on REVIEW: The Duchess

October 29th 2008 15:04
I've always considered Knightley one of the most vapid and untalented young actresses on the big screen. I hope all these opinions about her showing in this film are correct. I'd hate to give up a good costume drama and Ralph Fiennes just to avoid her.

Thanks for the link.Great article for pulling it all together -- his diversity is incredible. Did you forget Don Juan De Marco? "Charming" isn't usually my cup of tea, but it won me over. Also didn't hurt to see Brando in one of his last roles.

on Shoot 'Em Up (2007): Mindless Fun

This is one of those movies that most people either love or hate. My son and I watched with our mouths hanging open for the first few minutes - WTF? Once we "got it" it was a fun roller coaster all the way. What's not to like about cheap thrills?

on The different faces of Johnny Depp

My favorite Depp films are two that you didn't mention -- Dead Man and The Libertine. I actually hated the Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow roles.

I think it's great when someone who starts out as just another pretty face matures into an actor of real depth.

on I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

You really do need to stop making sense. It's bad for the economy and damages unprepared brains.

on Neil Jordan's everlasting Mona Lisa

I watched it again recently, for the first time in many years, and I have to agree with your evaluation. It's a great film. More complex than The Crying Game, but I love both.

on The Rashomon Restoration Project

October 21st 2008 15:46
That's good news. I hope the restoration includes new subtitles. As I get older it becomes almost impossible to watch films with white lettering and no surround to separate it. The last time I tried to watch Rashomon, I had to give up. White on white just doesn't work very well.

Very interesting. I'm mildly faceblind, which I first learned about on the internet. Duchaine has been using the internet for his research because it enables him to reach far more people than would normally be possible. His research completely overturned the idea that such disabilities are always caused by injuries, and that they are fairly rare. I wouldn't be suprised if the news about this "new" disability results in more peple coming forward who have it.

on Habit Forming

It doesn't feel far away to me. I've been working on plot and characters since the middle of August, so November 1 is looking pretty darned close. I should be getting nervous by now, but with so much prep work behind me, I feel as if some parts will practically write themselves. (knock on wood)

Sigh. Just came back from the forums. I really should get some more preptime in, and start reconstructing those notes. I'll probably regret it if I don't.

I like Orble, though it's not a certain thing whether I'll ever make any money here.

And in case you're wondering about my comment, I wrote it out before signing in and then did a bad copy and paste so it wouldn't get lost. The subject was the Nano forum, and not being sucked in yet today. I think that's where I'll go next. I may succumb to grabbing some sympathy for having lost the notes on the first six chapters of my novel. I'm going back and forth between trying to reconstruct them, and just winging it.
