Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition to the baby, but there are a few problems which a new mum will face. Here are the problems and their solutions so that breastfeeding is not stopped.
Sore Nipples
This is mainly caused when the baby latches on to your nipple incorrectly. Such latching will create a tight seal around the areola and nipple making is sore. Majority of the times such latching happens due to certain positions of the mother or the way the child is held. You can change the way you hold your baby or change your position and see if it is more comfortable. You can also guide your nipple across the baby's mouth and see if it latches on correctly.
Engorgement
Engorgement is a condition when breast swell up due to excess production of milk in the mother's body. This is natural few days in the beginning and then the body will usually adjust the production with the demand from your baby. Engorgement can make the breasts rigid, swollen and painful. A breast pump can be used for removal of milk and you can increase the feedings. For relief, massaging the breasts and application of cold compress is advised.
Plugged Milk Ducts
A duct gets plugged when milk is left to stand in certain ducts in the breast which further leads to lump formation. This may be due to a change in the feeding routine, the breast not emptying, due to engorgement and wearing ill-fitting bras. You can remedy this problem by feeding more often or using a pump to make the breast empty.
Mastitis
This is an infected condition of the breasts. An area on the breast will become tender and swollen and get a reddish color. The woman will suffer from fever and chills and also other symptoms common with flu. This requires prescribed antibiotic treatment from a physician. The woman can still continue to nurse as no harm will come to the baby and it will also give relief to the condition.
