Hey guys, and thanks so much for visiting while I haven't been posting. My stats are down, but still impressive for how long it's been since I posted!
I have been busy with wedding planning and my new blog, Burning the Scale, which I have been working on all month and will hopefully be launched tomorrow. Check it out!
I noticed a recent comment on my low carb diet. Fortunately I have had no further plans to switch, and I love it. I have upped my carbs somewhat (about 34-40/day) which is helping me get more variety. So don't think I fell off the wagon However, I applaud anyone for doing any kind of diet that works for them - low fat or otherwise!
I may not update this blog as much, since I want to keep the freshest content for my new one. But please, visit me over there and give me your support

Any thoughts of South Beach were quickly put to rest after reading this month's issue of "Fitness" (for women). It's clear that a low-fat lifestyle is at least as sad as it sounds. The magazine is full of kicky "You Can Do It!" articles about how to lift 3 pound weights to "tone without bulk" and how strawberries make a great dessert. The ads are for things like pretzels, mini bagels, and low-fat cheese with women dutifully, but cheerfully, eating their "yummy" food. Or my personal favorite = an ad for Weight Watchers sugar-free sherbet bars with the slogan "Sensible Tastiness"! You know something is trying hard to be "tasty" with a tagline like that!
I like the fitness models they use, but I can guarantee you they didn't get their muscular physique by lifting 3- or 5-pound weights. At least it's a step up from their previous models, who I thought looked undernourished - more like fashion models than fitness models.
In short, I had almost resigned myself to a low-fat lifestyle (for quicker weight loss) until reading this magazine. I realized I would never be able to live this way long-term - and your way of eating should be something you enjoy. I'm not knocking low-fat for others - if it works for you, that's great. It certainly did work for the Biggest Losers of previous seasons - and countless others.
The bottom line is that you have to find something that works for you for the rest of your life. You can't expect to follow a diet plan until you lose weight, then go back to your old way of eating. This is the mistake that 95 percent of dieters make, which ensures that they won't keep the weight off.
So what works the best for you? Please let me know in the comments

Is Life Better On The Beach?

May 5th 2007 00:44
Hey guys. Sorry I have been absent lately - I've been working on the new blog, and sleeping a lot. The antibiotics have kicked in though, and my back is feeling a lot better.
I've stalled somewhat in my weight loss on low carb - and have occasionally indulged in high-carb treats (the most recent being mini Cinnabons). Some people find that this jump starts their weight loss, but I think that adding some healthy carbs might help with the cravings. I've got four months to lose 15 more pounds - my doctor has told me not to go too crazy, but I'd really like to make it to my goal weight in time for the wedding. This doesn't especially seem like a tall order, but it does to me when I'm only losing a few pounds per month.
So, I'm wondering if the grass is greener - or the sand is softer - on South Beach. I ordered the book, which should be coming pretty soon. On the low carb board I post on , there is a section for South Beach, and since the first phase is low carb, I shouldn't (or I hope I shouldn't) have any problems. I hope I can incorporate more healthy carbs in later phases, and have more vegetarian options (Atkins is heavy on meat).
Has anyone tried South Beach, and what were your results? Let me know in the comments

Low Carb Deep Dish Pizza Recipe

April 27th 2007 19:58
This is a great pizza recipe that I found on the Low Carb Friends recipe room. This was actually one of the first low carb recipes that I made (and trust me, you can't tell the difference!). It takes a little while, but it's seriously the best pizza ever. Much thanks to Linda on the recipe room for this.

Note - This recipe is high in fat, but has only 3 carbs per serving. As long as you consume fat in the absence of carbs, you won't get the negative effects

I recently was reading a Fitness magazine and came across some weight loss tips. Various things like drinking water, getting enough sleep, exercising, etc all seemed like no-brainers to me. However, one of their "tips" was that if you aren''t losing weight like you'd like to, always, always lower your calories.
What many dieters don't know is that keeping calories too low can be a cause of stalls. Your body will begin to adapt to a mode of starvation and lowering your calories can make it worse. Typically, calories should be no lower than 1200 - and that's the absolute minimum.
I recently bumped my calories to 2000 a day. Granted, it is easier to do this with low carb, but it broke a plateau I was having with my weight loss. I had been eating less than 1200 calories and was wondering why I wasn't losing - despite what I know to be true about weight loss

Spring/Summer Fashion

April 22nd 2007 16:39
I thought I would first give you an update on my weight lost with low carb. So far it's 14 pounds, 4 inches off my waist, 2 off my stomach and another 2.5 off my hips (those are the only measurements I do). Seeing as it's getting warmer and I was feeling more confident about my weight, I thought I would do some shopping for summer.
I first stopped in Old Navy. I think their clothes are sturdy, wearable and not too skimpy. I tried on a host of things - thankfully, everything in a 4 - and ended up buying some shorts that met my criteria (a decent length so people can't see my underwear!).
I noticed a lot of poofy, flowy tops there that I didn't buy - but apparently this is the fashion for spring. I saw even more when I went into my favorite juniors' clothing store, Wet Seal - and bought a couple without trying them on. Big mistake! I got them home, confidently took the tags off, and THEN tried them on. The worst was a peasant top with itsy-bitsy sleeves. When I put it on, the top was straining at the shoulders, I couldn't see where my boobs were even supposed to go, and my arms hurt because the sleeves were pinching at them

The Size Zero Pill

April 21st 2007 20:58
I was reading one of my many beauty magazines over the weekend when I came across an ad for a diet pill called the "Size Zero Pill." I tore out the page to blog about it, but ended up losing the web address. When I Googled "Size Zero Pill" I came up with tons of hits - but not for an actual over-the-counter diet pill. Instead they were for the Hollywood drug Clenbutrol.
Clenbutrol is also being called the Size Zero Pill, I suppose because all of Hollywood's women are taking it and it is clear that they are getting results. Clenbutrol was originally an asthma pill for horses (Ha!) and seems to have some troubling side effects. One of them that you'd think people would pay attention to is the chance that weight would rebound, which could lead to quick weight gain without changing any habits.
It seems to work by raising your basal body temperature, speeding up your heart rate, etc. I guess some people don't feel like losing weight the old-fashioned way and just want quick results (you can lose 6 or more a week

Katy,
I agree - exercise is a huge factor.
What you're talking about is a trick that's been used by quite a few people to keep their bodies from adapting to low calorie. I've done this myself and if it works for you, that's great!
Keep posting

Tammy,
I completely agree. You have seen it firsthand with your daughter. Hopefully she is smart and knows that turning to an eating disorder is not worth it. Unfortunately it took me many years to figure that out.
Thanks for commenting!

on The Diet Myth That Could Be Ruining Your Health

April 1st 2007 18:41
John -
Strangely enough, this book was recently mentioned on one of my favorite blogs, Livin' La Vida Low Carb.
I completely agree with this article and applaud you for posting it. I recently saw a show on TV about a dietician intervening into people's lives and helping them make "better choices." One woman was so excited about being able to eat grains (the dietician had told her they were "necessary") that she went to the grocery store and loaded up her cart with bagels, pitas, bread, you name it! What's more ridiculous, she was supposed to stick to a low-fat diet!
When are America's doctors, dieticians, hospitals, etc going to learn that Americans are just getting fatter and sicker on the low-fat, high-carb diets they prescribe? No wonder no one can stick to a diet - the majority of them being like this!
I'm continuing to do low-carb and I feel great. I've lost a good amount of weight, I have more energy, and I'm even having success adding a few more carbs in.
Again, thanks for the great post.

Thanks for the link.
I believe some may be sensitive to sweeteners. However I gave up all sweeteners for over a month and didn't lose an ounce, didn't feel better or notice any difference.
I don't believe I am sensitive to them.

on Atkins Maybe,Fagan Yes

March 13th 2007 18:40
Thanks John, for this post.
I am not totally schooled in the diet you speak of, but remember that, as human nature goes, just as many people could fall off this diet as well. Fact is, even if you call it a way of eating or lifestyle plan, our nature is to screw up.
I agree that some people are addicted to carbs and must avoid them like alcohol or other substances. Some will be successful, some won't - that is up to them and not the fault of the diet, which is quite satisfying.
I might mention that in the maintenance phase of Atkins, a higher number of carbs can be eaten - I guess I can't specify numbers, but if you read the book he mentions up to 100. This includes wild rice, wheat bread, etc - what you have mentioned.
Again - thanks for today's post - and keep up the good work!
