Changes to home page

March 4th 2010 09:22
The Orble home page has been given a slightly different format, with the channels moved to the top of the page rather than down the side. This allows the most popular blog list to be given more prominence and will hopefully encourage more people to make use of the different Orble channels.

An Orble inbox has also been introduced, which displays just the posts from favorite blogs. To "follow" a blog click on the "follow this blog" link displayed on that blog, or the little "F" displayed next to the blog title on Popular Blogs list.

The blogs you follow will also be displayed on your Orble profile. I was in two minds about this -- some people may not want others to know which blogs they follow -- any opinions?

Thanks,
Jon.

Hi Jon,

Nice changes - thank you! I think they will be especially good in helping newcomers and people browsing blogs to negotiate their way around Orble.

Can I take this opportunity to request something I've been meaning to mention for ages - can you kindly add:
1. Bloggercises to the Culture/Writing list
2. NewlyOld to the Lifestyle/Health list
3. TheBlogofLists to the Lifestyle/Miscellaneous list

I share your 'two minds' and I do find all the "F"s no matter how small aesthetically unattractive.

I shall be so pleased when things get back to normal and I can put my photos and art back on.

Katyzz -- you are having trouble with the images? Can you give me more information?

I like the changes, especially the ability to quickly search different channels. and don't mind people know what blogs I'm following. Is there a way to update the "add to" button on our posts to include Twitter and Facebook? I would also like to be able to include videos in my posts. Could we add a embed buttton to the blog tools?

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Copy for you, Jon, but the messages do vary a bit, this is the one I get when I try to upload a picture for photography tips, but surely you didn't really need to hear from me, there are ways you can test these things, aren't there? the not so unintelligent katyzzz, if a little ignorant of such matters, along with many of the rest of us.

Hi Katyzzz,

I'm having trouble replicating the error -- does it occur absolutely every time you try to upload an image, or just sometimes?

Thanks,
Jon.

Test Image

Test Image 2

Seems to be working -- I'll try to have a look at the logs. Meanwhile if you get this problem wait 30 seconds and then try to upload the image again.

Thanks,
Jon.

So what does the number in brackets after a person's blog mean? For example mine has (3) currently.

It comes and goes Jon, but mostly it doesn't work, nice pictures.

Re-trials do take too much time and I've tried as much as time decently allows, there has been a HUGE problem.

Just tried again with photography tips, got the same message,

I'll try again, but it is not satisfactory, meanwhile techno is awaiting your responses, he can't access his blog, at all.

I like the new layout and agree with Katyzzzzzzzz that the F's are not very attractive but like the action behind them.

Katyzzzzzzzzzzzz - having the same issue - right click on the error and hit refresh - I have done it up to 5 or 6 times but the pics eventually load.

Katyzzz -- can you try it now? Hopefully I've found the problem. Can you tell me how your internet connection is?

Techno should be back in business now -- try the last password you were sent.

Bryn -- That's the number of "followers" your blog has.

Steve -- you can embed videos already -- see this post.

I've got twitter and facebook on the todo list -- should not be too hard.

EUREKA - I knew you had it in you, JON, and as for techno I'll pass HIS message on.

He's probably out on the town, right now, being Friday night and all.

Such antics are not for me.

and thanks for helping, Jason

And saints alive, if it's not that horrophile there, he's quite amusing really but no doubt getting a bit cranky as he prepares to wing it to NZ.

Say hello to the other vampires, for me, Bryn

Now I'm getting an error message trying to put an image into a post:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /image-upload/.

Reason: DNS lookup failure for: www.theblogoflists.com

Please fix!

Looks like a DNS outage to the Pair servers -- we get them sometimes in Oz, about twice a year. They usually do not last that long. Out of curiosity are you on iinet or another ISP?

Wait 20 mins and then try again.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the update. According to the hosting guys it's a bit more of a serious DNS problem. They will hopefully get back to me soon -- before they do I'm afraid there is not much I can do from here.

I'll keep you posted.

Jon.

Loving it! Just got back from holidays and how lovely to see a fresh new Orble.

No probs about people knowing which blogs we follow, in fact it's good advertising for those writers. Also the vast majority of us wouldn’t have any OCD relating to the letter F so it’s all good. Nice work Jon.

Jon,
I have a question, why the gold star? How come some blogs, when their latest post appears on the Orble homepage, get a gold star, and yet more popular posts in the same list do not?

Hi Jon,

I just tried to start following some blogs but when I hit the 'F' it takes me to a my.orble settings page... if that is what is supposed to happen, I'm not clear on what I am then supposed to do.

I just wondering with the new Orble layout, how come you don't the most popular post in the sub categories anymore? Like the Environment section used to list the top posts..but now the right hand column is blank, it just says Environmental channels.. Is this how it's supposed to be? just wondering??

Bryn -- at the Dolphin -- send me a text

jkund17 -- Very good point -- that's been fixed.
