Did you know: Snow and Ice is extremely dangerous?!
In the last two weeks there have been several casualties which have fallen second-best to mother nature...
Last week, I was in Estonia and heard that the top news story on Wednesday, the 10th of March was about a young woman who had entered into a coma because of a falling pile of snow from the rooftop above. As she casually walked down the street, she was unaware about the mass of snow above her and then boom!...it was to late.
Another story, also from Estonia, was to do with my classmate. Since the temperature had been over zero for the last couple of days, the snow had all melted and the ice underneath became extremely slippery. A learned colleague of mine slipped on the ice and managed to break her ankle in two places. A major setback to the evolution of her story and a morale drainer for the rest of us.
Meanwhile, back home in Helsinki, rooftops were also piling up with snow. It was reported that many Finns found themselves in hospital due to either snow piles falling on top of them directly or through their own roof collapsing. Usually, business and apartment blocks put out barricades if the snow on their roof is vulnerable to drop ,but their is a select few who are simply too lazy and create a major safety hazard to their fellow compatriots.
However, the media caught on to this trend and warned the locals to get on top of their rooves to clear off the snow - anything that was higher then 80cm. The Finns acted immediately but it was later reported that more casualties ended up in hospital due to them not having harness at all or one which was not tied correctly and actually falling off the roof.
The beauty of a White Winter; you can never win!
P.S. Once again, I didn't realise how long it has been since my last blog. I have so many ideas for new ones but I haven't been able to find the time to write them. I promise a lot more will come soon. Promise!
White Winter?? Watch Where you Walk! The many dangers that lie above cause by sub zero temperatures in the North.
