Cambridge police incident

July 25th 2009 03:57
Today I am satisfied with President Obamas handling of the situation after his unfortunate comments about the Cambridge police incident involving black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. After stirring up a hornets nest, with derogatory comments about the behavior of Cambrdige police officer Sgt. James Crowley, I believe he (Pres Obama) has said enough. He has criticized both sides now when he commented publicly, that he thought Gates, too, had overreacted to the police who questioned him. (NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer)

It’s too bad there IS still racial profiling. We know it's true. It’s too bad those with a closed mind react so aggressively and poorly at the slightest provocation. Whites who bristle instantly at the black person who questions the motive of a policemans action. Those who decide “guilty!” before hearing the first fact. Blacks who instantly and without thought call any situation the “black mans nightmare” when their behavior is in question. This is behavior that immediately brands them as close minded in my book. I’m sad for them.

As for Mr. Gates behavior, in my mind had I been caught in such compromising circumstances I’d like to hope I would have considered the situation with some common sense? An instant reaction of belligerence and yelling insulting and unprofessional comments to a police officer seems to be the worst way of stating your case. How could Henry Gates Jr. think otherwise? It baffles me! I can only hope I could present a cool head and demeanor at such a critical time. I’d like to get myself out of the immediate situation with grace and question motives later. What if a stranger HAD been jimmying my door with force? I would hope a passerby would react and report the incident. I would hope the police would make sure beyond any reasonable doubt the person belonged there. Doesn’t such a rash and harsh reaction only raise more suspicion? Had I been the one to approach the individuals in question I can only answer that question with a YES.

It’s too bad there are still plenty of people in this country who have a closed mind. I’m talking about ALL races; Caucasians, Blacks, Latinos, Orientals, Indians, or any who consider themselves a “race”.

They are people who have already made up their mind that ALL others of another race are always in the wrong OR are always out to get them. Nothing will change their mind; they will NOT listen to other opinions or consider that the tide COULD BE turning. That they might be wrong. Too bad, they hurt the rest of us.

I believe the tide IS TURNING. It has been. Slowly. I don't think I'm alone in my belief.

Today I’m satisfied; I hope Mr. Obama continues to keep his cool.
