Can't it just Shut Off?

You're sitting at the computer, maybe you have four or five windows open, maybe you're running two or three programs.
Suddenly, you have to go.
Not that the place is on fire but your lift is here, the office is closing, whatever it is that says get up NOW.
You go to close a browser and get the alert you are shutting down five sites. You know that, you shut that down. You go to shut down a program and it tells you that you have to shut down something else before you can shut down that program. You go to shut down that program and it tells you that it can not be shut down now, you have to wait.... and of course, once you get everything closed and push shut down the computer argues about it.
So at 9:01 you need to leave but have to babysit the computer until 9:05.
Or...
You shut off the computer at 9:01 and walk out.
I am trying to figure out exactly where humans became computer friendly. Where it was when we lost all volition and have to virtually beg the computer to let us get away from it.
Of course turning it off is equal in time waste as to turning it on.
You start the computer and can actually boil an egg before it is ready. Why can't it just come on and let you pick what you want to activate?
For example, all I need to type this article is for the computer to connect to the Internet and my browser come up and let me enter the site. That's it. I don't need FAX, DVD, I don't need the 987939 programs that came fully bloated on this computer. I would say I don't use about 89% of the features.
Yet, when I turn it on it has to masterbate for about 3 minutes before I can use it.
I would like a computer that is virtually instant on and instant off.
Am I asking too much here?
