Rain Gods vs Football Gods

May 12th 2009 15:06
Rain Gods - 1, Football Gods - 0

I asked the football gods to give me great weather last weekend. The sun did shine, but on the wrong freakin time and day. Football was over. Other than the rain, the washing machine in the house broke down. I had to stay in the house and repair it -- I did it while the sun crept back in the day.

I am hoping this weekend won't be the same. In the meantime, I am going to play some badminton Wednesday evening. That should be enough fun in the midweek. It's also enough to burn a lot of the weekend calories from having nice meals with the family.

I expect the football gods to even score with the rain gods. Grrr.

Water-Proofing Trouble

May 6th 2009 16:52
Latest from the weather bureau: a storm will hit the area this Friday.

Most likely result: a wet and muddy field to play football on Saturday. Since the game is all-weather, rain or shine we play, I am going to play. Last time, we even played during a thunderstorm. The only justification back then was the tall guy on the team who'd most likely get hit by lightning before me. harhar.

Most likely problem: a slippery field negates my ability to run and make quick direction changes. I have a pair of running shoes that can handle mud but I don't think it'll do the job. Last time we played I saw a team mate whose shoe soles got ripped and flew off while running with the ball.

Solution: Buy and then use freakin cleats!

Issue: Another pair of shoes isn't really on my budget. D-oh!

One thing about growing up in a basketball-crazed nation, there's almost no place for guys who can't take that sport seriously. I mean, I do watch the NBA and the local PBA, but me play? Uh-uh.

I can remember my dad almost forcing me to join the summer basketball leagues. I did once and boy, did I hate that. I know I have a fairly decent three-point shot, but that doesn't mean I'm fit to join any league.

So, 15 years later...what do I have for recreational sports?

I've discovered a genuine love for one court sport (no slam dunking needed). This is badminton. I love both the competitive and friendly nature of the people I've played with. I mean, if you decide to take it up, you should really try to improve or lose "playmates."

Currently, for other sports, I'm getting the feel of touch football. I've managed to join a small group of players that play every weekend. The game is like American-style football minus the safety gear and hard tackles. As the name implies, we simply touch or "tag" opposing players with two hands to signify a tackle. We score with touchdowns and work hard for 10-yard gains. I'm loving the game so far; having a good sense of team play.

Who cares about b-ball now?

Weekends and Weekdays

May 4th 2009 17:23
Work hard, party even harder. But as we get older, our bodies start to disagree with us. I'm 30 plus- years old and I disagree with my body. I say I can still take some physical activity.

I really don't dream of having "Spartan-esque" abdominals, but I am sure going to try (in my dreams)
