The Mosque at Ground Zero...

I tried really really hard. I tried REALLY hard. I promise I did. I tried not to jump into the question, fray, political commentary on the question of the proposed mosque near the sacred site of the former World Trade Centers in New York. I tried because freedom to worship at the church of our choice is for the lack of a better term, sacred.
I'm weighing in on the subject today because I'm sitting at my desk working on the charity I founded in October, 2001 - a little more than a month after that horrible morning everyone knows as 9-11.
I worked a night shift job at the time. I heard about the first plane crashing on my way home. By the time I got in the door, set my things down, the second plane had crashed. Before I could get my mind around what was really happening, the first tower had fallen. I was making breakfast for my precious pet rabbit, Thumper, at the time. He saved my life and that's a whole other story. But as I was slicing his apple, chopping his sweet potato, and filling his water bottle with fresh water, all of our lives changed forever.
As I imagine you did, I spent the next few days glued to my television and trying to understand why, what, how, had THAT happened to our country and on our land. Thumper stayed right by my side the entire time. He knew something was wrong. He crawled in my lap and looked at me with his huge brown eyes as if to ask for an explanation of what was wrong. He just knew. He would die a little more than a month later on Monday, October 29, 2001.
I founded a charity, "Pennies for Pets" the week he passed away. Every month since, I have collected pennies, kept all of my loose change, etc and donated them to a shelter, a vet, or a person making a positive difference in the lives of animals and their care. I think he would be proud. I still miss him because the heart never forgets.
Two blocks from Ground Zero? I support EVERYONE'S right to worship, but the heart doesn't forget. I don't care who owns the private property where it will be built, I don't care if it will help honor those lost on that day, I don't care if it is meant to promote healing, I DON'T believe you! You know what it is and many of us do too. Stand up people! If we don't stand for something, we will fall for anything! Until next time...Renee'
