Understand the Behavior of Your Cat

August 3rd 2010 03:40
Cats make adorable pets and when you live in such close proximity with a creature you should try and understand its behavior. Just by closely observing your cat you will get to know its habits, body language and movements. You will also notice how your cat reacts to different stimuli and while interacting with you and other animals. Many times the individual temperament or characteristics of its particular breed will rule the cat's behavior.
Let us now see how a cat often communicates with its body language. If you find a cat lifting and shaking its paws frequently it is indicating disgust. A displeased cat will flick the tip of its tail and flatten its ears backwards. Affection is often displayed by the cat with rubbing its face or its head top against the body of the person. A leisurely blink of the eyes is also a sign that the cat is affectionate towards you. When it feels very safe and relaxed the cat will stretch and roll on its back.
When a male cat is in heat it will seek out the female who is in season and try mating with her. If there is competition he will fight with the other males so that he has the first chance to mate. A female might mate with different males one after the other and that is why she bears kittens from various fathers.
A cat communicates vocally as well. A purring sound can mean conflicting things. Sometimes a cat will purr when it is happy and satisfied. Other times it will purr when it is pain or is suffering. A heavy sigh or a grunting noise may be due to frustration. The classic meow may be a sign of seeking attention or wanting to communicate.
Cats always land on their feet thus preventing a lot of injury to themselves. Their flexible spine and the absence of a collar bone help them in this task. A full stretch will be a sign that the cat is trying to relax its muscles.

Cats are adorable pets and can entertain you the whole day with their curiosity and playful nature. They are quite independent creature and keep themselves well groomed. The danger to their health mainly lies outdoors as they can catch some contagious disease or get into a fight or accident. Properly vaccinating your cat will take care of the major diseases and if you keep your kitty safe indoors there are only a few health issues. Some of the most common ones are given here.

Fleas, Parasites and Worms

Cats are susceptible to flea infestation and getting infected with other parasites and worms. Roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms can seriously affect the health of your kitty. They can develop anemia, diarrhea which is chronic and also loss of body weight. All this can prove fatal in a kitten or a cat if it is left unchecked. The best course of action is to give a regular dose of de-worming medicine. For fleas a regular flea treatment and full cleaning of the house is advised.

Hairballs

Cats spend a third of their life grooming and this they do by licking themselves. This causes the cat to ingest a lot of its own hair. Most of the hair will pass harmlessly through the digestive tract but if there are lots, it will form a ball in the cat's stomach. This causes discomfort and the cat will eat grass to induce vomiting and get rid of the hairball. Although this is a natural process it can prove to be quite messy for the owner. To control this problem, regular brushing is advised so that it will get rid of the loose hair. There are also different medicines available which will make it easier for the cat to pass the hair through the digestive tract.

Dental Problems

A cat will usually develop gum problems like gingivitis, and there will be plaque formation on their teeth. These conditions can lead to other serious diseases and hence a regular dental examination and medication is required.

Many pet owners are put off when their adorable cat starts to spray urine in different parts of the house. Cat urine smells quite a lot and this is totally unacceptable behavior in the house. Once you understand why cats spray urine you will be in a better position to remedy the situation.

Spraying urine is a primal instinct in cats to mark their territory and also to communicate when they are in heat. Usually when there is more than one cat living in the same home or when a new cat or a baby arrives in the household you will find this type of behavior. A female cat will also inform male cats by spraying urine that it wants to mate. Another reason for spraying urine is when the cat feels its security is threatened. Here are a few remedial measures which relate to particular situations.

1) Have your cat neutered, as many times this behavior is induced by change in hormonal activity and mating patterns. After neutering your cat you might have to wait for up to sixty days for the spraying to stop totally.

2) Totally clean off the urine that your cat has sprayed with a cleaner having a neutralizing odor. Do use ammonia based cleaners as it will stimulate your cat to go on a spraying spree. You can also spray certain pheromones that are available in pet stores, to calm down your cat.

3) In households having more than one cat use separate litter boxes that are always kept clean. If you find certain cats to be in conflict segregate them and isolate their movements.

4) If a cat is persistent in spraying in a particular room, move their feeding bowl and litter box to that room as they won't spray where they eat. You can also start playing with the cat in the areas where it sprays urine.

5) A new person arriving in the house will make the cat feel threatened and it will start spraying. Under such circumstances, have the person feed and play with the cat.

6) Never try punishing your cat for spraying as it will only make the cat more fearful and insecure and will start spraying more. If the above methods do not work, consult a vet or a trainer for advice.

Toilet Training Your Cat Effectively

August 3rd 2010 03:38
It is quite tiring for a cat owner to keep cleaning the litter box on a regular basis. Here is some good news; it is possible to toilet train your kitty to use the regular water closet in your bathroom. This training will require a patient step by step approach on your part.

The first thing you need to do is to familiarize your cat in using a litter bowl rather than the usual litter box. For this you need to buy a steel bowl which fits neatly inside the bowl of your toilet. Fill this with litter and keep it very clean so that your cat is inclined to use it every time and also fill with fresh litter after every use. Tape the seat of the toilet to the back so that it does not slam down on your cat when it is using the litter bowl
