(c) Originality

January 27th 2008 16:46
So basically... this blog is pointless... anything I say from this point onwards is pointless... anything you think from this point on is pointless and so forth... so for all of you who don't know... I'm a wannabe famous filmmaker. I desire to write scripts and direct them. I plan on waking up one day with a "Hollywood" worthy script... move to L.A, find some awesome actors and become famous... all on a beginners budget of course... however I came across a slight problem... besides the fact that I can't afford to get to L.A... Besides the fact I haven't actually written anything... besides the fact I'm too lazy to write anything and besides the fact it's just a dream... but my main problem was originality. I don't even know where to begin and this blog is assuringly going nowhere and I actually apologize on my behalf! Every time I see something, or do something, or say something "movie" worthy... I jot it down in my film book. Then... I start writing random paragraphs, hoping one day they will all magically connect and turn into my first feature film. I get all excited that such simple ideas can turn into great ideas! However after re-reading some thoughts I realize that everything I write has been done before. Is there a secret to originality? I'm not exactly sure where to find it. Whenever I watch movies with friends, we can quote the whole script because that's exactly how we already talk; things we already quote previously. In fact I bet this blog has already been written... by 100's of people in search of originality. The only original script I've ever read... watched to be precise; is "my guide to life" formerly known as "the Simpson’s". They can pretty much get away with anything. If the Simpson’s haven't done it, then it hasn't been done before... by the way this is only "my" guide to life... so please... leave hate mail at the front door, I'm not trying to express truth or facts... but simply my opinion........

......So please... if anyone has original ideas... leave them here I'll be sure to take care of them

ok here's my take: There are no original ideas per se but what there is is an infinite amount of perspectives on ideas. What you need is to find that perspective or that 'voice' as it is commonly referred to in writing. Try finding a topic that sparks an emotional response from yourself- most likely this will happen to others too and investigate every corner of that topic eventualiy you will find what your lookin for. Don't start with 'moments' that you think are worthy because it will destroy any continutiy in your work. You need to find the core of an emotional concept and expand. good luck
