The Worlds Problems - by Achilliez_Heel

Conquest

April 4th 2007 17:47
Conquest. Why is there no modern conquest in the world? All through history there were countries and their rulers who had the guts or at least the ambition to control territory beyond their own. But the problem is everyone is so afraid of their own god damn shadow and world opinion is such an important factor in the process of decision making that nothing ever changes anymore. Think about it, when was the last time territory was taken by force and kept, the last time civilians were killed and the world wasn’t outraged? The facts are, things have changed, nations aren’t defeated completely anymore instead, treaties are made and nations survive; where is our Alexander, our Genghis Khan, our Augustus, our Attila, our Charlemagne, our Napoleon. Where are these great leaders, strategists with great ambition, leaders able to raise their countries to power? We need these leaders in order to redraw the world map, this time including single empires spanning half the map. When did the change occur; the change that makes so many hollow alliances and nobody willing to fight to achieve dominance in the world.

Hmmm.... that's a little frightening, really.

You must understand that this is just and observation, not a complaint or expectation. Though military strategy and planning has always been a skill of mine, I am not trying to be a warmonger.

Well, that's a relief. *grins*

Maybe, because I'm American, I'm a little paranoid of concepts of conquest. It's a bit difficult not to feel like a sitting duck in the world right now.

I do like the idea of reshaping the world, although I haven't quite worked out the details of what "a better world" might mean, but whatever it might mean, I'd rather see it obtained through peaceful agreements rather than conquest.

I'm all about the peace, love, and harmony.

I also want peace, even at the cost of human lives. So many more people will be saved if we achieve peace, not to mention the advances we could make if we transferred the defense budget into a new one to find cures for diseases or research space travel. With this new budget we could raise the life expectancy and finally scatter the human race to other planets.

But even though I want these things I still wonder why things have changed. For example the USA, a country that has arguably the best (or at least the strongest) military in the world, when in history has a country like that not tried to acquire more territory? it just strikes me as odd to think things have changed so much since the times of the Greco-Persian wars, it must be that we are in a new age of man kind where everyone, especially the US, just wants to be left alone.

"I also want peace, even at the cost of human lives."

I have trouble digesting that kind of logic. If human lives are the cost, that's not peace. Don't misunderstand, please, I'm not issuing a judgement of right or wrong here... I'm simply stating that my mind cannot wrap around a concept like sacrificing a few for the sake of many in regard to peace... not in issues of society. Technically, or mathematically, I'm sure it would make sense. But for the families of those sacrificed? For the friends and loved ones? I doubt they'd consider the sacrifice a peaceful endeavor.

As a mother? I can understand this sacrifice perfectly in such as I would easily sacrifice myself for the safety or well being of my own children, so I suppose self-sacrifice is something I view differently. But if somebody else tried to sacrifice my few children for the sake of a larger community, I'm sure I'd come out fighting like a lioness in their defense.

As for territory being conquered, I think maybe it's just done in more secretive, discrete ways in today's age. There may not be raging wars for the sake of conquering territory, but how many other countries have been "Americanized" in subtle ways? Or how much influence from other countries has bled into American life? Things seem to be blending more and more. Are we heading for a "melting pot" culture?

I must admit you are pretty good at opening my eyes to other possibilities and I value your opinion. Thank you but I have nothing more to add, you’ve put me at a standstill.

I've enjoyed the discussion. I think there's much in life to be gained when people communicate openly and respectfully about their views. When people discuss from a position of wanting to prove their own point, not much can be gained, but when people are genuinely open to other possibilities, there's so much room for personal growth.... and I'm referring to myself here.

One of my former positions was head of a website designed to spawn intelligent discussion. I called it Real Insight Through Raw Opinion. Through that experience, I was able to unlock a great portion of my own mind... opinions on which I thought I stood rock solid were swayed (for the better) and I was almost conscious of my own personal evolution.

I really do hope you continue to inspire thought on this kind of level. People won't always agree, and unfortunately, people will sometimes forget the whole respect and growth factors, but then there are those who will feel themselves stretch at your prompting and insights.

I'm incapable of thinking with a military mindset. When I was ten, I thought I'd grow up to be president of the United States... and what that meant to me, at age ten, was planting flowers. What a beautiful country it would be if everyone planted flowers. But issues of defense? Economy? Technology? - Nah... that's not me.

One of the first poems I ever remember writing was an anti war poem.

Thank you for engaging with me. I appreciate it.
