The Flint Of His Mind

March 5th 2011 16:18
“The flint of man´s mind can strike Fire to music”
-Ludvig von Beethoven

Meter…defined as; “…the regular recurring pattern of strong and weak beats of equal duration also known as time” (oraclethinkquest.org). Time is the operative word… as it is not only encapsulated in beat, rhythm soul and memory, but it lends itself to be a combination, known to produce symphonic harmonies that feeds and inspire the soul.
So please allow me to transport you back in the belly of time to the beats of old school, blues, jazz and soul. A time where beats of amoroso (tender and affectionate) and animato (lively) reigned supremely in the hearts and minds of the young and old.

As a child of four or so I was constantly swaying my hips and bobbing my head to the music of Diana Ross, Isaac Hays, Teddy Pendergrass (affectionately known back home as TP)Brook Benton, Carol Carpenter and of cause the great Barry White to name but a few. All of them of cause religiously played by mommie and daddy.
I remember how the lyrics of Dianna Ross´s Do You Know Where You´re Going To, always seem to keep me spellbound, by slowly suggesting the idea of destiny and dreams to my young brain.

You see as a young child I had no idea that the composer calls upon lyrics (though not always the case these days) and the natural science of acoustics, psychology, physiology, neuroscience and aesthetics which are crucial elements to be found within beats and rhythms. They are finely strung together like pearls to produce sound. As mom and dad tend to dancingly sway in each others arms to these beats, they were happy and I loved being happy too.

As time progressed to the realm of puberty and I had my heart broken for the first time, I realized that doloroso, (which is the Italian word for sorrow) is a feeling beautifully explained in music by master vocalists Toni Braxton (Un Break My Heart), Patti Labelle (On My Own), Whitney Houston (Didn’t We Almost Have It All) to really just mention a few. I somehow just gravitated to melancholy, while allowing the intense feelings of loss wash over me…The music made everything so much more intense, as if itunderstood your feelings completely , like a fiddle bough hitting the right notes!

Fortunately we all have to grow out of puberty, I am more grown up now and my hormones and heart are more in check so in check, that I listen to music with a greater consciousness. Allowing for the soul of the music to speak to me and yes entertain me…
Still on the subject of music my first encounter with Jay an artist was just that… an encounter because it stayed with me for years to come….

Leonardo Da Vinci says “Do you know that your soul is composed of harmony?”
Now allowing the word harmony to conjure up sounds and as interval is the distance between two notes, it is at this interval that I would like introduce you to a young artist of note; TuJay Harmoniques or fondly known by us back home in Eersterust South Africa as Jay.

-Jay I met you at your sister`s house many years ago, you and your friend Nelson were flowing in verse. I remember observing you and thinking; `you guys do it as if where rolling down an ever green hill, rolling and rolling jubilantly and laughing at a private joke.´ Needless to say you would flow then laugh at intervals, then flow in verse again, while the staccato, rhythmic beats of Hip Hop filled the room.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
-I am an observer of life, a seeker of knowledge and truth in all sense of life and love. I am a philosopher that’s in-love with Greek mythology at a tender age. As a result of that, it has a major influence in my music and poetry, “forget Zeus, call Jay for the smiting”. I am young at heart, an avid listener of music, when it comes to art and life because I believe have been blessed with foresight.

How would you describe your music?
-My music is informative, lyrical, thought provoking, trend setting and not trend following. I like experimenting with different concepts, love to play with words. In all honesty, I try and make progressive music, something one can relate to and refer to.

What inspires you to write?
-Urban culture, morality, politics, Different artist and different genres of music, a dope beat and a nice hook in short Life!

Mentorship of significance
The Hitmason Stable

Give us a little background on your song “Miss Caramel”.
-I first wrote miss caramel two years ago. It started off as lyrics without the instrumental until I requested production from my stable (Hitmason) and then Decency jumped at the opportunity; he had a beautifully composed sample of Teddy Pandergrass. We then collaborated with Ether Versez (Durban) and it came out beautifully. A nice way of paying homage to all women of mixed race and light shades.

A swing of TeddyPendergrass wrapped in Hip Hop

Miss caramel has a strong old school quality but the lyric lends towards the hip hop genre, was that on purpose?
-We noticed that in my region, the audience listens to a lot of old school musicians. So with this track, we wanted to cross over to that market, in providing something for the old but still appealing to the modern.

How do people respond to your music?
-I get different responses from different audiences. Fellow emcees appreciate the work put in to making the music and regular people, simply admire the man in chair for his talents.

Would you regard your music as expressed social comment?
-Yes it is. I have a lot to say about various subjects. Being opinionated does come in handy.

What makes your music unique?
-I’d say my voice because it sounds “out of this world”.

Which issues or themes are mostly highlighted by your music?
-It goes by phases, at first it was dark and somber then I went all revolutionary and now I spit grown, mature rhymes. Notice the growth? Hahaha!
Is Miss Caramel a single or part of an entire album?
-It is a part of forth coming free mix-tape “The Chairman mix-tape” which is dropping 11th may.

Artists seem to be turning to YouTube to promote their music, is that an avenue for you?
-Not yet, I want people to judge the music before seeing me. Reasons being because I’m on a wheelchair, people tend to lend sympathetic ears.

What mediums do you use to promote your music?
I use twitter, media fire, sound click and various audio enabling social networks, promotional discs and peer to peer sharing.

What difficulties are artists facing when they attempt to break into the mainstream market?
-This is one carnivorous industry, sharks hang with sharks and if you’re small fish, you’re either eaten or swim alone. Funds are needed but most importantly, no one wants to share resources and ideas, so hip hop suffers and the poetry lands on covered ears. Right now everyone is going independent and as a result everyone is forced to think that they can lead without mentorship or external assistance. In the end it’s not the artist that suffers, but rather the culture, genre and family of Hip Hop.

So Jay what´s next on your busy agenda?
Look for my mix tape “The Charman Mixtape” dropping 11 May 2011 and my album “Slamcee” dropping late or early next year…..

If you could impact young people with a final word in this discussion what would it be?
-Pressure turns coal into diamonds!

“Music is a continual state of being” –Aaron Copland
This young man´s continual state of being, is one that he is fighting for on a daily basis, however this article is not about Jay´s struggles its about his passion, his craft and how his rhythm, words and harmonies find their way into the secret places of the soul.

And so in the words of Charmaine Ziert: “ I seize the voice my favourite Fred Hammond and command it to fill my space with his finely strung notes” so that I can engage with my continual state of being…

Swan Lake!....not Duck Lake!

Spiking up the courage!

I never really understood peoples very pronounced sexual interest in feet, maybe that is because I considered my feet as a merely that…feet!
It was always the last thing I attended to on my body. They were never really important enough to pamper, washed affectionately with soothing, gentle movements that has a musicality of its own, like those models in the Lux advertisements many years ago.

I have been told I have nice legs, but never nice feet… until one day after kissing a certain gentleman of note, proceeded to ask to see my feet. I lifted my legs to bring my feet into his full view and he smiled… “That’s all good he affirmed in a sultry, husky tone”

That day… light overwhelmed me as I stepped into my “aha moment”. Now I am not going to lie to you and say that my feet became a top priority, which I vigorously attended to (old habits die hard and I’m working on it!). However it made me silently make pleasant observations about this entire foot and shoe phenomenon (well at least to me it is)…

Pleasured and pampered

According to Wikipedia, a foot fetish refers to an attraction to the shape and size of the foot, toes, nails and even the angle and height of the arch. When feet are in different state of dress e.g. bare feet, high heeled, flip flops, ballet flats or even adorned in jewelry or smell a certain way, it can conjure images of sensory interaction e.g. kissing, tickling, licking, sucking and the piece de resistance...a foot job!

The first shoe, (according to head over heels.com) was a sandal made from papyrus by an Egyptian man 40 000 years ago. Its purpose: protecting the feet from harm (a totally noble and functional reason might I add). However a quantum leap was made from then to the time when the first high heel was introduced by French aristocrat women in the 16th century.

Every foot should feel like its driving a Ferrari!

Medieval aristocrats wore decorative shoes to indicate nobility, status and prestige, which brings me to the following…

In an attempt not only to marry the issues at hand, that being feet, shoes, sensory interaction, sensuality and the meaning of shoes…But as an explanation for the thirty or more pairs of shoes in your cupboard, let me just explain.

Image via Louboutin
Thanks Mr Louboutin!

Great craftsmanship, spectacular design, colour, fabric, rich leather and if you are fortunate a Swarovski or more… These are all elements to name but a few, who are called upon to speak on your feet’s behalf.

When a woman places her foot into the embracing comfort of a beautiful high heeled shoe, she is transformed. Her feet suddenly speak in an innate, sublime language. The arch, (previously unnoticed) rises swanlike in preparation of the sensuous motion which (hopefully) is about to follow. The toes gladly grips in formation hugging the padded sole, while the heel elevates and reclines, simultaneously seating itself on the encased, high rest of the shoe’s heel. Every fold and crease of heel, arch and toe settles with the form of the shoe and the feet exhale…

I rest my case...or is that feet?

When both feet have engaged, it is now time to stand; it is now time to glide. As the calves pull like a lover erect, the upper legs, bums and hips all contract in one sensuous, synchronized motion. As you step you feel like you are walking on a new frequency. Its not only higher, longer and symphonic but its powerful!
As the stomach contract inwardly, the shoulders straightens allowing the breast to lunge forward, the chin rises to the correct angle, the nose flares inhaling breath, the mouth contacts giving way to a smile and the eyes are elated.

Now you are ready to tread and make your mark whether it is on a man’s chest, a pavement, a boardroom, a classroom, a red carpet or a mattress… a mark

Its all about the mark!
you will make!

Now sisters please just a note: Swan Lake is just that… Swan Lake not Duck Lake, if you cannot Walk it…then Work it!

The basic Bottom Note

January 12th 2011 14:59

I have never seen anything more picturesque dressed in crystallised H2O, as the European snow scene. I spent days watching the snow take shape from an almost mythical, powdery substance to crystals fit for the finest royal tiaras.
I took hundreds of pictures, which shows how the snow embraces every kind of flora and how it simply submits to its embrace.

a Rare afternoon, when the sun gave me permission
Image: Charmaine Ziert

And so with the euphoria of Christmas and every single carol known to mankind neatly packed away along with the Christmas décor… reality slowly slips in the kitchen door.

Here I sit, peering through the window on an absolute light poor European day. Watching the rain fall in soft yet definite torrents, leisurely beating the… you know what out of the melting snow.
I ponder on how less complicated our South African weather is, now let me explain before you get your patriotical knickers in a knot. Here we are in Winter and this is what we have to put up with: a way too early Winter, labeled with the following stewing ingredients: record low temperatures, snow till Thy kingdom come, ice rain turning the whole of Europe into one magnificent ice rink, where people daily contend to see who can brake the most bones, while gliding at a terminal velocity on this slippery mass! “Haaibo!” as we say back home. Now without going into a fist fighting discourse (like the Ukrainian Parliament) about global warming and natural disasters, so ever present these days. I give you the grand tour, the premium or is that platinum package of our South African weather….

A boisterous loud clatter is about to break

First on the Michelin Star menu are lots and lots of sun always ready to braze any skin to hues of soft brown, burned toast or if you are on the lighter side of life (not Castle Lite beer, you South Africans!) it burns you to a screaming serviette pink, take your pick!
Then there is the rain, oh the rain... ranging from a soft Cape Province torrent, which could easily make you think you must be somewhere in the English or Scottish countryside , to the rains of the Gauteng, Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga Provinces. Here the boisterous clatter, lilating on tin and tiled roof, calls out for children to come out and play.
They answer the call by running up and down the streets while making loud noises and peeing in the rain just for the heck of it!

The rain is so loud at times; that you cannot help but to think, that the sound is a play on the expressive, exuberant and high spiritedness of the South African people.

In the aftermath of this dancing torrent, the heat swelters and the children bare footedly, acquaint themselves with the muddy puddles of township streets. And where there is tar they just simply lie down on the streets, feeling its welcome heat as the steam rises mimicking an African blanket.

Then there is the newly a washed landscape, shimmering in tones of velvet green and silver, as if someone just came and polished every leaf with Mr. Min.
However splendid the scene, the piece de resistance will always be the smell, the smell of wet earth, it’s a combination of the following notes: wood as a top note, accompanied by African brown chalk (which we love to eat) as a basic bottom note, while floral notes float around, assaulting the nose just for fun…

This smell you will conjure up where ever you are in the world and it somehow makes up for the scene of incessant snow, (now a murky colour) rain so voluminous that it looks sad and the faint dreary suggestion of light…Haaibo!

Mzanzi for sure!

IZZIT! really?

After many years of inner and entertaining people with my take on whatever the hell is the matter with them and me. I have finally decided to say it so all can read it. Please feel free to take it with a pinch of salt or debate it vigorously (but be nice) or make it the next topic around the Sunday lunch table, while cutting up the life of auntey Rosie down the street. In no particular catagory but embracing all, let me embrace you with my Quill of Caramel. Oh...uh, yah did i say Welcome?
