The sport of hockey is a rough sport that can cause alot of people to have concussions. What is a concussion? A concussion is an injury to the brain or spinal cord due to jarring from a blow or fall. Concussions can cause serious problems in the future to the people who are affected by it.
If you think about it, alot of sports, either professional, amatuer, or even for litle kids, have all seen its fair share of concussions. Hockey wether pro or any level under, has concussions occur all the time. If you have been watching or if you follow the NHL the past three years or so, one of the biggest issues and topics talked about was the fact that more and more players were leaving the game and missing most of the seasons with concussions or even concussion like symptoms.
Every year the NHL holds a huge game known as the "Winter Classic". The game usually is taken place on or a day or two after new years day. Last year the Pittsburgh Penguins faced off with the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA. The focus on this game was the show down between superstars Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and Sidney Crosby of the home town Pittsburgh Penguins. During the second period of this game, Sidney Crosby was hit hard by David Steckel of the Washington Capitals. Crosby went to the bench and had to leave the game. From the focus being on both superstars to now on if Sidney Crosby has a concussion or not.
Concussions occur in hockey all the times and actions and steps are being taken to prevent and eliminate all of these from occuring, weather its the new helmets or even the new rules the leagues have taken into action, concussions are a serious injury and can even cause life threatening problems later on in life.
