The beach was deserted. GOOD,I hate crowds. Actually, I despise them.
Stay alert Max. My voice wasn't helping. No freaking duhI retorted in my head. Gazzy, Iggy, Fang, Angel, and Nudge had already changed into their bathing suits. I went to a changing tent which was literally a tent. I reached into my backpack for a bathing suit, but instead I pulled out a bikini.
" No effing way!" I practically ripped apart my backpack looking for a one piece. But knowing my luck I never found one.
" Great. Just what I need." I got changed and shyly(SP?) stepped out of the tent. I felt so exposed. Thank god the beach was deserted. The entire flock noticed.
" Wow you look really good," Angel and Nudge said at the same time.
" Ooh-la-la!" Gazzy and Iggy loved to harass me all the time. But Fang was silent. Not that it was unusual, but I had expected him to make fun of me.
" Shut up, I can still kick your butts!" I ran to the water and toward a rock that could serve as a diving board. I flew 10 feet into the air, did a somersault, and executed the perfect dive. I must have gone 12 feet under. It felt great. When I sufaced I was rewarded with applause.
" Thankyou, thank you," I answered. We swam for hours, until it was getting dark. Then we took turns in the changing tent. I was last. As I was pulling on my shoe i heard a muffled scream. I peeked out of the tent. The others were gagged and tied to a palm-tree. Just as I rushed out of the tent, I came face-to-face with the barrel of a gun.
" You were Right Max," Ari just great, " It wasn't over."
" Let them go." I couldn't belive my eyes. We were just in the water having a great time.
" No, unless you agree to come with me to a special place, and let me cut off your wings. If you do, your friends live. If you don't, they die while you wathch and then we kill you."
" Well, I won't get my wings cut off. I refuse." I couldn't believe this butt-head.
" Fine, you can keep the wings."
" Then where is this place," I asked. The flock let out gasps. They knew that I was accepting his offer to save them.
" MAX NO!!" Angel was screaming and crying at the same time.
" The it is settled. We release your flock and you come with me."
" Yes," I answered against my will, " But I want to say good-bye to them first. Alone, and with more than 20 seconds. I want long good-byes." I was quite the negotiator.
" S o be it." Angel was let go first, along with Nudge. We knelt in the sand. They kept saying that I couldn't go and that they loved me. I returned the I love you too's, and explained to them that I had to go. Next Gazzy came over and it was a repeat of what I said to Angel and Nudge biut with some more tears and calming words. Next was Iggy. We hugged and said our good-byes. Last was Fang. I was on the verge of having a total break-down.
" Why?" That was all he said. Why.
" To save you guys." I really didn't want to leave with Ari.
" Do you want to be with Ari? Do you love him or something?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing!
" No, but you guys would die!"
" Do I have to spell it out for you?"
" Spell what ou for me?" I was very confused.
" Max, I love you. Not as a sister, but more!" I was stunned. " Well say something."
" I like you too, actually I love you too. But I have to do this." I could tell that he was mad. But instead of taljing, he leaned down and kissed me. Not the granma peck, not the I'm to youg for this kiss, but the I love you kiss. It was passionate and fierce. when we pulled away it was like death.
" I will come find you." He was my hero.
" I hope so." that was the final good-bye.
