chapter 9: Memories

Jen and Sam are standing outside Country Diner waiting for Dean and Candi. With encouragement from Sam, Jen decides its time to bite the bullet and call her ex. He lives the closest to the last victim’s house. It’s easy to lookup his number. He’s the best resource they have at the moment. She makes the call as Sam watches her facial expressions.

Jen says, “Hi Jack, its Jen. I know it’s been a long time. How are…I’m sorry. Can you meet me at Country Diner 520 East Market Street? Well, I need some help figuring something out and I know how smart you are. Will you come? Thanks, I’ll see you in an hour.”

She puts her arms around Sam. He hugs her tight. She looks up at him. He knows she really doesn’t want to think back to her past. No matter how good it was at one point ugliness snuck in slowly ruining what seemed to be her first road to marriage. He knows all to well how college romances can rip you up in the end and how the end can change your life forever.

With tears in his eyes thinking about Jessica Sam says, “You can talk to this guy. He’s alive. I’ll be with you unless you don’t want me right beside you.”

Jen says, “I do want you beside me. I think we can play this one truthfully. I mean we can tell Jack we’re married and investigating the murders. So, how difficult would it be to make me one of those badges you flash to people?”

Dean and Candi have pulled in across the street. They walk up behind Jen hearing what she just said.

Dean says, “No problem Courtney Grohl. I have that ready for you and one for Joan Jet here too.”

Jen says, “I was going to use my real name.”

Dean says, “I got it covered. Just thought a few extra IDs might come in handy for our sexy Ladies someday. I guess I was right. Let’s go get some food. I’m starving.”

The four of them go back in the diner. Sam catches Dean up on what’s going on leaving out Jen’s premonition of course. Jen and Sam just have a Diet Pepsi. Candi gets a cheeseburger and fries. Dean orders their special Deluxe Beacon burger. Sam watches out the window as he has his arm around Jen. Jen is leaning on him watch for her ex. Jack pulls in in his black 2007 Saturn. He walks into the diner. Jen is still looking out the window, but Sam sees him walk in looking around. Sam looks at Jen, smiles and kisses her. (Cold as Ice by Foriegner plays)

Dean says, “Hey, I’m eating here. No PDA.”

Jen says, “What was that for?”

Sam says, “He’s here.”

Jen looks up. He is definitely there. She gets up and walks towards him. Sam gets up behind her. Jack’s jet black hair is shorter now, but he still looks like Jason Dohring. He smiles at Jen. She thinks that’s a good sign.

Jen says, “Hi Jack. I’m glad you came.”

Jack says, “Yeah, I’m here. Is there something you want to talk to me about?”

Jen says, “Let’s go sit down.”

She grabs his hand and turns around. Sam is right there like a wall. All the expression is drained from his face watching Jen take another man by the hand to lead him. She looks up keeping a smile on her face the best she can.

Jen says, “Sam, I didn’t know you were right behind me. Jack this is my Husband Sam. Let’s go sit at that empty booth to talk.”

They walk to an empty booth. Dean looks up from his meal still stuffing his face. He sees the blank look on his brother’s face. He whispers to Candi.

Dean says, “Should I pull him out of that situation? I wouldn’t want to have to sit watching while you talked with an ex you actually loved.”

Candi says, “Maybe you should.”

Jen and Sam sit together in the booth. Jack sits across from them. Sam holds her hand on the table trying to look as interested as possible. All he really sees is how this man took his wife’s attention if only for a few seconds when she went to meet him. Dean starts to get up from the table looking at Sam. Sam glances at him shaking his head. Jen and Jack don’t even notice the gesture. They are reminiscing about the great college times they had. (‘All the same’ by Sick Puppies plays)

Jack says, “Remember meeting at the Hub? You and your friend took me to The Robinhood. That was awesome music.”

Jen says, “That was a fun night. We just clicked. I loved the movie nights in the Dorm. It was just you and me and a little Corona.”

Sam’s eyes tear up thinking of similar times spent with Jessica. He let’s go of Jen’s hand. Then he gets up to leave them alone awhile. Jen looks at him surprised. She sees the look on his face.

Jen says, “Sam…Jack we’ll be back in a minute.”

Sam heads out the door. Jen follows him. He drops down in front of the car. She comes out the door. Looking at him she kneels beside him putting her hand on his knee.

Jen says, “Are you ok Sam? I’m sorry if Jack and I talking about our past upset you. It wasn’t all that good. I was trying to get him to put his guard down so he might tell us something we don’t know about the murders.”

She sits down beside him. He puts his arm around her.

Sam says, “It’s not your past that upsets me, its mine. I was just thinking about Jess and how we got together in college. Then that wonderful life was taken away from me. Now I have to drink Demon blood just to sustain my strength. But at least I found you.”

Jen says, “Your not going to loose me easily Sam Winchester. The only way I would walk out of your life is if Jessica some how came back. I know you will always love her first.”

Sam says, “Well, I’m glad I have you.”

He caresses her cheek. Then he kisses her.

Jen says, “Are you ready to go back in now? I know it’s hard for you but I need you by my side.”

Sam says, “Yes, I need you too.”

They walk back in the Diner hand in hand smiling. They sit back down with Jack who has ordered a cheeseburger and fries. Jen takes one of his fries and feeds it to Sam. Then she laughs. Dean and Candi look at each other stunned. Dean didn’t think Sam would come back in the Diner at all. (‘Who knew’ by Pink plays)

Jen says, “Jack, did you hear about the murders around here? That’s some crazy slasher movie stuff, isn’t it?”

Jack says, “Yeah, it’s kinda cool. But it has upset me a bit going to all those funerals. I was really depressed until I heard your voice on the phone.”

Sam says, “You knew the girls that were killed?”

Jack says, “Only from concerts I’ve gone too really. I thought I was really getting to know Kelly almost like you Jen. Now she’s dead. I swear everyone I have had sex with dies. Well, almost everyone.”

Sam says, “I know what you mean. I mean, it sounds like it would be a difficult thing to go through.”

Jen says, “Well, um I think we need to get going. We’ll talk more later? Sorry for your losses.”

Sam and Jen get up to leave.

Jack says, “Thanks, if you’re in town for awhile just stop by the house. I’m still living in the same place. And Sam watch out, her eyes wonder. And she’ll drop you when you least expect it.”

Jen says, “But my heart never wonders and I can’t hold on to someone that doesn’t want held.”

Sam ushers her out as she starts to fume about Jack’s comment. Sam walks her down the street to cool off. Dean and Candi walk out minutes later after them. They go to catch up.

Jen says, “You know, he can be such a Dick. I guess I didn’t realize it was my job to hold on to him no matter if he had time to spend with me or not. I mean at least you call when you’re gone for even a week. He always waited for me to call…”

Dean says, “What did you find out?”

Sam says, “He knew the victims. Jen, could he be someone that could do what you saw, um what we saw on the news?”

Jen says, “I don’t know. He loves horror movies and even dressing up as psycho killers for Halloween but he’s just not physically brutal. But he said he knew those women from concerts. We could follow him out tonight to see where he goes. We can catch him in the act and you have my blessing to just kill him Sam.”

Sam says, “That might be fun.”

Dean says, “Woe, let’s see where he goes. Killing him won’t solve anything. Just chill you two.”

Candi says, “I’ll call Abigail to tell her we will not be home tonight and check on the boys.”

Jen says, “Good idea. I’m sure Abigail is fine with them but I would love to hear Bobby say Momma to me to let me know he’s ok.”

Dean says, “Why don’t you girls go get us two motel rooms and call the kids. Sam and I are going to see where Jack ends up going tonight. We’ll call you to meet us at the bar he ends up at. Sam, are you and Jen going to be cool with hanging out with this guy tonight?”

Sam says, “Whatever we have to do to find this murderer before more girls get killed. Jack’s our only lead.”

Jen says, “I’ll just do what I always did when we went out and he pissed me off, Smile and try to keep the conversation light and flirty. And leave him unsatisfied at the end of the night.”

Sam says, “Woe, I guess I’m glad I didn’t know you in college. That sounds brutal even if his comments were uncalled for. But you don’t have to be flirty with him.”

Jen says, “Don’t be jealous. Just because he’ll be denied at the end of the night don’t mean you will be. I’m not seeing that ever happening. I’m too addicted now.”

With a wicked smile on his face Sam says, “Yeah, me to.”

Dean says “So we’re completely addicted to our wives. Let’s go Sam.”

They all walk back to the Diner to get their cars. Sam puts his arms around Jen and kisses her. He also gives her keys to the car. Dean kisses Candi holding her extra close for a few seconds longer than Sam did Jen mostly to one up his brother. He shakes his head when he sees the convertible the girls get into.

Dean says, “Where did you get that car Sam? Wait, I don’t want to know.”

Sam says, “No, you don’t want to know. Just drive to this address. Jen gave it to me. It's where he lives.”
