Halloween should be scary, not cute, and I appreciate every book that wakes us from our PC mindset and sets us straight. (I also think Halloween should be celebrated year round, but I'll save that rant for another day.)
One of my favorite, get-me-in-the-mood Halloween books is A Zombie Ate My Cupcake: 25 Deliciously Weird Cupcake Recipes by Lily Vanilli (Cima Books, 2011). I found a bunch of creepy, yucky, wonderful cupcake recipes and instructions for making the perfect Halloween cupcakes. This book has also been an inspiration, giving me ideas for cupcakes for other events or just to keep my kids on their toes. Sweeney Todd's Surprise is my personal favorite.
A smile is a creepy thing to see on a corpse, but it does happen quite often. In superstitious belief, a grinning corpse means that the deceased is happy that he or she will soon have company - another family member is soon to die and join the happy corpse.
I loved watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer with my kids, and I always got a kick out of the concept of demons and vampires hiding during Halloween night because of all the human mortal lunacy. However, as folklore has it, all the souls down in hell are released for 48 hours beginning on Halloween day. That's two days of mischief and mayhem - not just one night.
I always thought that cold hands meant a warm heart, but there are other beliefs surrounding cold hands. And since this is a Halloween blog, we'll stick with all things gruesome.
While you are getting married, if anyone complains of cold hands there will soon be a death among someone at your wedding. Also, if someone suffers from cold hands before taking a vacation, it is a sign that they won't be returning alive

While not directly tied to Halloween, this old superstition is a classic. Since childhood, I remember being told to never open an umbrella indoors or bring an open umbrella indoors because it is bad luck. The older superstition states that an open umbrella in the house brings death to the home and tears will rain down. To bring an open umbrella into the house, brings the bad weather into the home.
There are so many death omens relating to Halloween that it is going to be fun trying to write about each and every one.
One death omen states that if you cut yourself on Halloween, you will die shortly thereafter. The theory is that the souls of the dead, who are allowed to walk the earth at this time, catch the scent of your blood and begin to hunt you down. I believe that the opposite would be true: that the cut is merely a small blood offering to appease the spirits of the deceased. People who haven't bled on Halloween should have more to fear from the spirits than those who have made an accidental sacrifice.

What would life be like without that once a year outlet to get all spooky and dress up in some awful costume? I couldn't live without the fake cobwebs on the porch, plastic spider rings, glow-in-the-dark skeletons, rubber bats, and vampire teeth.
There's also all the ghost stories and crazy superstitions surrounding Halloween. From dead men seeking a golden arm to spirits reaching up out of the ground, tripping trick-or-treaters. Whenever I think I've heard all there is to know about Halloween, someone contacts me with something completely new and different.
Halloween is a time to let our imaginations get the better of us. We get to be scared, honor the dead, party, and carry on family traditions
