Honda Civic Type R

April 4th 2007 10:18
The all-new Civic Type R comes equipped with a high-performance 2.0-litre non-turbo 4-cylinder engine matched to a 6-speed manual transmission. A lighter, more rigid bodyshell, specially tuned suspension, 18-inch tyres and large 17-inch front disc brakes are among the major differences from the standard Civic 2.0 which allow it to push the performance envelope.

The exterior employs a pure sports ‘one-motion form’ design with aerodynamically advanced surface treatment and sharp edges. Newly-developed aerodynamic features include a large air intake in the front bumper and grille, a rear bumper with built-in rear diffuser, a prominent high-mounted rear spoiler, and extended side sill garnishes, giving the car an aggressive overall appearance.

Additionally, there are specifically designed engine bonnet and front fenders, an exclusive shiny black chromed front grille bar, headlight sub-reflector and Civic emblem design and of course, a distinctive ‘Type R’ red Honda emblem front and rear.

The overall black colour scheme chosen gives the interior cockpit a racing car-like appearance. The front bucket seats are specially designed for Type R and feature separate centre/side construction with high side bolsters and optimized cushion rates help hold the body in place during spirited cornering.

The multiplex i-VTEC tachometer has an indicator which alerts the driver that engine speed is approaching maximum rpm. Self-illuminated, lit with red-coloured flashing lights are strategically located for minimum eye movement in circuit and other high speed driving conditions.

Other performance-oriented features include a small-diameter, genuine leather oval steering wheel, an aluminium ball-type shift knob, a short stroke sports shift linkage, metal sports-type pedals and footrest, and a separate, button-type engine starter.

A higher compression ratio and improved breathing efficiency help the naturally-aspirated K20A engine develop a maximum output of 165kW (225 ps) at 8000 rpm and maximum torque of 215 Nm at 6100 rpm.

The Drive-By-Wire (DBW) technology provides for finer tuning of throttle response and power output. Optimum tuning of intake and exhaust manifolds provides for high output at high engine speed while also improving torque characteristics over a broad engine speed range.

A close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission is standard and has optimized gear ratios for superior accelerations at high speeds, providing exhilarating performance. New features include a highly rigid aluminium transmission case while the addition of a baffle plate helps mitigate oil starvation at high cornering speeds. A short stroke shift linkage contributes to a sporty shifting feel.

The highly rigid Civic body and its advanced layout serves as the basis for an even more highly rigid, yet lightweight Type R body. Measures to enhance body rigidity while reducing weight have translated into a body that is 50% more rigid than in the Integra Type R production model sold between 2001 and 2006.

Specially tuned suspension, high performance 18-inch tyres, a torque-sensitive helical LSD, large disc brakes for improved fade resistance and other performance-enhancing features contribute to higher cornering performance and stability for an exciting, racecar-like driving experience. The specially tuned suspension is said to have revised spring and damping rates, and thicker stabilizer bars for improved vehicle stability. Factory fitted tyres are 225/40R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE070s while the disc brakes are 4-pot aluminium Brembos. The ABS/EBD system has been tuned for the higher performance.

Honda’s GCON (G-force Control) technology is incorporated to create a body with a crash safety performance that is claimed to be among the best in the world, withstanding a 55 km/h full-frontal collision, a 64 km/h front offset collision, a 55 km/h side collision, and a 50 km/h rear collision. The vehicle’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body provides a high level of self-protection and also improves compatibility toward other vehicles. It is also designed to help mitigate pedestrian injury in the event of a collision thanks to the use of impact-absorbing structures.

Type R models, which have been available since the early 1990s, are specially tuned versions that extend the performance of the standard model and typically provide a racing car-like driving feel. First offered on the NSX in 1992, the Type R range was extended to the Integra in 1995, and the Civic in 1997. This latest all-new Civic Type R is said to be the distillation of 15 years of technological progress and the latest expression of Honda’s “Challenging Spirit.”

The New Mini Cooper S

March 27th 2007 10:17

The Cooper version continues with the non-turbo EFI 4-cylinder 1.6-litre unit that puts out 120 bhp and generates 160 Nm of torque. Though its description is no different from what you would read in catalogues of most other cars, it does have something extra in the form of BMW’s Valvetronic technology which provides a broader powerband by continuously varying the valve timing to suit driving demands.

The chassis is the same as before so you can also expect that gokart-like handling and agility which was so appreciated in the original Mini as well as the modern Mini. It’s even better now, thanks to the use of lightweight materials and optimisation of the multi-link rear suspension system, a layout which is unique in this segment where the torsion beam is more common.

An electric motor provides power assistance for the rack and pinion steering system and because the amount of assistance can be more precisely programmed, it is possible to provide the driver with much better feel at higher speeds. Depression of a SPORTS button reduces assistance so that there is a firmer character for high-speed driving.

Needless to say, this is not your typical small hatchback as it comes from a manufacturer of premium and luxury products. Thus, features-wise, the Mini is very well equipped, especially with safety equipment. Besides the two front airbags, there are another two more on each side for a total of six; ABS is standard and there’s also Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Additionally, Automatic Stability and Traction Control (ASC T) and Run-flat tyres on the Cooper S help to provide superior driving and tracking stability in extreme situations.

Inside, both the Cooper and Cooper S (the only two versions available for now) are fitted with exclusive materials to match its classy exterior. High-quality textile materials and surfaces give the interior special harmony and balance. The seat upholstery is available in ‘Ray’ cloth and leather combination for the Cooper while the Cooper S has the choice of being dressed in ‘Gravity’ Leather or ‘Punch’ leather.

The slightly more spacious cabin has been fundamentally revised and updated – but without losing that unique character. Most noticeable is the centrally-positioned speedometer – just like the Original – which is now even larger in size and has an enhanced range of functions serving far more purposes and requirements than on the former model.

True to the Mini’s promise of being ‘the most exciting car around’, the model boasts a wide-range of special equipment to fulfil individual wishes and desires. Standard equipment includes xenon headlights (Cooper S), a high-quality audio system (Cooper S), sports suspension (Cooper S), radio boost CD changer and new mood ambient illumination that allows for the interior lighting of the MINI to create five colour settings in the car.

The new Honda CR-V

March 17th 2007 02:35
Nowadays, the trend of SUV moves toward more MPV-like shapes which are also called ‘cross-overs’ by some companies which can’t decided whether their models are SUVs or MPVs or stationwagons. For a long time, market surveys have shown that many customers of small SUVs (and even the larger ones) buy such vehicles for reasons that have little to do with driving off-road. They buy a SUV for its rugged image, utility and also the higher seating position. 4-wheel drive is not necessarily a must either and in some countries, there are actually 2-wheel drive only variants.

The more curvaceous shape, which is 10% more aerodynamic, gives the impression that the new CR-V (by the way, the initials have always stood for Comfortable Runabout Vehicle) is larger than its predecessor, the increase in length is actually about 20 mm and even the wheelbase of 2620 mm has not changed. However, it is wider by 35 mm at 1820 mm and the new frontal presentation emphasises its width too. Again, the floorpan has been lowered, putting the door sills 32 mm lower. The new structure, though having a generous ground clearance of 185 mm, still manages to have a lower centre of gravity, which will benefit handling and stability

Proton Savvy & Waja 2007

January 23rd 2007 05:00

If, when following behind a Proton Savvy, you always had the feeling it was driving towards you, that sort of sensation should no longer occur in coming months. This is because Proton has removed the ‘beak’ which mimicked the front end causing the backside of the car to look like the front. The change is one of a number to be found on the 2007 version of the Savvy which was launched this morning at the Proton head office complex.

BMW 325i Sports Coupe Z4 M

January 22nd 2007 15:11
January 22, 2007 03:05 PM

When BMW Malaysia’s MD, Wolfgang Schlimme, fired up the local subsidiary of BMW AG, one of his promises was to broaden the range offered to Malaysian customers. He could see that BMW had not been selling in the sort of numbers it should have been doing (in terms of official sales, that is) because there were limited choices in the showrooms. Within a short time, he tripled the model offerings and even better, launched brand new models in Malaysia within a very short time after they went on sale in Germany
