How Hard Is It To Get A Decent Coffee?

October 6th 2006 23:34
And maybe even hot toast?

I don’t know if I should be bringing down café names here because of 1) slander laws and 2) well as furious as I am, I honestly may not be justified…entirely!
But let me repeat I am furious!

Ok venting done now I can continue.
There is ONE thing, one ESSENTIAL thing a café HAS to get right.
COFFEE.
And you know being able to get hot toast wouldn’t hurt them either BUT to have good coffee is an absolute MUST.

It shouldn’t matter how you have your coffee; weak, strong, black, white, latte, flat, soy, whatever….the base is always the same…you are always going to get that all important shot of coffee.

Your long black is a shot and a half with the crema on top, NO dirty water, a weak coffee with be packed looser, strong; packed tighter, it should never – I repeat NEVER have that dirty water that is the post coffee water – or rather a repeat filtration…this is what I got today.

A good coffee should taste rich and creamy – regardless of the milk content. And you know this can really make your day (well in my little world it does).

Sure the smoothness and bitterness will vary with the brand and bean varieties, but coffee can always be good and should always be palatable. This is where the barista comes in.

Any brand or bean will taste bad if it’s;
Burnt
Too bitter (a result of the burning bit)
Or the dirty water (repeat filtration)

So back to by crappy coffee – it was watery, ultra bitter and even tasted grainy…I sent it back. I think you owe it to a barista to send it back and any self respecting barista will take note and be concerned about this – therefore do better next time.

And sure I may be sipping tea rigjht now, but I wasn’t willing to wager another bad cup – BUT I will be back, only because the service was so good….but if this happens again….well let’s just say, there won’t be another next time!

Now I know I have talked my coffee knowledge up – and as a drinker of coffee my knowledge is high – I drink a lot, BUT I am no barista. I have seen the experts at work and if you are interested in not only getting good coffee but making good coffee, then check out these sites:

Great post about coffee! It truly reminds me of the days I can't live without at least a cuppa.

Now, because of doctor's advice, I have manage to go through a day with or without coffee. Does look like an addict's release... isn't it? LOL...

Keep up the good work!

I am getting wirse with my coffee addictions you know..now I am upping the anti and have increased my coffee intake so as to keeep thinking and be fuelled throughout the day....that is not good...I even know how each barista works so that I can get the best coffee for me from them.

For exaample, one guy males it weak so I get a double, one is bitter, so i say I don't like it too hot, and one is juuust perfect, I just ask for a skim FW and that's what i get.

It's dicey and it can make or break you ...but i am becomeing more of an addict everyday - I'll see if I can go trough next monday without one...we'll see

Hi Vixster

I love coffee too, life is too short to do without it. I reckon McDonalds do the weakest, crappiest coffee...no wonder its cheap and mass produced...but cafes in Newtown and Glebe generally do great coffees,
