Congress Gets Tough
August 2nd 2010 16:46
After the Buffalo crash that killed 50 people, Congress tightens the requirements for pilots.
From the article:
The legislation requires all airline pilots to log at least 1,500 hours of flight time before flying passengers, up from the current 250-hour minimum for newly hired copilots.
(This means that unless one logs in 1500 hours of flight, pilot or copilot, they won't be able to fly passengers!)
The bill also boosts training, mandates the creation of a national database of pilot records and aims to reduce pilot fatigue by directing the FAA to update rules on pilot duty hours.
I believe this is a step in the right direction...unless the airlines find a loophole or a way around this legislation as they usually do. A good indication is if new fees come into play!
