To Diesel or not to Diesel...that is the question?
January 15th 2007 22:29
I think the time has come for me to embrace the latest trend in automobiles.....the diesel vehicle.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not after a 4wd......but another small car to replace my ageing Proton Satria (7.5 years old and counting).
Perhaps its the frustration with continually high petrol prices.....(and Caltex/BP/Woolies....dont try and tell me you're making hardly any profit....because the ACCC is on to you....) or just the desire to do something different..
but damn it...I want a diesel....!
I like the VW Golf 2.0 TDI.....and I hear there's a new 1 series BMW (all I can afford from their range) with a diesel engine.....but here's the BIG question....is a diesel car really more economical?
Let's weigh it up.
PROS
- drive further on the same size tank as a petrol engine so fewer stops at the servo
- ability to use bio-diesel fuel (10% methanol/vegetable oil blend)
CONS
- diesel cars cost more up front (I'm talking $2500 as a starting figure)
- diesel fuel costs more at the bowser (somewhere between 5 and 20 cents a litre more than petrol)
- diesel smells when you get it on your hands (so wear gloves when filling up!)
Now, if you manage to find someone who'll sell you bio-diesel fuel or you're one of those types who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and mixing your own at home......well OK thats a huge cost saving and if I had a supply of bio-diesel at my fingertips than I'd be first in line at the VW dealership tomorrow.....
but the fact is...backyard dealers of bio-diesel are hard to come by......and thanks to the fuel tax most states levy on us.....even if they brought it to a servo near you...it'd cost the same as regular fuels......
So, what's my decision?
Its all too hard....I think I'll just stick with my petrol Proton for now....though that little Golf looks pretty sexy........hmmmmmmm

How do I shift my most recent post to become my second post under my original blog? Somehow I ended up starting a new blog called the same name and placing my new post there...instead of under the other one...?
Help?
