Apologies

January 30th 2009 16:50
Apologies indeed.

It has been a significant amount of time since my last post, all I can say is that time appears to have got away from me. I have a couple of new writing gigs that have taken up my time, and left very little time for reflection.

So, what's occurring?

Well, JC and Mr J have taken the plunge and committed to putting up with each other full time. That's right, they've moved in together! They have rented this bijou flat off Western Road, and it is simply divine! I'm not sure I've ever seen either of them so happy, which suits us all, as their relationship is something of the bench mark for the rest of us.

Myself? Apart from being so super busy with work, I have acquired a delicious vintage bicycle from a darling little place in Lewes, she's a gem! I have taken her out, despite the chilling Russian winds that are currently blasting our wee town, but am definitely looking forward to the warmer months when I can really get her out on the open road!

And the rest of the urban family? Well, things are pretty quiet on that front (as is often the case in January I feel), but recent events politely entitled "the non-starter" found our gorgeous country bumpkin JK experiencing significant changes since I last wrote. Her poker-straight long hair is a thing of the past, having traded it in for a funkier, choppier 'do', much more in keeping with her new shape. Having gone from Cornish fudge shop to full-time school teacher, she's dropped at least a stone and is looking fab! This new lease of life had definitely affected her confidence, and she confessed that she would really like a man to complement all the other recent changes she has experienced. And thus, JK: The Internet Dater, was born. Sure, she's dabbled before, but with little success, but her new-found zest for life gave her the boost to give it another try. Finding an interested party was child's play.....the rest, however, tells something of a different tale.......

The date was set, a Tuesday night, at a pub near to Jane's house (as well as mine and LB's - safety in location is key in these endeavours). He said he'd text when arriving at the train station, so she wouldn't be sitting like a lemon awaiting his arrival. So, instead, she waited at home for the call........And waited.......And waited. Having never been stood up before, JK was noting if not a little perplexed at the situation she found herself in. So she logged on to see if he'd sent a cancellation message. Quell surprise, there was a message from Mr Internet. In his infinite wisdom, he'd boarded his train neglecting to take with him her telephone number, and thus had arrived at the station with no means of contact. Bless him, he strode to the designated pub regardless, only to find it sans JK, waited a while, then reluctantly re-boarded and returned from whence he came.

Well, if they ever do meet and it works out, it will certainly be one to tell the grandchildren.....!

As time is ticking on, it is with a heavy heart that I bid you farewell, full of promises to not leave it as long for my next installment. Well, fortune favours the brave!

Until then,

Introductions

December 12th 2008 14:16

As my urban family are some of the most important people in my life and they will, no doubt, feature heavily in my blog, I guess it's time to introduce them.

First and foremost we have JC, the skitty blonde nursing student I have had the pleasure to call my best friend for over 15 years. She moved to Brighton two years ago, and since then she has changed so incredibly from a darling country bumpkin with the most dire fashion sense of anyone I have ever met into a sweet and sassy city girl, whilst retaining her nymphish charm. I owe this girl so much, she has been a constant in my life for so long and challenges me everyday to be a better person.

Sticking with the nursing theme for a time, EK, NS, FM and JH are newer editions to the family.

EK is an amozonian queen with delicious rich dark curls spilling over her shoulders and a demure but wicked personality. She represents the most professional amongst us, spending her days giving presentations and cavorting with tremendously important NHS types.

NS is a fierce and fabulous ICU nurse who loves to party and has us all in hysterics over her single gal antics since splitting with her less-than-desirable ex.

FM is a total glamour puss, the best dressed girl in Brighton (apart from myself, of course!). With a razor blunt platinum bob, immaculately manicured nails and a beautiful attitude, she is a total fashion inspiration! Herself and her husband are a fantastic couple, and they recently gained a welcome addition to their fabulous family unit in the shape of their new baby boy - but I shouldn't think that will change the gorgeous FM, whos biggest concern about labour was the chip in the paint of her recent pedicure!

JH is someone I have never encountered before, sweet to the core, and without a bite of sarcasm or hatred in her entire body (not even in her more than ample bosom), JH is a nurse through and through. Due to complete her nursing course this May, safer hands could not be found for any child than at the paediactric wards of the Royal Sussex. Plus, she's the only adult female I know who can genuinely get away with little girl hair clips in her sleek brown bob, and makes the meanest banana bread in the land!

Back to the old school for a time, I am lucky enough to have been able to pursuade three of my other dear friends from my formative years to make the move down to Brighton since I came here five years ago.

Where to begin?

Well, the most recent edition is JK, who took the plunge to move here from darkest Cornwall only three months ago, so is just finding her city feet. She's definately the most genuinely sweet people I have ever met, always smiling and cute as a button. JK's style is certainly all her own, with super long, poker straight hair that hasn't seen a packet of dye since she was about 14. She adorns her ample curves in super casual clothes the majority of the time, perfectly in keeping with her job as a Nursery teacher. Heavily influenced by her travels in Oz, there is something delightfully kooky and naieve about JK but don't be fooled, the gal has a cutting tounge and a filthy sense of humour!

LB is another childhood friend, who moved to Brighton a year ago. A classis geek at school, this gorgeous specimen has blossomed into a nerd with attitude! LB is one of the tallest of our dinky lot, with sassy blonde hair and a hippy chick style. She is the office worker amongst us, toiling away in a high rise in Brighton town, which takes her away from those of us with more flexible timetables, but leaves her evenings free to blindly follow the dreams of her lead singer/Tescos worker boyfriend. Ok, ok, so the rest of us got over the whole 'groupie' thing in our teens, but each to their own.....and we have been known to join her for a gig or two, don't get me wrong!

Mr J is my oldest friend. I dated him when I was 11 when we were both in the local am-dram pantomime. I played a dog, he played a robot......a fairytale Ok ok, so not a fairytale, and as I recall we only wnet out for about a week, but since then we have been the best of friends. We have been through some good and some bad, but we love each other to bits. Little Mr J is one of my most solid compadres. Mad about his mountain bike, and passionate about events management, clever Mr J just completed an MA at Brighton Uni. Mr J is like a teddy bear but less chubby, keeps his receeding hair short, owns far too many pairs of cords, many pairs of excellent underpants and a number of super cool shirts - and I couldn't live without him. Best of all, despite their paths never crossing during school, last Spring Mr J and JC realised that there would be nothing more perfect than my two best friends in the whole world getting together. Currently to be found wandering aimlessly around the streets of Hove, crazy in love, I am so lucky to have them in my life.

There are more people to mention, but for now i will leave you with one more introduction...... a person without whom, my life would be totally and utterly different. My amazing, spectacular, gorgeous, dinky daughter, Bee. Life is never as simple as it appears, more of that later though. For now, these are my people.

It's late.....

December 12th 2008 00:36
I am home tonight under a delicious silk throw (a vintage purchase from Brick Lane) in an attempt to stem the cold, so I thought that, before I retire to my bed, it was time to write my very first post.

With Christmas almost upon us, this is a super busy time, but I feel pretty organised.....my ultra chic silver christmas tree is suitably adorned with silver and turquoise baubles, and snug beneath the branches lay gifts slathered in sliver ribbons and delicate white tissue paper, accentuated by home made name tags, each letter of the names clipped from magazines and pasted onto crisp white card.

For the big day itself, I will play host to the waifs and strays, the overwhelmed and the under appreciated for my annual Orphan Annie's Open House, a wecome escape from the madness for my incredible urban family.....but more about all of them another day.

For now I must take to my bed, tune the wireless to radio 7, and prepare myself for another day.

My life, my town

Brighton - what a place! I've lived here for 5 years now, and still haven't tired of the unique atmosphere, not to mention the antics and anecdotes that I encounter every day. Keep reading to catch up on the latest dramas!
