Coal is Cleaning up its Act
November 28th 2006 02:19
The BBC reports that despite being widely available and steady in price, coal has been pushed to one side in the global energy market because of it's poor environmental reputation. However, with the introduction of "clean coal technology (CCT)" the fossil fuel may be back on the agenda.
It appears that global burning of coal is set to increase each year until 2030 especially in China, so surely CCT can only be a good thing?

"Clean coal is the name attributed to coal chemically washed of minerals and impurities, sometimes gasified, burned and the resulting flue gases treated with steam, with the purpose of almost completely eradicating sulphur dioxide and reburned so as to make the carbon dioxide in the flue gas economically recoverable. The carbon dioxide can then be captured and stored instead of being released into the atmosphere."
