'Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards' Soren Kierkegaard

Who Am I
Animal - to some I'm scarier than a tiger on steroids because I'm stubborn, opinionated, intelligent and assertive.
Vegetable - apparently I'm socially very stupid, always the last one to get the joke (unless it's about me - I catch on pretty quickly to those ones)
Mineral - my friends say I'm worth my weight in gold (which, according to my scales, would make me richer than Oprah), I'm loyal, supportive and a good listener.

I didn't buy the bike!

March 19th 2007 10:07
Hmmm, how slack have I been?

It's been a while since my last Orble post (at least three months)! No, I wasn't abducted by aliens or hired by the FBI. In fact nothing out of the ordinary has happened other than life! Motherhood, study, work, partner - so many committments and so little time.

Anyway, some of you may remember my post last year about buying my son a bike, 'How do you teach a child to ride a bike?' If you need to refresh your memory click on the link (and maybe ignore all the comments - there were a few there).

Jack's birthday came and went with no bike.

I was still researching protective equipment.

Seriously.

Christmas came quickly around the corner and along with it, a scooter!

Jack loves it and looks super trendy (??) with his helmet, knee guards and elbow pads.

I wasn't too sure whether he'd need a cup or not.

We all love the scooter. Hubby loves it because he can keep up, Jack loves it because he can 'ride' it without any help. And me? Well, I love it because it's a shorter fall to the ground!

We've postponed the bike till his birthday this year (after he's mastered the scooter)....maybe!

Jack loves to draw. Or scribble, depending on your interpretation of his artistic abilities.

At nearly six (two more sleeps!) he prefers to play with a ream of paper and an assortment of textas as opposed to the latest Spiderman toy.

Sometimes I wish he would play with action figurines, I always wanted to be Batman. Or Batman’s girlfriend.

We usually go through about a ream of A4 paper in our house each week. That’s 500 sheets of paper each week or 71 pieces per day.

Crayola markers

No wonder Officeworks is still in business.

Yes, we use recycled paper and many times I’ll take cast offs from work home for Jack to work his magic with.

Am I painting the image that Jack is fascinated with drawing and writing?

Good.

Last week, as a house warming present to ourselves, MM and myself purchased a beautiful 8 seater dining room table stained in a cherry finish. It takes pride of place in the sunroom/dining room of our new abode.

We also have a small country style four seater round table that sits in the kitchen and is used as a breakfast table.

We explained to Jack that the new table was for eating only, no playing with cars on it and definitely no drawing on it. However, we informed him he was still allowed to draw on the kitchen table.

He took us literally. I should have said you can draw on paper at the kitchen table.

We woke up the next morning to an array of colours slashed all over the kitchen table. There were words, pictures of me and trees and other illegible scratchings.

The whole table reminded me of that scene in Stigmata where the walls are covered in furious writing.

Naturally, I took a few photos had a chuckle then tried to clean it all up.

I also made a mental note to be a little more specific in the future.

Give Your Kid a Scotch

October 24th 2006 20:43
'Give your kid a scotch and help prevent under age drinking' is the message being touted by some parents.

The legal age for consumption of alcohol in Australia is 18

Kids Clothing Too Sexy?

October 10th 2006 12:53
A new report by the Australian Institute has raised the hackles of some major department stores.

The report claims that children (particularly young girls) used in catalogues to promote clothing are being portrayed in a sexually suggestive manner

Hiring a Bookkeeper

October 2nd 2006 13:15
Doing the accounts for your small business can be a tedious and time consuming task. After a hard day at work the last thing you want to be worried about is writing out cheques or doing a BAS statement.

This is where a mobile bookkeeper can be of benefit to you and your business.

Children & Obesity

October 2nd 2006 11:50
According to a fact sheet from the NSW Department of Health in 1995 the proportion of obese children between the ages of 2 to 17 was 21% for boys and 23% for girls.

This percentage has been increasing each year, with the government stepping in and developing ‘management’ plans. In 2002 a new ‘Healthy School Canteen Strategy’ was developed with many schools developing new canteen menus to do their bit to help the rising obesity rates

In our beautiful state of New South Wales the entire schooling population is taking a two week hiatus from arithmetic, Shakespeare and catch and kiss. School holidays are here again and along with them, greying mum’s who are counting down the days until school resumes.

I love having Jack at home during the holidays but I find that I need to have a number of activities organized to keep myself sane and the little tucker exhausted, I mean happy

The Balancing Act

September 29th 2006 11:48
Owning your own small business is hard work. It takes time, dedication and occasionally some ruthlessness to make it a success. But as you often hear people say – there is more to life than work, and this stands true for running your own small business.

People devote a lot of time into establishing their dream. They eat, sleep and breath every aspect of getting the business off the ground and helping it maintain flight. Often times, this is to the detriment of their personal lives, be it social or family

Out of the Mouths of Babes

September 29th 2006 06:46
These come from an e-mail I received yesterday. Absolutely hilarious and I would be so embarrassed if it happened to me!

While in line at the bank one afternoon, my toddler decided to release some pent-up energy and ran amok. I was finally able to grab hold of her after receiving looks of disgust and annoyance from other patrons.

Hi Adrian

I was kidnapped and held for ransom. Nobody wanted to pay the $5 to get me back and eventually I was released because they felt sorry for me.

Ha.

Life's been busy, very busy. Am contemplating whether or not to continue with the site.

Nice pic at the party too.......LAD is a gem.

Hi MelissaA

No I missed that Sunrise episode. I know there was a party near where I lived about a year ago that was a normal 16th birthday party. It ended up with over 450 teenagers there, plastered and hurling abuse at neighbours and attending police officers.

Glad I locked my car up that night!

I think that education, or lack there of, is a major factor in alcohol abuse. Kids seeing their parents having a few drinks with friends and getting 'happy' would not make them realise or understand the side affects.

I've witnessed a number of times at friend's bbq's etc, where mum or dad has put a beer bottle or wine to their babies mouth and allowed them a sip, thinking it funny.

Personally, I didn't find it at all amusing.

Thanks for dropping by.

Hi Spain01

I would think that as adult clothing has become less conservative so too has children's clothing.

Selling bra and undies sets for young girls has been around for a while but the number of stores stocking these products has increased.

I think with the increasing panic over pedophiles/child pornography there's been higher awareness and attention drawn to the clothing of young children.

Thanks for your comment.

Hi Kate

I'll definately be stopping by your blog on a regular basis!

Things are still very new with Jack at the moment so we are in the 'information gaining' stage.

He is a cute boy - takes after his mum!

I look forward to reading more of your posts and hopefully corresponding with you.

Take care

Hi Chantal

Healthy canteens are fantastic......back in my high school days (all those long long years ago) we could purchase pies, sausage rolls, chips, softdrink, lollies, icecreams...

Come to think of it, the food on offer resembled the products of a mini mart. No wonder their profits were huge.

Having done my stint as a volunteer mum in the canteen, I noticed that it takes a lot more effort to prepare the healthier meals - but the effort is definately worth it.

Hi Candice

Thanks for your comment!

The thing I don't understand with parents continually feeding babies junk is why? The babies wouldn't know whether or not they're slurping down yoghurt or eating a cupcake.

Is it lack of time to prepare nutritious snacks or meals? Does convenience play a part?

My son is allowed the occassional treat but it's definately not a part of his daily lifestyle. All I have to do is think of how much the junk will clog his tiny arteries and I reach for an apple instead!

Hi Joy

Thanks for stopping by.

When I visit shopping centres I often see young girls out and think 'If that were my daughter, there's no way I'd let her leave home dressed like that!'

Of course, she's not my daughter and it's not up to me what she wears. Still.......

I'm not sure why parents put their little girls in bikini's - I'd assume it would be the same to wash them as it would a one-piece. Maybe because it's cooler?

Hi Ahmed

There are a growing number of underaged teens walking the catwalks these days!

I have to say though, that in the major department store catalogues I've viewed they've stuck to using age appropriate models for promotion.

As children get older I think (lack of) respect for themselves and peer pressure does cause a lot of anxiety in the dress stakes.

Went the bikini was bought in their was an outrage - and things have got a lot skimpier since then!
