Colourful Blogs
September 12th 2006 07:27
Hi Everyone,
Hot from the finger-tips of Jay the super programmer!
You can now select the colour of the ads to be shown on your blog. Using a colour which blends in with the rest of your blog can increase your ad clicks by up to 200% so it's well worth doing. Plus it just looks nicer! For those of you who already knew this and were sticking with white layouts as a result, you can now choose from many different colours.
To change the colour of your ads either choose a preconfigured Theme (from my.orble.com click on the "Theme" link) which already has the colour of the ads configured to blend in, or you can go to the Advanced Settings and choose your ad colours manually. If there are any colours you want that are not on the list let me know and I will add them.
If you were quick off the mark and have chosen a new Theme within the last two weeks you will have to login to my.orble.com and "re-choose" it to take advantage of the new ad colours. The changes will not be made automatically.
Coming soon are background images and the return of the rounded corners so keep an eye out.
If you have any problems, questions, or suggestions post a comment!
Thanks all,
Jon.

Depends what you mean by best. I think it is mainly down to personal preference.
In terms of reader perceptions of credibility, a very important factor is having a nice title image which blends into the background like Jokes or OnlineGames. Another important factor is having the ads the same colour as the rest of the blog. The other main factor is of course the quality of the writing.
If a reader perceives a website/blog as more credible it does increase ad click through quite a bit as well as encourage those readers back for more.
Also some themes do seem to do a little better than others (in terms of ad click through). We are still experimenting with this and will let everyone know the results when they are in.

The perspective I'm coming from is that I'm assuming the default theme will essentially be the end user's default browser setting.
I was always told that the Keep it Simple Sweetheart principle should be the basis of web design. One doesn't entirely know what systems, browsers, monitors, monitor setting the end user will use -- so, by setting one's design to default, one ensures readability.
Is there any sense to this?

Good question.
The default Orble blog layout is just our default, not anyone elses, so it will not display any better on a simple browser than any of the other Themes. Or rather I should say that they will all display equally well
You can go crazy in terms of what the blog settings will allow and they should all look fine on all browsers and monitors. If they don't let me know.

Thanks for this...I'm not very computer oriented, and I'm new to this writing blog environment, so your post helps...
