WANTED. a movie review. -spoiler-

January 14th 2009 23:57
Wanted.

A real action movie-- that's what one crosses their fingers for when they start a movie these days. The commercials have had quite a tendency to include every -second- of action in those two minutes and that's where it ends. Thankfully, that is not the case for this movie.

The movie sure starts out with some interesting scenes that kind of dabble a bit in the waters of ''Fight Club'' and we're not exactly positive that the main character isn't just as crazy as Edward Norton in that flick.

The movie has an artistic way of portraying the main character [played by James McAvoy] Wesley Gibson's anxiety-- rather a heart condition that is triggered by moments of anxiety. Director Timur Bekmambetov had an innovative vision for shooting his panic attack moments, and cramming a good portion of action into those alone.

Although i was rather bemused at those opening scenes, i sat down to this movie for a reason, Angelina Jolie and guns. It doesn't take long for the Wesley to be thrown into a life that was both desperate to find him, and to elude him.

DESPERATE TO FIND him

because that's what this secret society of assassins wants: Him in it to take out their main nemesis, so to speak. They know of the potential this guy harbors because they've seen what his father is capable of. and they want him.

DESPERATE TO ELUDE him
because it is a life his father chose not to pass on to his son. this same father that abandoned him at birth did it not because he's a drunk or a druggie, but because he is an assassin in one of the most exclusive societies in the world and staying around would only mean death to the ones he loved. unfortunately much to his efforts, they found him anyways.

when i say they i mean the society of assassins, and when i say unfortunately, i'm referring to the fact that although they stumble across his son and sing praise of his father, they falsify his father's legacy in saying that his father was slain just recently by the hands of their particular ''nemesis'' , and no one can finish the job and seek redemption but his boy. So after they feed him this bed of lies, and train his dormant talent, they set him loose on his father.

THE SKULLS?

Nope, this society of assassins, shares a particular talent, curving bullets. A very interesting thing to let your mind run away on, not physically pheasable though. This ''team'' has a particular way of being able to turn their anxiety and ability to have their heart ''over-beat'' into a way of being able to make moves and plan moves at incredible speeds, beyond typical human abilities.

POOR BOY NEVER KNEW WHAT WAS COMING
not only did this poor protagonist fall under the illusion that his father was dead and he was only aiding this society in seeking revenge, he ends up being 'saved' by his father in a massive train accident, only to deliver 'de coup de grace' to him, his creator, seconds later.

all of this is revealed, while on his last blood filled, gasping breath, this man we had come to refer to as the evil one, reveals that he is indeed the boys father.

WITH NOT A SECOND SPARED TO TAKE IT ALL IN

the Wesley Gibson finds himself awakening in this special bath of wax that throughout the movie has been revealed as a healing agent. Upon coming to, a man claiming to be his father's confident reasserts all that was said at the scene of the accident, the man was indeed his father, and that all the times the two had a confrontation, he was merely trying to tear him away from the hands of that society of assassins.

AT THIS POINT

we well know what is to happen in the remainder of the movie. this poor protagonist has to take on the persona of the antagonists of the movie and have a killing spree with the entire society of assassins to gain justice for the true death of his father. While we typically like the idea of Morgan Freeman being a good guy, and how could you not? we come to terms with the fact that he is the head hauncho of this operation and he needs to be taken out. It's an easy adjustment for the audience to deal with the fact Angelina Jolie played a little deviant herself, as gorgeous and evil are like yin and yang.

ALLS NOT SO WELL THAT ENDS WELL...

while the main character finds himself in quite the predicament, practically the kiss of death if you want to get down to it, Angie, Fox in the movie, proves to be a little less of a villiain than she's made herself out to be, and curves a bullet to carve its way into every head of the circle around Wesley, including hers.

THAT LEAVES EVERY EVIL EXTERMINATED

that is, expect for Sloan, Mr. Freeman's role, the head of the operations. But c'mon did Magneto ever die?

Now, please allow me to dissect the movie, without having anything too much of spoiler..

"Who am I? I'm your friendly, neighborhood tax collector." --Will Smith

It's sure a far cry from his "welcome to miami days" but someone made the right decision to stick him into movies, because from that point on this man has been nothing but greatness. His movie 7 pounds, is already causing quite a stir in the online community as just as his last flick, I am legend, it has been made available prior to its scheduled release date. i think production needs to re-evaluate who's got their hands on Willy's screeners because their losing a good deal of money having a mole in there now...

7 Pounds-
amazing opening... leaves you in the dark, but thats what youre meant to feel, because thats what the main character [will smith] feels... ''in the dark'

the movie then proceeds to throw you into what can only be assumed is will's life leading up to this ..endall..

He's an prick, and a creep. the audience is not really made aware of what the main character's intentions are in the beginning or the movie, or the direction in which this flick is taking us for that matter, It's dark- and this is unexpected coming from writer [grant nieporte] whose also written "8 simple rules" and "Sabrina the teenage witch". well i can say its a step in the right direction on his part.. it's written in a way that makes you feel like you could bring yourself to hate will smith-- you want some explanations for what you're seeing as you can't warm up to this ''will'' you thought you knew until you get them...

Explantions.
that's what you want, and that's what you get.
just when you've painted him as the antagonist, his role starts to 180 on you. And naturally this leaves you feeling a bit frustrated, confused, and quite frankly, very pissed offf... but before you start up the homepage of rotten tomatoes and curse the producer/director/writer or PA-- take a breath, and realize you owe it-- at least to Will Smith.. to give it one last shot, and besides, who wants to become another typical american stereotype proving our general 0% capacity for patience... providing you are indeed american.

its an explanation that is starting to rear itself in the tiniest sliver of empathy
on Mr. Thomas, the main character's part, when you come to the realization that he hasn't chosen his path.. it choose him. There are different classes of people in the world, and he just happens to fall within that Corporate America class, the IRS to be precise. For this, his is almost at once forgiven. For people typically in this class, you know they read numbers, and dollar signs, not emotions and faces. So you come to terms with this quarrel you originally had with this Mr. Thomas and you cut him some slack, because from what you know of the generalization for him and his "people" you forgive him-- it's not like he knows any better...

Once you can get past this, the blindfold starts to come off as well. Wait, when did this guys have emotions.. this CAN'T be the same man who has tearing apart the soul of a blind man back at the beginning of this movie?! Yes, it is. His dark sad eyes start to have more meaning than malice. He's more benign than we thought he was and at this point we can effectively come up with a good judgement of the movie, just once we're brought back to the beginning.

Putting it into a perspective, this man has more emotion and empathy than even he can handle, you start to notice that every shot you see involving him, he's busting at the seems. and that his intentions are good. There's that 180-- you started hating him and no you just hate yourself. This IRS man-- the very one you considered being irrate, rude, and soulsucking, just morphed into an angel of sorts, an ingrained, resourceful, sage is more like it.

When you get down to it. This movie is gritty and it really does follow the suit of the director's [gabriele muccino] style. Especially when you compare it to his earlier 2006 work of The Pursuit of Happiness. At least, it makes you that same kind of miserable. This misery is rooted in the realization that we live in a rough world, and some people's situations are really rough. Playing on the whole "you don't know what you've got til it's gone emotion" it's raw and upsetting but its tried and true and always seems to hit home. I presume Hollywood needs to put these common-themed movies out with their A-list cast to give themselves their own reality check, or maybe just that fat check that is sure to come from the opening weekend being a smash at the box office. No one can turn down reality. not even in the movies anymore.
The magic of the movies-- our salvation if you will, entirely lies in the hands and hopes of those few Fantasy genre's that we can get lost in, a novacaine for the harsh reality of the world's state.. So it's up to you whether you want to soak in the reality or lose 7 lbs.

If 7 lbs didn't quite satiate your cravings for Will Smith; there has been some buzz around talks of him for a PREQUEL to his hit I am Legend. prequel for the obvious reasons, he died, and he IS that movie, their stilling going to need him in it.

If I am Legend didn't exactly hit home with you the talks also involve possibly a SEQUEL to hancock... though don't set the bar too high on that one, we all know how sequels are...

Oh yeah, and Rosario did quite a bangup job herself, but that's to be expected :]

love her, EVERYTHING she is in she rocks-

that woman just oozes sex and passion

And so, the internationally admired mastermind Stephenie Meyer's written prose was brought to the big screen back November 21 st. While it is still raking in substantial profits as it takes its place of 3rd in this weekend's box office, fans are feeling a little... disappointed, dare i say?

The author was very meticulous about her leading vamp, Edward Cullen, but a few things themselves could have been 'tweaked' on Catherine's part as far as bringing that to light. Some of the supernaturals were a bit chinzy and tacky... the flying for instance, was a bit too much and took the quality out of the shots that were, on her defense, very well done. But i wouldn't expect it to be too difficult to have the beautiful states of Washington and Oregon serve as a background to any movie...

there was a bit too much implied--
it relied to heavily on the fact that the director assumed EVERYONE has already read the story, which for the most part, is absolutely true :] still, quite a good deal one would have to explain for those who haven't started the text-induced saga to fully understand the movie.. also, the whole relationship just jumped an incredible gap.. but I do suppose that is understandable as far as keeping it in a normal time frame.

Robert Pattinson did a pretty good job at staying in character throughout the whole movie-- being tortured and tormented by his own mixed emotions.. and i must say Jasper did quite a standup job himself-- err, that is all he really had to do!

still, he too played on his TORTURED traits very well. p.s his mate alice will be great down the road.. but they def uglified her by chopping her hair off(well it's a wig --she's a betty with long hair)

Moving right along...
yes, moving right along, that is exactly what SUMMIT ent. was thinking when they set the date for the too-much-already-anticipated sequel "New Moon" as they have already set the date for November 20, 2009 placing a cross on the director Catherine Hardwick's shoulders...

Too much a burden for her to bear, as she does not wish to rush her artistic limits with such a short timeframe that she has decided to DROP, yes ditch.. the money.. i mean quartet..

Chris Weitz has been reviewed and accepted by Summit to take on the role and i have some faith in him.. i say some because it is a very different world.. a man's take vs. a woman's... but Hardwick did have a bit of a manly side to her... Look at "Into the Wild" for example, bet no one would have trusted a woman to take on an endeavor such as that one, and i must say she did a bang up job with it ;]

Throwing Weitz back into the spotlight...
he has worked on such films as the "American Pie" series and "Golden Compass" so hopefully one will review his... creativity... and entrust him to adapt the remnants of the Twilight series, with as much care as Catherine, if not more...
