Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition to the baby, but there are a few problems which a new mum will face. Here are the problems and their solutions so that breastfeeding is not stopped.

Sore Nipples

This is mainly caused when the baby latches on to your nipple incorrectly. Such latching will create a tight seal around the areola and nipple making is sore. Majority of the times such latching happens due to certain positions of the mother or the way the child is held. You can change the way you hold your baby or change your position and see if it is more comfortable. You can also guide your nipple across the baby's mouth and see if it latches on correctly.

Engorgement

Engorgement is a condition when breast swell up due to excess production of milk in the mother's body. This is natural few days in the beginning and then the body will usually adjust the production with the demand from your baby. Engorgement can make the breasts rigid, swollen and painful. A breast pump can be used for removal of milk and you can increase the feedings. For relief, massaging the breasts and application of cold compress is advised.

Plugged Milk Ducts

A duct gets plugged when milk is left to stand in certain ducts in the breast which further leads to lump formation. This may be due to a change in the feeding routine, the breast not emptying, due to engorgement and wearing ill-fitting bras. You can remedy this problem by feeding more often or using a pump to make the breast empty.

Mastitis

This is an infected condition of the breasts. An area on the breast will become tender and swollen and get a reddish color. The woman will suffer from fever and chills and also other symptoms common with flu. This requires prescribed antibiotic treatment from a physician. The woman can still continue to nurse as no harm will come to the baby and it will also give relief to the condition.

Breastfeeding is extremely important to provide your baby with the proper nutrition. This is the only source from which the baby will get its nutrition in the initial few months, so it is vital that this diet is complete for the child. If this nutrition lacks any fats or vitamins there will be problems with the baby's development and growth and so it is important that a nursing mother has a very nutritious diet and follows the doctor's advice in this matter.

Among the different requirements in the diet, DHA Omega 3 fats are the most vital component. These fatty components are necessary for the well being of the mother as well as the baby. These fats have a strong impact on the proper development and growth of the baby. The baby will have good eyesight, a sharper brain with high IQ, development of good coordination between hand and eye, strong immune system and lesser disorders concerned with sleep.

Many new mums suffer from postnatal depression and will lose their appetite and interest in the usual things. They become weepy and nothing seems to bring any joy for them. DHA Omega3 fats have been known to prevent this kind of depression and also reduce the risk of breast cancer. These fats are not naturally produced by the body and hence have to be in food items that form a part of a mother's diet.

Fishes like salmon, hoki and tuna are the best source for these fats and it is good to include them in the diet. Although these fishes have a good source of these fats it is not advisable to have too much of cooked fish in present times as many of the waters of these fishes are heavily polluted. In such a situation the best option is to take supplements that contain this fish oil. These supplements are refined and of pharmaceutical grade, so they are completely safe.

It is always recommended that the process of weaning your child from breast feeding should be a slow and gradual one. Although you can breastfeed your child for up to two years, some women find breast engorgement too uncomfortable and would like to wean their child much earlier. Here are few tips which will help you in the process.

Many experts feel it is best to let the child decide when it would like to stop being breastfed. The change cannot happen in a day and you should never force your decision to wean on the child. Once the child decides that it is time then the mother can also slowly stop.

One of the ways you can try weaning is by changing the feeding routine. When your child has got used to the routine of being breastfed before bedtime, you can try substituting with bottle or cup and at the same time snuggle close to the child. You can also read to your child or talk to him or her in a soothing voice. If your child wakes up during the night, hold him close and most likely he will drift back to sleep.

During the weaning period be extra careful of your child's stress levels. Your child is quite sensitive during this time and a new nanny or care provider can induce stress. If you are not able to remedy the situation then it would not be wise to wean your child at these times. It can become very stressful for your child to handle.

Another tip is to avoid places in the house where you used to breastfeed your child. Take him to a new environment when it is feeding time and you should also change the position in which you used to hold him while breastfeeding. The similarities will unnecessarily trigger breastfeeding mental patterns in the child.

The golden rule is of course patience and never be high handed when it comes to weaning.

Does your baby create a fuss? It may be that your baby is not fussy at all, but you have been given some wrong advice about breastfeeding. This is often the case as there are a lot of misconceptions doing the rounds on breastfeeding. One such advice which is freely given is that at each feeding time you should nurse your baby equally from each breast. This advice is totally wrong and your baby can develop a severe case of colic. Let us see why this is so.

There is a change taking place in the quality of the milk in a breast during the feeding time. The fat content starts to increase in one breast, when more the baby feeds off that breast. Now due to some misconception this additional fat is not considered good for the baby. So the advice is given to switch breasts while feeding so that the baby does not get the fat
