Conclusion of flooring for wood stove

January 5th 2012 08:55
Hello how has everybody been, ready for Christmas I hope.
Today we will finish the tile under our stove. When you have found the spot for your stove, before starting your install you need to make sure it will hold the weight of your stove.
Wood or coal stove stoves are usually made of cast so they do tend to have some beef to them.
If your floor is a little weak or your in question about the strength, its a simple fix, just attach a few cross braces between the floor joist or if you really dont want to worry about it you can pour a pad and set blocks under the area.
Okay lets assume the floor is sound and we are ready to start. Take up any carpet or wood flooring in the area you plan on laying your tile. You will then purchase whats called Durok concrete backer board, this is cheap and easy to cut. I purchased all of my supplies at Menards, get enough to cover the entire area .
While at Menards or your local home improvement store you might as well get some screws , they make screws specifically for the backer board and as I said it is easy to cut , I used a jigsaw.
The backer board is down and you have your tile mud mixed up, using your grooved trowel spread it on the backer board leaving lines, not thick. Making sure you know where you want the tile to come out square , start laying them in . You should have bought tile spacers when you were out sorry but I will make you out a shopping list at the end of the post.

The size of the spacers is up to you but remember these spacers dictate how wide your grout lines will be. Leave this to set up a day or two per manufacturers guidelines, when it is set-up mix your grout and use what is called a float to apply it being very generous to fill in completely. Then with a damp sponge you will want to start wiping off all excess until you get the look you want, do not wait for the grout to dry before starting this step.Dont worry its kind of hard to mess this part up. Then let this set-up to dry, next you want a sealer for your grout lines so they dont get all stained.
When you purchase your sealer becareful to get one that will not bleach out colored grout if thats what you used, I learned this the hard way.
Okay a recap of needed supplies:
Durok Concrete Backer Board
Backer Board Screws
Jigsaw
Tile
Tile Cutter
Float
Trowel with Grooved Edge
Tile Mud
Grout
Sponge
Grout Sealer
Okay your off good luck and let me know how it turns out,our next post will cover lighting and heat control of your coal stove . Thanks Again and have a great day!
