.Blood thirsty printers!!

Hello everyone
Computers -.it is their add ons that drive me crazy! All these incredible inventions, that are supposed to make our life easier - I don't know. Maybe it is because I am into my thirties and want to keep things simple and easy to learn.
Printers for instance - our cupboards are full of printers that have broken down, become obsolete or just run out of ink because we cannot get their refills!
What do I want in a printer? One that works and is reliable! A three-in-one that doesn't eat your fingers as the lid closes! Our last one seemed to have a need to try to bite anyones fingers with the lid as we were going to scan the pages! It was a blood thirsty monster! So after months of putting up with this bad behavior we put it out to retirement - in the cupboard!
Other printers produced great color, were slow to print, ate the paper, blew up because of power dips, got sick due to eating too much dust! A printer that is family friendly - that would be great! One able to handle the multiple functions of a family who are all actively involved with technology! Printing out the photographs, pictures for coloring, scanning the images for web work and magazine layouts! Be able to be easily cleaned and nice to the main operator - me! not try to eat people as they use the various features.
Do what the brochure in the box says it does would be excellent! Directions written in plain English - not technology terms.
If I find a printer that can deliver all of these and more, then I will be pleasantly surprised!
Do you know of a good one? A well behaved printer 3-in-one or a quality printer in general?
