Compass Bowl Preview
January 6th 2012 03:10
On Saturday, before the wildcard playoffs begin there is another bowl game. The Compass Bowl, which pits Southern Methodist against Pittsburgh.
The Mustangs of Southern Methodist come into the game at a 7-5 record, while Pittsburgh out of the Big East, are 6-6. Defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will fill in as the head coach just for this game for Pitt, as former head coach Todd Graham left for Arizona State after just one season. SMU coach June Jones was rumored to be in line for the Arizona State job, instead was turned over at the last moment.
Neither team really overwhelms you on offense or defense. SMU has the better offense of the two teams with JJ McDermott as the quarterback. McDermott has passed for 3,182, 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. The Mustangs have a solid running back in Zach Line who has rushed 1,224 yards and 17 touchdowns, who is out with an injury. Two freshman will try and fill his void. Darius Johnson and Cole Beasley, each are nearing 1,000 yards receiving on the year.
Pitt quarterback Tin o Sunseri is effective though doesn't do anything too special. He has passed for 2,433 yards and ten touchdowns on the season. Starting running back Ray Graham is out with an injury leaving backup Zach Brown as the go-to guy on the ground. The Panthers use a strong defense and a running game to win, giving Brown added pressure.
This game is a hard one to pick, both teams have been riddled with key injuries. SMU should be able to move the ball through the air, while Pitt will struggle with this. If the Panthers can run the ball effectively then they have a shot. Am thinking the Mustangs pull this out.
