Monday morning) all but two had gone and so this morning we had to look for their trails and find where they had gone. The conversations that took part were so funny

A Street Car named... Sarah

As everyone knows Callum loves cars, he even dreams about them (yes he tells me before he goes to bed and when he gets up about them all!), he does have other loves but cars are top and the utter mostest bestest. So you'll not be surprised to hear that every weekday morning before we head off for playschool that upon asking him what he would like to take for the show and tell table that his answer is... yes wait for it... CARS!!!! If he had his way he'd take his whole big bucketful but alas it's too heavy for him to carry and I flatly refuse to carry it (too heavy for me also. *laugh*) and so we've settled on him not being allowed to take no more than three cars (one for him and one each for his friends Henry and James).

This morning it was the normal ritual of choosing which cars to take. That sorted out and all the other ones put back in their little bucket home (and of course Callum fully dressed!) we head off to playschool. Now here's the other thing about that little monkey monster of mine... every complete stranger you meet in the street will come up and talk to him, we now have a whole little journey to playschool made of saying hello to people who we don't know but who we see each day and who stop and talk to Callum, they all ask about which car he has today and get to look and hold it. It's very cute but also it does make us late on occasions for playschool. *laugh

Songs of the Day.

June 21st 2007 10:36
Music is an important thing and is nearly always being played in our home, or being sung, hummed, tapped out and so on. So I thought I'd try each day to have two songs that I'm loving and post the lyrics and why I like these songs so much.

Today's choices are

HAppy Birthday Nan!

June 18th 2007 13:37
Saturday gone was my Nan's birthday, she was 84 years old. For the special occasion my Mum had a little party for her, just close family. What was great that a few weeks ago my Nan had been in hospital and even though we all put on a brave face I think we were very concerned. Thankfully she's now out of hospital and although not looking 100% is looking better. It was a great afternoon and we even got to see my Auntie Ida and Uncle Paul which until recently (while my Nan was in hospital) we hadn't seen each other in ages, I think the last time they may have seen Callum he was only a few months old and he's going to be four years old next month. Unfortunately the weather was awful and it rained most of the day so there was no BBQ but plenty of my Mum's good old cooking and it did eventually hold off raining long enough to allow Callum and his cousins Eloise and Alex a play out in the garden... and some peace and quiet for the adults. As always I had my camera with me so here are a few photos (mostly of the children)

The Funny Things Children Say

June 15th 2007 20:06
Children always have that innocence about them and I love how the simplest of things can have a different meaning to a child. So here are some examples from Callum lately.

As with most children Callum is (again) going through the "I'd rather play than eat food stage". Each time I ask him what he'd like for lunch or dinner or if he's hungry his response (well apart from "A surprise Mummy.") is "I'm a Playboy not an eating boy!" to him it's something simple he's saying but to me I obviously see both ways of that word and it gives me a little chuckle, especially seeing that he apparently has a little harem at playschool. I just wonder if he'll his occupation in later years will be International Playboy

A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

June 5th 2007 10:36
This weekend we visited my in-laws. While there my father-in-law Eric showed us his newest gadget, it was one of those Digital Photo Frames. My FIL loves photography and he's pretty good at catching a good picture. While looking at the photos he'd put on (which were from our trip to Old MacDonald's Farm) I thought about what makes a good photo and the stories you can get from just a simple picture.

Then yesterday while talking on a messageboard a friend posted this photo he'd come across

It's a Shrubbery!

June 3rd 2007 08:49
Yesterday morning Daz, Callum and I headed off out into town. While I was in the bank Daz took Callum to Woolworths to buy some new Hot Wheels cars to go with a new track we'd bought him. On the way over to Woolworths they walked past another bank and a guy was outside and said: "I'd love to walk into the bank with a plant and say Hands up it's a Shrubbery." Callum found this hysterical and started laughing to which the guy turned round to Daz and said "You have an awesome Kid, he found my joke funny."

It's great how kids find such simple jokes funny... although I did give a little chuckle myself at the joke when Daz told me the story. I wonder now if Callum will go back to creating his own jokes, it's a stage he went through earlier this year and the funniest thing was that the jokes just made no sense
