Jessica Watson arrives back home

May 18th 2010 01:02
Last Saturday we were on Sydney Harbour to watch Jessica Watson arrive home...

But 1st we had to do some maintenance. We went down to the RSYS on Friday morning and picked Y88 "Fast Forward" from her mooring and brought her into the pond off the club. Winches were greased, impellers were cleaned, decks were scrubbed, top sides were washed down and polished, the usual routine. What a beautiful morning's work. Sun beaming down, warm, mucking around with boats. Perfect. Then off to for pizza and a wine or two. On the way back from lunch and off to the bank I was called to by a couple of old sailing buddies who were sitting in the sun outside of another pizza restaurant drinking Lemoncellos. It would have been rude to not join them so I did. More drinks in the sun. A good nights sleep Friday for sure.

Then Saturday, Jessica's return. After a race of course.

There was quite a bit of confusion as you would expect. With the prevailing wind our start would have taken us across the flotilla escorting Jessica up the main harbour. Not very good. In fact a very scary concept.

The girl was running later than her advertised ETA so the race director in his infinite wisdom decided to start the race and set a short course. Good thinking.

An exciting race. SW 15 odd knots so we were flying. The little 29 footer was clocking 9 knots under a shy kite. We liked that. A lot. Great fun. So much fun that we ended up 1st across the line thrashing the next boats a 35 footer and a 34 footer.

After we finished we dropped sails and as we could see helicopters flying over the headland a couple of miles away we started the engine and motored up to meet Jessica and her welcoming flotilla.

It was huge. The entire width of the harbour was filled with a wall of boats that was four times as deep again. We managed to sneak our way through, turned about and followed them in.

What a wonderful enthralling sight. A welcoming friendly escort for a deserving little Champ. Mind you you couldn't see Jessica through the fleet as her tiny little boat was dwarfed by the charter boats, the police boats, the fire boat and many and assorted power boats and yachts. I think we were the smallest boat there after her little pink baby.

A great event. I makes an old bloke like me feel very proud.

Cheers

chris

Winter race 1

May 6th 2010 00:47
Kupu Gila - boat I used to race

It's race time again! The 1st Winter race out of the Royal Sydney Yacht squadron was last weekend. We were entered in Division Two. Bit things didn't go as well as you would like... So.....

The race we had when we didn't have a race....

Ya gotta love winter.

Either a mini hurricane and you want to stay in bed or no wind at all so you wish you had of.

Like last Saturday.

Nuffin on the clock.

Off we go for a 12.05 start at Athol Bight.

Still nuffin.

So we all bob up and down, talk and think about drinking the beer.

Time goes on.

Still no start.

We take a look a bit out in the main harbour as we spotted a Flying Tiger with its kite filling. Just.

By the time we got there what breeze there was was gone.

Slowly back to the start line.

Time goes on.

Then a hooter!

Hooray. A start.

Delayed by an hour and 10 minutes but at least a start.

At a magnificent 1/2 of a knot we head off.

Roman and I decide he can handle the main by himself in these trying conditions so I went down to the leeward side to tilt the boat and watch the headie.

And have a kip.

An hour goes by.

We spot the 1st mark.

It's off Kirribilli.

Amazingly people put kites up.

We're asleep so we don't bother.

They don't pass us anyway.

Excitement!

A used condom floats past the boat.

It was the young lady crew member who spotted it and drew it to our attention.

"Look a big condom!"

"No it's not, it's small one."

Thanks for that I thought.

Your sense of humour changes when things are quiet.

We drift past the lighthouse on the point.

I never noticed before but there are some beautiful rock formations there.

Probably never had time for such introspection before either.

There are three hooters in the background. They have called off the Etchells. It might have applied to us as well but who knows?

No one's doing anything really. Kites up or down, headie poled out or not, it doesn't make any difference.

Some boats use boat hooks to pole out the headie. Very naughty but who cares anyway.

Just before the 1st mark they put a drifting runabout to mark it as a finish line.

As we come up to the line we drop the headie and push up through it.

It changed nothing.

The finish boat asked if we were still racing as we were bare headed. "Yup" I yelled.

So there we have it.

One leg.

2 hours, 2 kilometres.

Oh, the excitement.

What you have when you are not having a race.

Cheers

Grand Prix

March 17th 2010 00:39
So we finally had a GP last weekend. I gave it "Bs" all round. B for the most boring race you'd ever want to see. Is it really possible any one watched it to the end? Bernie didn't trouble himself. He left early. Again. If you'd have helped put on a show like that you'd want to get out of town quick too. Before the punters come looking for you to deservedly get their money back. No chance of that is there? "B" for the most boring track conceived. Why don't they look at tracks that are welcomed by the teams and spectators whether live or on TV to see what works? Another conundrum. "B" for the environment. Dull, dull, dull. Wide open spaces with a bit of road wiggling around. The run off areas would do for the Space Shuttle. There can be no sense of speed without some form of relationship to the locality. When the track is surrounded by miles of useless flat areas you can not perceive of what the cars are doing. You may hate Monaco, personally I love it, but the sight of the cars that close to the fences really brings it home as to how good they are. "B" for the boring architecture. Ho hum. Why bother when the stands are going to be empty anyway. Who cares. Let the sport die. So there you go people. "Bs" all round. Let's hope that Australia is better. At least good enough for us to watch the entire race.

As a foot note. If you watched the NASCAR the preceding weekend, the IRL and V8s race the same weekend you'd have seen some terrific motor racing. That's how it should be done

OK, it's time to have a look at the Oscar nominees.

As an avid (No pun intended on certain editing machines. I use FCP) movie goer and some times worker in the Industry as a TVC director/producer I like to look at what the academy has put forward
