Swept from the Sea (fiction/romance) - by Kiwi Author

Chapter One Continued

February 14th 2007 07:30
Sarah lost track of the time but she was amazed at how that horse just stood so patiently next to them
‘Hmmm Falte wouldn’t do that, he’d be off galloping all over the show’ she thought to her self.
‘Just stay with us’ she said to the man quietly, scanning the beach for Earl and Becky.
Just then in the distance she saw some headlights coming towards her
and stood up to wave at them. Sarah liked Earl, he lived in the old school building close to where she lived and he was always willing to help.

He was about fifty years of age, spending most of his time painting in

his studio or along deserted beaches but she had noticed when she
had visited his place from time to time, old photos of him in uniform
standing with other soldiers. But as he had never mentioned anything
about his past, she thought it best not to pry.
The vehicle drew along side to where she was standing, pulling to a
halt. Earl and Becky got out, ‘You okay Sarah?’ He asked her.
‘I’m fine Earl, it’s this guy here that I am worried about’ She replied
kneeling down once more.
‘Well I’d be dammed’ He replied kneeling down beside her.
‘He’s alive but his pulse is weak’ Sarah told him quickly.
‘Well let’s not hang around any longer’ Earl replied standing up and
going over to open the rear hatch of the four wheel drive before
saying ‘You and Becky take a hold of a leg each and we’ll put him in
the back.

As they took a hold, struggling with the mans dead weight before
laying him carefully down inside, placing a blanket under his head
and one over him to keep him warm .
‘Becky can you manage your horse and this one while I ride back with Earl to my house’ she asked her friend.

‘No worries Sarah, see you back at yours then’ She replied before

going over to where her mount was
relieved to be untied.
‘Let’s get going then’ Earl said turning the key in the ignition, the
diesel engine clattering nosily to life.

As they drove back along the beach, he asked ‘How did you find him
Sarah, as Becky said he had been washed up or something?’
She proceeded to tell him about how they had seen the water spout
before seeing the wreckage being washed up onto the beach.
‘It was definitely a sailing ship of some kind but where it might have
come from, I wouldn’t like to guess’ she told him.
‘I would like to know where he has come from, for his manner of
clothing isn’t anything I have seen before apart from in the movies
about medieval warfare’ Earl told her.
‘And who does that big horse belong too?’ He asked.
‘I don’t know as we just found it on the beach’ she replied.
Sarah turned to look more closely and realised that he was right, all
of his clothing did look very similar to that kind of thing.

‘Where have you come from?’ She mused to herself.
‘’Are you sure you want to take him back to yours?’ He asked.
‘That will be fine, I have enough room and I can quickly get
the fire going as until we know who he is and where he is from, might
be best not to alert the police’ She told him quickly.
Earl shot her a look, that clearly said he didn’t agree but he said
nothing.
‘Don’t worry Earl, if he isn’t showing signs of improvement in a day
or so, then I’ll call in the authorities and arrange for him to be taken
to the nearest hospital’ she told him reassuringly.
It wasn’t too long before they reached Sarah’s home ‘Just let me
make sure Sasha isn’t running loose’ she said getting out of the
vehicle.

As she opened the gate, Sarah could see Charlie the rabbit still safely
in his enclosure and as she turned the key in the door lock, she
could hear Sasha, scratching on the other side.
As the door opened, out ran a little scruffy black dog, which
proceeded to leap up at her as she entered.
‘Hello Sasha’ Sarah said with a smile, picking up the little dog in her
hands as she went into the big farmhouse kitchen.
‘You are naughty Sasha’ Sarah said in a relaxed manner as she saw
the chewed slippers once again laying across the floor.

Placing the little dog in the lounge and closing the door behind her,
she went back out to help Earl in with their patient.
Without Becky there to help, it was a struggle to lift him but between
them they managed to take him up the stairs and to the guest room.
‘Right let’s get him out of these wet clothes and into something
warmer’ she said undoing the clasp that held his cloak together.
As they both undressed him, it became more aware by his dress that
he was most definitely a stranger to the area, as he didn’t seem to
have a wallet, id or even a watch on him.
They found a little leather bag attached to his belt, which to Sarah’s
surprise held gold and silver coins.

‘Look at this Earl!’ She exclaimed in surprise, tipping them out onto
the palm of her hand.
‘They look like nothing I have seen before, even the designs look
unfamiliar and who carries this sort of money around nowadays?’
He replied curiously as he examined one of the coins in more detail.
‘It’s more this that has got me intrigued’ Sarah said struggling to hold up his sword with both hands.
‘Let me have a look’ Earl asked her.
‘Careful as it’s quite heavy’ she replied passing it over to him.
Earl felt the weight of it in his hands before drawing it out of it’s
Scabbard.

He gave an impressed whistle as he saw the engraved blade. The
sword was a long and needed two hands to wield it comfortably.
But it was the engravings that caught the eye, there was some kind of
writing but they were unable to read what it said.
But it was as they took off his woollen undershirt that Sarah gave a
gasp of shock at what she saw, for even though he was of an
impressive build, it was the large nasty looking scar upon his
broad chest that took her breath away.
That combined with the large scar on his neck and other minor
marks led Earl to remark ‘He’s a soldier of some kind as there is no
other way to get these sort of wounds’ he said bluntly.
‘Are you sure? Sarah asked horrified as just for a moment a dark
cloud passed across Earl’s eyes as if he was remembering something
unpleasant from the past.
